SAIL FAIL?? A Day of Surprises - REEF, BROKEN BITS & BILGE ALARM | Sailing with the James's (Ep.122)
We never imagined our day would take this turn when we woke up. After navigating out of the lagoon, dodging coral bommies at low tide, things quickly took a turn. A part broke on the daggerboard—ripping currents, tides, and winds causing the chain and boat to act unpredictably, and to top off the day, the bilge alarms went off, and water began flooding the boat. Fortunately, the broken piece on the daggerboard was fixable. With the tide ripping, we decided to pull anchor, and the 2x 500gallon bilge pumps were able to keep up with the ingress of water while Sam tackled and fixed the issue. Despite the chaos, we made great timing, had a fantastic sail, and, thankfully, all the excitement was fixable! ________________ Ahoy! We’re the James Family, a trio sailing around the globe and sharing our family-friendly adventures every week! Sam hails from New Zealand, while Cait is from the United States; we met in Cairns, Australia. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we eloped, and a year later, our family grew with the arrival of Charlie! In 2022, we took the leap to follow our dream, sold everything, and bought an old, unfinished aluminum catamaran. Now, we’re fixing her up as we explore the world. In this series of videos we explore the Wiszniewski Yachts W-43 in detail. This version was powered by the triple 300hp V8's and the standard version is optioned with the dual 400Hp V10. This is an interesting concept that left me with the impression that she is somewhere between an adventure boat hull and a luxury med style day boat. She will entertain 10+ people, lunch for 4-6 people no worries and overnight in comfort for 2. I imagine if you have been introduced to the world of adventure boats but felt limited by the amount of space you have available onboard and like the idea of spending more time aboard your boat but still having access to very respectable cruising speeds and a real step up in onboard comforts then this could be a great boat for you. THE GOLD STANDARD IN WEEKENDERS The Antares 9 is a sleek modern boat reimagined with innovations and enhancements taken from larger models. Built for fun-filled weekends on the water, this new version offers even more ways to enjoy the sea. It is easier to move around and handle, and even better in good company whether you’re anchored or cruising. EXTERIOR DESIGN The new Antares 9 has an elegant profile and boasts sleek, powerful lines, enhanced by a silver rubbing strake and long hull windows. The wheelhouse arch, a real hallmark of the line, forms a slightly broken curve. It joins the extensive coachroof which protects the generously sized aft cockpit (1.7 m by 2.4 m). By adding an extra seat, the L-shaped bench seat can be converted into a U-shaped saloon area, the ideal layout for a large number of guests. This modular saloon can be easily converted into a sunbathing area when you want to relax and sunbathe. INTERIOR DESIGN The new Antares 9 is perfectly suited to cruising with family or friends, offering its passengers a remarkable quality of life on board. Surrounded by large windows, the interior lounge is bathed in light. The modern galley is fitted with an 80-litre fridge, two electric rings or hobs, an optional microwave oven and plenty of storage space. The forward owner’s cabin promises cosy nights at sea. With its queen-size bed, lacquered furniture, mood lighting, padded bed head, and spacious hanging locker, it delivers an exceptional level of comfort and elegance rarely found on boats this size. The equally comfortable guest cabin can accommodate two passengers, while the saloon can be converted to provide two additional berths. THE PLEASURE OF RELAXED SAILING The new Antares 9 is a delicate balance between performance and safety, and exterior space and interior volume. Every detail has been designed to make movement easier and provide seamless access to the sea, making trips to sea even more relaxing and enjoyable. The new Antares 9 is all about family cruising and water sports with friends, embodying versatility, comfort, and elegance. READ MORE https://www.bateswharf.co.uk/news/new-model-beneteau-antares-9/

There were huge crowds, maybe the biggest yet, as four skippers finished the Vendée Globe on Sunday. Kojiro Shiraishi finished 24th, Violette Dorange 25th, Louis Duc 26th and Sébastien Marsset 27th and they all received a rapturous welcome. With today's finishers, a record has been set for the most finishers ever in the Vendée Globe. We watch the scenes, with extended commentary from Andi Roberton for Kojiro's finish, then look at the Tracker for those still at sea, and the Ranking for all the finishers so far. #vg2024 #imoca #vendeeglobe #sailing

The KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix on Sydney Harbour provided us with thrilling racing, but arguably the most contentious moment of the weekend was when the Australian SailGP Team, helmed by Tom Slingsby, were awarded a penalty in the pre-start when they were luffed by the Canadian NorthStar SailGP Team, helmed by Giles Scott. We take a look as to whether the decision was correct, using the UmpApp view and help from SailGP Chief Umpire Craig Mitchell. This Parker Sorrento 100 is a boat that surprises you with clever ideas that utilize the available space in both functional but also stylish ways. If you are a buyer of a family style sports cruiser and you want to combine elegant external lines with good accomodation for parents and the kids then this is aboat that will do it for you. The outboard power also gives you a very high cruising speed and shallow water access that you just cannot get with inboards and for those of us in warm countries it's so much better for 12-month's of in water storage. This is a production builder from Poland so the quality appears the same at your Beneteau and Jeanneau competition which is totally acceptable for someone wanting a boat to go boating, enjoy