Man Overboard Devices have come a long way in the last few years with more features packed into smaller devices, but with all these features it can sometimes be difficult to understand what they all do. I spoke to Wescom Group's Jack Sharland to find out more about sMRT Alert and what all the acronyms, such as DSC and AIS, actually mean. I also met up with Fenton Long and Paul Pournaris who are the distributors of sMRT Alert in Australia. Find out more about sMRT Alert at https://www.smrtsos.com/products/distress-beacons

If I were brand new to sailing or boating or I just got a boat and it didn't come with an organized core set of tools, I would have loved for someone to tell me what those core tools are to have onboard. With sailboats the answer isn't always big tools or more tools. Sometimes it's small ones, and ones that can do multiple jobs while storing away small, but it's always ones that you can get a good amount of force on as most things you interact with will be corroded. These are the tools that, after about 6 years of sailboat ownership and number of coastal cruises, I wouldn't leave the dock without, and which are sufficient to do most jobs on the boat that could need immediate attention. The goal is to cary as few tools as possible while still getting the job done. Fewer tools means less weight, less stuff to keep organized, and less searching for specialty sizes or types of tools, and tools that work well in small spaces. I've got all the tools listed below with links for easy purchase. I've added some tool sets and a couple additional pieces you may find useful. If I was putting together a core tool set from scratch, here's what I'd get (these are better examples than what I own now): Ratcheting Screw Driver: https://amzn.to/46wiXDe Large Screw Drivers: https://amzn.to/4kom9nP Miniature Screw Drivers: https://amzn.to/44lkj2s WD-40: https://amzn.to/4lHSIyb Tef-Gel: https://amzn.to/4eFGYdk Allen Keys/Wrenches: https://amzn.to/4lCP34E Stuby Wrench Set (SAE/Imperial): https://amzn.to/3Tutw23 Stuby Wrench Set (Metric): https://amzn.to/3GBnR7p Crescent/Monkey Wrench: https://amzn.to/44TDel2 Lineman Pliers: https://amzn.to/3U3jzJ6 Needle Nose Pliers: https://amzn.to/408sLQ9 Standard Pliers: https://amzn.to/44Sf4Ya Locking Pliers: https://amzn.to/44j6jGm Hammer: https://amzn.to/4nzNwhH Mallet: https://amzn.to/3IkgD8s Blowtorch: https://amzn.to/4lg2HuB Oscillating Tool: https://amzn.to/460GoEK Hacksaw: https://amzn.to/4lu6CUI

The Ocean Race Europe will take place between 10th August and 21st September 2025, following a debut event in the summer of 2021. The racing is in IMOCA yachts, the same as in the Vendée Globe, but this time with four crew and an OBR (On Board Reporter) who will document the action on board. It will build on the foundations of the inaugural race and will be held under the banner of “Connecting Europe” with a race course that stretches from the Baltic Sea, through the North Sea and English Channel, into the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean before a finish in Boka Bay, Montenegro - the first time The Ocean Race will compete on the Adriatic Sea. The start is in Kiel, Germany, and there are stopovers in Portsmouth in the UK, a fly-by in Matosinhos / Porto in Portugal, then in to the Mediterranean and on to Cartagena in Spain, Nice in France, Genova in Italy, followed by the final leg round to Boka Bay in Montenegro. Seven teams are taking part: Team Malizia skippered by Boris Herrmann, Team Holcim - PRB skippered by Rosalin Kuiper, Team Paprec Arkéa skippered by Yoann Richomme, Team Be Water Positive skippered by Scott Shawyer, Allagrande Mapei Racing skippered by Ambrogio Beccaria, Biotherm skippered by Paul Meilhat and Team AMAALA skippered by Alan Roura. I recently went to Portsmouth to talk with Phil Lawrence, Race Director for The Ocean Race Europe, Peter Rusch, the Communication Director, and Pip Hare, who will be competing on Team Be Water Positive. We've had the benefit of cooking our own pasture raised chops for over 3 years now and think we have perfected the method of how to get crispy crackling with juicy, tender and succulent meat. However, it got us wondering... do our methods stack up with the commercial pork chop products available to the average consumer? In this video I show you how we cook our pork chops here at the Ramshackle Ranch and we also test these methods on local commercial pasture