We left Germany towards The Hague in Netherlands and we fell in love with the city. Our stay was so incredible that we decided to spend a few more days. IT CAME DOWN TO THE WIRE DESPITE THE ‘HEAT’ From Disaster to Triumph The temperature hit 35 plus degrees in the sun and that was agony as the crews waited to get a final start for almost 3 hours. With the breeze literally switching thru 180 degrees of the compass, to their credit the race committee waited just one minute before the official cut off time to lower the AP flag to get the race away. On que Sydney Harbour delivered with a 15 knot North Easter to see the fleet scream to the top mark. Where we reported yesterday it was supposed tp be a three horse race for the title; very quickly it became a battle Royale with Sutech buried at the start, and for them it was game over. It was a classic match race with Manly Surf n Slide taking the lead with Brydens in hot pursuit. It stayed that way to the finish and that was reflected in the overall result. Manly Surf n Slide winners of the championship with the final result split by a mere 3 seconds from Byrdens. Taking Bronze were the lads from Sutech, but not far behind was TJS and Southern Beaches Rugby and Growthbuilt. The results page lists the rest of the champions in hot pursuit. Whilst in the 13 foot class it was “Mighty-Mite” who took the lead from the beginning and they protected their position to ensure they went home with the silverware; closely followed by Bartley Construction and Big Foot rounding out with the Bronze medal for third overall. As we have repeatedly reported, the gap in the 13 class was so small in elapsed time; we have the future of the class well in hand.

Why do we do this? There are easier ways to travel. Faster. Less expensive. More comfortable. But over and over again, we return to cruising sailboats to give us that feeling we can't get any other way. This video is a montage review of how this whole cruising thing got going for us. I can't believe it's going on 15 years and three boats now. We hope to share the journey and some rambling thoughts about what it all means... As for the soundtrack, I hated everything about the original song when it played on the radio every 40 minutes. By slowing it down, remixing, and adding a little some-somethin, I feel like it's appropriate.

Race 6 was ground hog day with exactly the same conditions. Those who chose the left side of the course again it paid, those who were forced right were in a world of pain. Again the 13ths showed a clean pair of heals with ‘Mighty Mite’ upstaging many of the 16’s with just raw uphill speed and with the downhill angle in their favour the young bucks showed the old bulls how to make the best of the gusty conditions. Bottom line, as the results show, and as Mike McMahon the official ‘results officer’ dissected the spreadsheet, there is a 3 way split for the title Sutech, Manly Surf n Slide and the ever lurking Brydens. In the 13’s its Mighty-Mite leads pursued by Bartley Constructions and Bigfoot – again it will be the final race that will produce the champion. With 40 plus degrees in temperature predicted for the day the heat will be well and truly in the kitchen.

Among many eligible contenders, this has to be the best Fastnet story of 2017. A group of eight teenagers from an inner London school in a deprived area where few have any knowledge or interest in sailing, mounted a campaign to compete in the legendary Fastnet Race. Led by an inspired geography teacher the students didn’t just learn to sail, but immersed themselves in raising sufficient support to restore and campaign a 45ft racing yacht from the 1980s. Their story is remarkable.

As the Volvo Ocean Race fleet heads north to Hong Kong the breeze drops, temperatures soars and the re-shuffling of the pack begins. Tense times.

Gibraltar to Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Meet the two new crew members as we make our way down the North African coast. It was a bumpy start as we sailed away from Gibraltar but soon became a very gentle sail due to the lack of breeze. Alex Thompson on Hugo Boss sailed by to say hi and the first thing he said was “why have you reduced your sails” we thought that was a bit cheeky as we had full sail plus our motor was going at the time, our 8 knots of boat speed was no match for the Boss as he was doing more than twice our speed.
