When we set off this season, Tonga was on the list but it was heavily overshadowed by the likes of French Polynesia, Marquesas and the Cook Islands. The focus was on places like Bora Bora, Mo'orea and Aitutaki. So let me tell you, we were very surprised by how much we LOVE Tonga. LOVE! Tonga is a Sovereign nation and the first of such we have visited in our Pacific Island tour. It has a different vibe. An authentic one. With 196 islands, only 36 are inhabited. You can can catch a bit of island life or truly get away from it all. In this Adventure, we land in the Vava’u group in the town of Neiafu to check in with customs. The town is a bustling place with markets full of fish and veg. Crazy little Chinese shops stuffed with everything you could need. And a Moorings charter fleet that helps the economy sustain many friendly Yachty bars and restaurants. We were hooked right away and decided that this is where we would spend the last couple months of our season before heading south to get away from cyclone territory. The beauty of the Tongan Kingdom is stunning. The beaches are pristine and the people welcoming to their villages. Poteva finire molto peggio: momenti di tensione alla Volvo Ocean Race, durante la navigazione verso Hong Kong, in pieno Indiano, a bordo di Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag. Durante un cambio di vele, il giovane velista australiano Alex Gough è stato trascinato via da un’onda durante un cambio di vele con 15/20 nodi di vento. Il team si è subito messo in modalità di sicurezza, ammainando la vela di prua e avvicinandosi a Gough che illeso ha potuto risalire a bordo dopo circa sette minuti. Scallywag ha dunque ripreso la regata.. “Era sul bompresso, io ero al timone, è arrivata un’onda e lo ha sbalzato via come se fosse su un cavallo.” Ha spiegato lo skipper David Witt. “La cosa importante è che lo abbiamo recuperato e sta bene. Però è un incidente che mostra bene quanto sia difficile vedere un uomo a mare. Persino di giorno, con il sole e con 18 nodi di vento… Di certo di notte a 20 nodi sarebbe stato molto peggio.” Gough non indossava salvagente e non era legato. Witt ha detto che avrebbe dovuto prestare più attenzione o quantomeno dire al timoniere cosa stesse facendo, prima di andare sul bompresso. “Sono stato abbastanza stupido, ma fortunatamente i ragazzi se ne sono accorti. E hanno reagito in fretta. Sto bene, è stato abbastanza spaventoso però.” Ha detto Gough. Il video del salvataggio, che vi mostriamo in calce, è da manuale.

Hinnerk Weiler ist in Hamburg bei Bastian Hauck an Bord. Der hat ein neues Schiff und darum sprechen die Zwei als erstes darüber, wie Basti von einem kleinen Folkeboot aus Holz zu einem 15 Tonnen schweren Stahlboot kommt, das eigentlich für die Arktis gebaut wurde. Aktuell hat er aber noch keine Pläne wohin es mit Tadorna Kabira (arabisch für die die große Tadorna) gehen soll. Stattdessen genießt er die Winterzeit an Bord mit Heizung und Dusche zwischen Landungsbrücken und Elbphilharmonie, wo die beiden Segler im Salon des Bootes durch weitere Themen der Segelszene streifen: Da geht es vor allem um die Messesaison und Termine in Düsseldorf. Denn am Wochenende startet dort die boot, wo beide gemeinsam im Refit-Center auf der Bühne stehen und dort ein buntes Programm aus Vorträgen und Workshops präsentieren. Außerdem erzählen sie auch über das Segeln auf anderen Bühnen: Bastian beispielsweise über seinen Törn durch den Dalslands Kanal und Hinnerk vom Great Loop und über das Einhandsegeln auf dem Atlantik. Ein wunder Punkt kommt auch zur Sprache: Hinnerks Paulinchen. – Die liegt noch immer in Panama und er sucht dafür einen neuen Skipper. Le Pozo Inesperado est une minuscule caleta située sur une ile au sud du canal Moradela. Ce soir là les conditions étaient exceptionnellement calmes. Cela nous a permis de faire ces vues inhabituelles dans cette région sachant que la pluie et le vent y sont omniprésents.

While anchored between Chub Cay and Bird Cay of the Berry Islands in the Bahamas, we got hit by an unexpected storm! Filming was the last thing on our minds during the storm, besides it was dark, so here is a video of us telling the story! Lesson learned: Always get an updated weather report. DAILY! We were not expecting the wind to change direction till the next day and thought we were fine where we were anchored for at least one more night. The wind blew a constant 20 knots or so from the East and was causing a bit of uncomfortable fetch. Randall spent a majority of the day figuring out ways to reduce the overall swing of the boat at anchor. Just before sunset the wind started clocking around to the South causing the ocean swells to build and come rolling into our anchorage. Within 5 mins. we had no choice but to pull anchor and move away from the breaking water. The Berry Islands are located on the edge of a large bank with very shallow water. It can be extremely hard to move from place to place depending on the depth of your keel. We draw 5' and according to our charts we were not able to move further North between Chub Cay and Bird Cay. We were also not able to stay at the Chub Cay Marina due to it being destroyed during Hurricane Matthew. We had no choice, but to make our way into the oncoming ocean swells and wind and to spend the night out at sea. This was Kenzie's worst nightmare! The wind picked up to around 35-40 knots through the night and we had ocean waves crashing on the deck! Randall became extremely seasick and spent the whole night puking and trying his best to sleep down below. After several hrs. of motoring away from the islands and of drifting down wind, we were able to deploy our sea anchor which helped slow us down significantly! The boat did a fantastic job handling the storm and we never once worried about it's capability in the rough waters. We were glad for our experience sailing in Oregon and for our preparations made to the boat. We spent the entire night out at sea in this horrible storm and by 4am began to make our way back to a safe anchorage. Grass family (Poaceae) series No.3., Family:Poaceae, Genus:Triticum, Species:T.aestivum -----HOW TO MAKE THIS VIDEO----- 1. Prepare whole grain wheat without roasted, which is being sold at the store. 2. Prepare sterile water. (100ppm Hypochlorous acid solution = A 1-in-500 dilution of household bleach with tap water) 3. Wash wheat with sterile water 3-times. 4. Immerse popcorns in sterile water a half or one day. 5. Put wheat onto a clean sponge containing enough sterile water. 6. Shoot photos at 5-mins intervals. ------------------------------------------------------ I used a CANON 9000D and a CANON 50mm F1.8 STM lens, to capture photos which were later combined into a timelapse video.
