In Episode 54 of the Sailing Goat Series, we take on the notorious Otranto Channel, sailing west to east on a 13-hour, 110NM passage in freezing 1°C Siberian winds. The Otranto Channel is known for its unpredictable weather and heavy commercial traffic, making it a true test of seamanship. Our Furuno radar and navigation system proved invaluable, helping us stay alert and safe through the night. Me and the blonde stayed up together until midnight, then my solo night shift began. With small squalls and a suspicious fishing vessel lurking outside Corfu, it was an eventful night. At 8 AM, the blonde took over, giving me a much-needed 2-hour nap just as we entered the channel between Corfu and Albania. Though we originally planned to stop in northern Corfu, we made the last-minute decision to push all the way to Preveza to rendezvous with Andy and deliver his spare parts. Arriving in Preveza at night proved to be another challenge. Many of the channel buoys were unlit, and the city lights blended with traffic lights, making navigation confusing. Thanks to our radar and equipment, we managed to moor safely at 9 PM. The next day, I installed our new diesel heater, only to realize I’d have to take it apart again to correct some wiring mistakes. Boat life never fails to keep things interesting! ⛵ 13-Hour Otranto Passage: Sailing through the unpredictable Otranto Channel, dealing with squalls, freezing winds, and dodging commercial traffic—this passage had it all! 🎯 Solo Night Watch: While the blonde got some rest, I sailed alone through the night, navigating tricky conditions and keeping an eye on a suspicious fishing vessel outside Corfu. 📡 Radar & Navigation Win: Our Furuno radar and nav system proved essential for staying safe in high-traffic waters and tricky nighttime approaches. 🛠️ Diesel Heater Installation Fail: We installed our new diesel heater, only to discover a wiring issue that required a full teardown and reassembly. Another day, another boat project! 💬 Join the Conversation: Have you done a long night passage or navigated tricky channels in the dark? Share your experiences, tips, or thoughts in the comments below! 👍 If you love real sailing challenges and onboard upgrades, give this video a thumbs up, share it with fellow sailors, and subscribe to the Sailing Goat Series for more adventures. 🔗 Connect with Sailing Goat: Instagram: @nobodysride Instagram: @sailing_svgoat 📌 Hashtags: #SailingGoat #NightPassage #OtrantoChannel #NavigationChallenges #FurunoRadar #Preveza #DieselHeater #LifeAtSea ⛵ Join us for another week of real sailing adventures—110NM of unpredictable waters, freezing nights, and tricky night navigation. Fair winds and following seas await!

If your wife see's this Chris Craft Calypso 32 up close then forget about your plans on getting a hardcore fishing center console because she's going to love this! The Chris Craft Calypso 32 is where classic brand pedigree meets practical design features. This is a boat that will extend your days on the water and she'll also extend your season while still having that cool Chris Craft vibe and a LOT of creature comforts for a mixture of activities on the water. In part 1 of this 2 part series we tour the features in detail and take a deep dive into the layout. Then in part 2 we go for a spin in the ocean and again in the flat water where we can run her up to full speed and get a feel for the hull design and what she's best suited too. This is a brand that has stood the test of time for a reason. I'm happy to see them evolving with the demands of the owners and future owners. Welcome to the Fairline wood shop, where precision, craftsmanship, and dedication come together to create stunning, high-quality woodwork. In this video, we take you behind the scenes to explore the intricate process of shaping, sanding, and lacquering walnut veneer to perfection. Every detail matters when it comes to achieving the luxury finish we pride ourselves on. The Craftsmanship Behind the Scenes The woodworking process is both an art and a science. Every curve, every lacquered layer, and every sanding session contribute to the final result: a piece that exudes sophistication and durability. The Switch One Design is the fastest one design dinghy and is going about events in a very different way to other classes. Foiling camps, clinics, tours and demo days sit alongside traditional regattas and championships, while the three different rigs available make the boat accessible to a wide weight range of sailors. As Simon explains, foiling isn't out of reach for your average dinghy sailor, so maybe now is the time to give it a go and make the Switch? #sailing #foiling #foilinggeneration #dinghy

The first ever Fast Women’s Switch Training Camp took place at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Thailand, attracting some of the best sailors in the world, fresh from competing in the Australia Sail Grand Prix. The hugely talented group taking part were Denmark’s three-time Olympic medallist Anne-Marie Rindom, the USA’s Paris 2024 Olympian and Women’s America’s Cup sailor Erica Reineke, Switzerland’s Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympian Maud Jayet, Australia’s 2016 29er Youth World Champion and 2017 Australian Sailor of the Year Tash Bryant, who was also part of the British Athena Women’s America’s Cup team, and finally Liv Mackay of the New Zealand Women’s America’s Cup team. The aim of the event was getting to know the Switch in beautiful surroundings and warm waters, combined with a chilled atmosphere. Max Godfroy and Pom Green from Element 6 provided on and off the water support and advice about the boat and different foiling techniques. For all the sailors the Switch One Design foiler was a new experience, but they picked up the foiling techniques quickly in conditions varying between 5 and 11 knots. Their enthusiasm was incredible, with Anne-Marie, Maud and Liv already having boats on order and Erica declaring she’s definitely getting one as well. With so much experience on hand, a plethora of great ideas were suggested for more women’s training camps and events. The next camp is scheduled for May at legendary Lake Garda for those who have already purchased a Switch, and the seeds were sown for events in Denmark and Australia. The Royal Varuna Yacht Club proved to be the perfect venue for this first camp, being so close to the Element 6 headquarters and en-route for European-based SailGP sailors on their way back from Australia. #sailing #foiling #foilinggeneration