raised pork and barn raised pork. Here are the cooking times and internal temperatures for cooking your pork chops to perfection. We like our pork chops medium to medium rare so we aim for an internal temperature of 63°C (145°F) in thickest part of the chop before consuming. For very thick chops (more than an inch and a half thick) from an older animal after searing the skin for 4 minutes I sear on each side for about 6 minutes at high heat until the thickest part of the chop is at least 45°C (113°F). I then place in an oven between 160°C (320°F) and 180°C (356°F) until the internal temperature reaches 55°C (131°F) to 60°C (140°F) this usually take 20 minutes. I then pull out of the oven to rest for 5 minutes and crank the broiler/grill to bring up the bubbly crackling which usually takes around 5 minutes under the grill. For chops under an inch and a half thick after searing the skin for a couple of minutes I sear on each side for about 4 minutes until the thickest part of the chop is between 50°C (122°F) and 55°C (131°F). I then leave to rest for 5 minutes before placing under a hot broiler/grill to bring up the crackling. This rest time and the cooking under the grill/broiler usually brings the internal temperature of a slimmer chop up to 63°C (145°F). #porkchops #cookinghacks #pork Support us and gain early access to videos and other exclusive rewards. This week aboard SV GOAT we sail north through the Euboean Gulf, a mountain-flanked stretch of sea known for its wildly unstable wind patterns. One moment we're cruising with a 10-knot breeze on the beam; the next, a 25-knot gust slams us from the opposite direction. It was a demanding leg, but we made it safely to Chalkida (Chalcis)—just in time for one of the most spectacular sailing rituals in Greece. At exactly 2AM, the legendary Euripus (Chalkida) retractable bridge opens for boat traffic. A line of vessels forms on both sides of the strait, VHF radios buzzing with port authority instructions. As the bridge retracts, one by one, sailboats and ships pass through in the dead of night, under city lights and watchful spectators lining the promenade. It’s not just a crossing—it’s a show. But that’s not all… We also install and configure our new Safiery Phased Coherent Radar Tank Level Sensor for our starboard water tank—a massive upgrade to our onboard monitoring system. Unlike traditional float or ultrasonic sensors, this next-gen radar sensor uses phased-coherent radar technology to measure tank levels with sub-millimeter precision, even in sloshing tanks or complex shapes. It connects directly to the NMEA2000 network, seamlessly integrating with our Signal K and KIP dashboard for real-time and historical water level tracking. This sensor is a game-changer for anyone serious about off-grid sailing and resource management. IN THIS EPISODE – Navigating the unpredictable winds of the Euboean Gulf – Reaching Chalkida and preparing for the iconic 2AM bridge opening – Crossing the Euripus Strait alongside commercial and private vessels – Installing the Safiery Phased Coherent Radar Tank Sensor – Explaining why this tech is a leap forward in onboard tank monitoring – Sailing deeper into the heart of Greece ABOUT THE CHALKIDA BRIDGE The Euripus Bridge opens just once per night due to intense and fast-reversing tidal currents. The strait is only ~40m wide, with water speeds up to 12km/h. Local lore says even Aristotle struggled to understand its behavior. Today, sailors must wait for clearance and join the nocturnal parade—a bucket-list experience in Greek cruising. ABOUT THE SAFIERY TANK SENSOR The Safiery Phased Coherent Radar Tank Sensor is a no-contact, battery-powered radar sensor capable of tracking liquid levels in fresh, grey, or black tanks with millimeter precision. It is immune to condensation, foam, and sloshing errors—unlike ultrasonic or float sensors. Fully NMEA2000 compatible, it enables smart, precise tank level monitoring—perfect for long-range cruisers. The final day of Helly Hansen Salcombe Merlin Week dawned to another day of blue skies with a light Southwester forming in the harbour and forecast to increase. The overall result was still up for grabs with both leading protagonists in the morning race. With the flood tide against, the fleet split to both ends of the line with Tom Gillard and Rachel Gray starting near the Watch House and Christian Birrell and Sam Brearey on the Portlemouth