After an extremely challenging race the competitors settled in to Manly Yacht Club to compare stories and enjoy a thirst quenching drink given the extreme temperatures that accompanied the nor westerly winds. Bow Caddy caught up with some of the winners to hear about their adventures.

+++ Deutsche Version im unteren Abschnitt +++ In 2018 BAVARIA YACHTS is celebrating its 40th birthday! 40 years ago, the entrepreneur Winfried Herrmann began building boats in the Franconian town of Giebelstadt in southern Germany. And this in an entirely new manner. He was the first in Germany to introduce a modern assembly line production to boatbuilding: „The days of handmade boats are numbered,“ he said at the time. In much the same way, he had already transformed his original company, the window production company “HeHa” that he ran together with business partner Georg Haubner, from a simple workshop into an industrial type production unit for plastic windows. At the height of commercial success, the two asked themselves what else could be manufactured from plastic. Watersports was booming in those years. GRP had already established itself as the main boatbuilding material, but the majority of boats were made abroad and imported. Here, the two businessmen saw their chance. At the "Interboot" boat show, the completely new "BAVARIA" yachts were presented to the public for the first time. Two modern sailing boats, one seven, the other eight metres long. Both had raised foredecks which comparatively gave them a lot of space below deck, completely in the sense of the BAVARIA YACHTS motto at that time "better living at sea!" But also, the new yacht builders proved themselves to be innovative and, for example, carried out customer surveys on the boat fairs or tried to supply their customers also with suitable marina berths in which to base their new boats. When the BOM issues a Strong Wind Warning for Sydney Harbour you know the Helly Hansen Women’s Challenge is going to be action packed. With a north westerly breeze of 10-15 knots expected to build to 20 to 25 knots in the late morning with gusts of up to 30 knots the fleet hit the water after a last minute change of start location. Whilst a few of the yachts had tested their kites in the warm up, very few actually raised them in the race, preferring to keep their boat and crew safe in the tricky conditions. Little Nico led the fleet around the course and she came third in the Women’s Helm category beaten by Sirius and No Friends in Division 1 with Ratty Tooey, followed by Melody and Moonraker respectively 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Division 2. In the All Female Crew section, Division 1 was won by PT 73, followed by Zeusus with Division 2 being won by Tana followed by Sassy and Alcamy. In the Yngling section, Female Helm only Black Adder survived the day from three entries. Bow Caddy was there to catch the action.

This week we sailed with the local pod of Dolphins up to one of our favourite spots in NZ, the Broken Group on Great Barrier Island. We met up with our friends from SV Aquillon and went crayfish hunting. We found a good spot and managed to get 5 good sized crays. We cooked them up and then motored off to smokehouse bay where we had some fun on a massive rope swing. The Broken Group have been good to us and Chris managed to spear two more Kingfish for another sashimi feast. The core of "Family Circus" is Chris (Dad / Captain), Sayo (Mom / Admiral), Aya (First Officer / Deckhand) and Miya (Baby / Stainless Polisher). After many years in business in Vancouver we were tired of life inside the box and wanted to make a change, we just weren't exactly sure what would be next. In July of 2016, when Sayo was six months pregnant, we decided (somewhat at the last minute) to fly to New Caledonia for one last holiday before the baby was born.