a few summers and then trade up into something different. I say this because boats that appeal to a family market with two cabins seem to always do well on the used market so your ability to move onto the next boat is not hindered.. This is only the second Parker I have tested in my life so I cannot claim to be an expert on this brand but from what I saw they appear to be good, fun, stylish boats that compete with the bigger name brands. This is a worthy competitor to have on your list. I hope this helps. The reaching starts in SailGP make for entertaining viewing and, with just 400 metres until the first mark bear away, they are often critical to a race result. Get away cleanly, and you’re free to make the best tactical decisions on the first downwind leg. Round the leeward gate first and you can then control the fleet on the upwind leg. Let’s take a look at the starts on the first day of the KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix, held just off Shark Island in Sydney Harbour. Four races were held in a good breeze allowing us to see what tactics work best. The first race sees France use opportunity to find pole position at the leeward end of the start line. As the countdown hit zero, the French are actually two boat lengths back from the line, but they have pace as the majority of the fleet are slightly early, and the Spanish create a gap for them as they and the Australians above them head up. The French then come in with pace, securing the inside line for the bear away at the first mark. Race 2 sees some of those at the windward end misjudge their time on distance, giving the Australians a clear run at the line, and within seconds they are two boats length clear of the fleet. The boats at the leeward end are much slower off the line this time, so they were easily rolled by Australian F50 and the Brits just behind them. The third race is much tighter, but once again the Australian team, helmed by Tom Slingsby, judge their time on distance perfectly, this time at the leeward end. More boats are at pace on the line in this race, making for a tighter fleet at the bear away, but Slingsby’s inside line proves decisive and the Flying Roo’s going on to take the win. The final race of the day is the tightest of the lot, but once again it is Tom Slingsby’s Australian team who combine pace with time on distance to break clear of the fleet. Note how the pack to leeward of the Australians are pointing slightly high, leading to them being slower off the line, while the pack to windward are around a half boat length back, giving Slingsby and his team the space to power away, leading at the first mark again and going on to take the win. This episode, we're taking 3 days to sail from Inskip point to Ballina which officially marks the end of our first season of sailing Queensland! We're in disbelief that we actually made it back, having NEVER sailed before...and furthermore to be looking at our future with a new lens! Sailing has captivated our hearts and we quite simply can't see ourselves doing anything else for the foreseeable future 😝 So many triumphs, so many lessons - so much to be grateful for! Join us this week as we reflect on our journey thus far and sail the 200NM back to where it all began! We’re a little behind on our videos - we’re just having too much fun! So to connect with us in real time, you can find us on our new FaceBook page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61551024568844 For ad-free and early release episodes, behind the scenes content and live updates, check out our Patreon! Your support allows us to continue to create videos and maintain our home, Innerbloom - keeping the adventure alive. Thank you! https://www.patreon.com/TheNewKidsOnTheDock https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=KNLJDGDXPAYAU ABOUT OUR BOAT:- Innerbloom. Previously named Nui. We took off a letter and added a few. Innerbloom is a homage to a song beloved by us from an Australian electronic band, Rufus Du Sol. - 1985 Joe Adams design. 35ft. Steel. Fin keel. Sloop rig. Around 12 tonnes. - Aft cabin, centre cockpit and a v-berth brimming with tools, equipment and vitamins for Sonya. ABOUT US: We are Josh (1996), Phoebe (1998) and Sonya (2022) who is our baby bearded dragon. We met in 2019 and 3 weeks later discovered our dream of sailing together having never stepped foot on a sailboat ourselves. Within this month of meeting we knew were undoubtedly madly in love, and that we wanted to continue this love story on the ocean. Our shared passion for nomadism, nature, minimalistic living and adventure fueled the fire of this insane dream of one day being able to sell all that we own to sail full time. In February 2020 we moved aboard our new floating home having purchased her only 6 months before sight unseen and proceeded to live in a trawler harbour for 2 years. Her previous owner lived on the hard stand for 10 years, so Innerbloom was set up for full time living - not cruising. We spent the next 2 years upgrading vital systems and electrics, treating rust and trying to learn as much as we could about sailing and sailboats whilst working full time. Josh worked at a sugar mill as an Electrician and instrumentation technician and Phoebe worked an online business and as a Librarian’s Assistant. In March of 2023 we set sail from our home port of Ballina, NSW, to embark on our first season of cruising up the East Coast of Queensland having only sailed Innerbloom a handful of times. It sounded insane…and it was! We were taking a chance on a dream having little to no control over its outcome. But we’re now at the tail end of our first season of sailing with no plans of stopping any time soon! We strive for transparency on our channel which means that we quite literally share all of the ebbs and floods of our novice sailing journey. It is our immense pleasure to share our story and adventures with you on the tube! So if you’re new here - hop aboard and be sure to hit subscribe to be notified of weekly videos.