shore. This was the most difficult video I have had to do to date. We were left with no choice but to put our beloved Golden boy in heaven. He's crossed over the rainbow bridge to be the fun and free playful pup he was with us. Kobe's Story: We got him from the Mid FL Golden Retriever Rescue and adopted him when he was a 1 1/2 years old. He loved to play in the back yard and tear up the plants and bushes and did his holes. We gave him the best life we could. He went camping with us, dog parks, beaches and swimming whenever we could. He grew close to me (Nancy) during covid when I was working from home and he loved his treats! We knew that he was abused as a puppy however, we didn't know how severe those injuries were until now. This whole time he suffered without complaint from a broken hip that never quite healed correctly. Because of the sustained injuries while he was a puppy, he was always in constant pain but we never knew until recently. We discovered the extent of his injuries along with advance stages of arthritis and hip dysplasia. We made the difficult choice after the pain and inflammatory meds didn't work that we would like Bear tell us when he wanted to let go of us. The vet suggested that we could try laser therapy but that would only provide little relief if any. We made his last few months (we thought we had more time) as comfortable as possible and decided that we would not chose to put him down until he told us. He didn't want to walk anymore and a golden that doesn't want to eat? and cried all night long from the pain was too much for us. It was time. We both took the day off work, gave him his last walk, last hamburger from macdonld's and he peacefully crossed over the rainbow bridge with Andy and I holding him. It has been difficult for all of us including our other 2 dogs who wonder what happened to him. 3 months later and we still mourn the loss of our beloved boy and laugh at the funny things he did and talk about how much he would have enjoyed sailing with us as he loved being on the boat with us. A big round of applause for Josh and his debut behind the editing desk! 👏✨ He was eager to lend his hand to this episode - fondly revisiting his day with Darrin the Yacht Rigger as they installed a reconditioned Profurl C420 roller furler on our 40-year-old Adams35, Innerbloom. We felt incredibly fortunate to have Darrin’s expertise guiding us through the process, sharing those tips and tricks that we’ll carry forward on our sailing adventures. In this episode, we also open up about what it actually cost us to fit a secondhand unit vs splurging on something brand new - a choice that turned out to be even wiser after we managed to damage our “new-to-us” pre-loved vlogging camera on only its second use. Safe to say, every penny saved counts! 😅 Thanks for coming along with us! ⚓️💙 We’re a little behind on our videos - we’re just having too much fun! The fifth morning dawned with wall to wall sunshine and a 5 knot SW sea breeze popped in at the surprisingly early time of 8.30, promising a good day's racing for the 102 teams. There was more drama on the start line, this time in the afternoon race with a general recall and boats black flagged. We have commentary from the morning and afternoon starts, as well as an interview with Simon and Anna Blake, winners of Race 9. Going into the final day, Tom and Rachel are vulnerable having been BFD meaning a number of teams could win if they slip up again. They will need a fourth if Christian and Sam win and they are in the same race. Interesting! When we first learned about sailing we were sitting on the beach watching a boat go past out to sea. We wondered what the view would be like as it sailed along the coast. Five years later, doing it on our own boat, we know exactly what it’s like and this video shares the joys and challenges faced with coastal cruising the east coast of Australia. Sailing close to the coast we take in the views and stay out of the worst of the chop but some bays can’t be avoided. Past the halfway stage and the weather served up another wind direction for the fourth day of Helly Hansen Salcombe Merlin Week. Today it was the dreaded Northwesterly, a wind direction that gives great racing in the upper reaches of the Ria but a start line that is in exactly the worse place. With random gusts from every direction, including vertical, it is one of the more challenging starts to get right.