Palma, Mallorca was an ideal staging spot to resupply and address warranty issues. This is the second stop where I was warmly greeted by Hallberg Rassy representives. Unfortunately, I was surprised by an overflowing holding tank, but the services available on the island really came though and a pump out was the cure. The large Tohatsu 9.9 was really too big for my RIB so I sold it and purchased a Honda 6. Much better fit on the stern and easier to handle without a crane. I'm a minimalist when it comes to adding poles and large cages on the stern and love the clean lines of the 44 as she was intended. A suction cup jig on the stern port for the starlink was perfect. Nicole arrives July 4th and after a couple days in Palma we embark for the first time on our own to Santa Ponça, Cala Blanca, St Elm and Andratx. Anchoring in a crowd has always been a bit of a phobia of mine, especially in a brand new Hallberg Rassy. It actually wasn't that bad and I found sailors at the anchorages to be helpful, welcoming and cautious. Powerboaters, not so much. I found that the number of boats in a confined space demands a much shorter scope 3:1 vs the typical 5:1 which is fine with light winds as the boat usually hovers above the chain. However, a firm reverse is essential as some of the sandy patches can be a thin, light dusting over a rock bottom. Inspection of the anchor with snorkel gear is helpful to ensure your anchor is dug in and to avoid hooking the Posedonia, a protected Mediterranean Sea plant. This practice also helps build confidence and knowledge when anchoring. Santa Ponça was a pleasant town with all amenities. The crowd was young and vibrant. The food was mostly "meh" but we found excellent Chinese food at "Good Taste." There is also a place that all refer to as the "Chinese store" which has everything. Not an exaggeration. At our very first anchorage, we also learned the importance of locking your dinghy as ours was gone when we returned to the dock. A few minutes of panic later we found it a few hundred yards away on a small beach being tended to a gentleman who swam out and retrieved it. I could not thank this man enough. He would not take cash reward but if he is reading this, thank you again. Nicole and I then headed to Cala Blanca for a night where we had a beachfront gourmet meal at Maria 5. We then headed to Andratx but there were no moorings so we sailed to Sant Elm, a pleasant town with a lovely hillside street lined with shops and cafés with a lovely view of the anchorage. Andratx, is the most lively town we visited. You need to reserve a mooring there which is done online. Although the swimming is not as inviting, the town is bustling and there always seemed to be late night festivities and bar activity. After a few days in Andratx we returned to Santa Ponça until returning to Palma to meet the kiddos who were all flying in for a visit.

It's an unfortunate affair hauling out a steel boat in the middle of the wettest season of Northern NSW! But with only a few days to treat rust, antifoul and update old systems on the boat, we're going to have to take what we can get! After our first season as novice sailors, we find ourselves coming full circle and hauling out in our home port of Ballina, NSW. Old yatchies with a lifetime of experience band together to help us solve problems beyond our knowledge. Rain, hail or shine we're making the most of it and bring our high energy and excitement to this haul out as we prepare for our second year of cruising! We’re a little behind on our videos - we’re just having too much fun! So to connect with us in real time, you can find us on our new FaceBook page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61551024568844 For ad-free and early release episodes, behind the scenes content and live updates, check out our Patreon! Your support allows us to continue to create videos and maintain our home, Innerbloom - keeping the adventure alive. Thank you! https://www.patreon.com/TheNewKidsOnTheDock https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=KNLJDGDXPAYAU ABOUT OUR BOAT: - Innerbloom. Previously named Nui. We took off a letter and added a few. Innerbloom is a homage to a song beloved by us from an Australian electronic band, Rufus Du Sol. - 1985 Joe Adams design. 35ft. Steel. Fin keel. Sloop rig. Around 12 tonnes. - Aft cabin, centre cockpit and a v-berth brimming with tools, equipment and vitamins for Sonya. ABOUT US: We are Josh (1996), Phoebe (1998) and Sonya (2022) who is our baby bearded dragon. We met in 2019 and 3 weeks later discovered our dream of sailing together having never stepped foot on a sailboat ourselves. Within this month of meeting we knew were undoubtedly madly in love, and that we wanted to continue this love story on the ocean. Our shared passion for nomadism, nature, minimalistic living and adventure fueled the fire of this insane dream of one day being able to sell all that we own to sail full time. In February 2020 we moved aboard our new floating home having purchased her only 6 months before sight unseen and proceeded to live in a trawler harbour for 2 years. Her previous owner lived on the hard stand for 10 years, so Innerbloom was set up for full time living - not cruising. We spent the next 2 years upgrading vital systems and electrics, treating rust and trying to learn as much as we could about sailing and sailboats whilst working full time. Josh worked at a sugar mill as an Electrician and instrumentation technician and Phoebe worked an online business and as a Librarian’s Assistant. In March of 2023 we set sail from our home port of Ballina, NSW, to embark on our first season of cruising up the East Coast of Queensland having only sailed Innerbloom a handful of times. It sounded insane…and it was! We were taking a chance on a dream having little to no control over its outcome. But we’re now at the tail end of our first season of sailing with no plans of stopping any time soon! We strive for transparency on our channel which means that we quite literally share all of the ebbs and floods of our novice sailing journey. It is our immense pleasure to share our story and adventures with you on the tube! So if you’re new here - hop aboard and be sure to hit subscribe to be notified of weekly videos.

Mark Jardine spoke to Duncan Hepplewhite of Sailingfast about the WASZP Games 2025, which is being held at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) in August. The event has already attracted 227 entries, and could go as high as 300, so is set to be possibly the biggest foiling dinghy event ever. Most of the racing will be held on three race courses in Portland Harbour, but there will also be a Marathon Race, with the entire fleet starting on a single start line, racing in both the harbour and Weymouth Bay. It's going to be an amazing sight! #sailing #foiling #foilinggeneration
