To mark World Oceans Day, here’s a flashback of the scientific mission that forms the focus of the work carried out by 6 European researchers from the EPHEMARE project, which we welcomed aboard Race for Water in Guadeloupe in September 2017. Jérome Cachot, Bénédicte Morin (University of Bordeaux in France) and Fransesco Regoli (Marche Polytechnic University in Italy) are working tirelessly to protect the oceans from plastic pollution. With light winds after midnight and into the morning of May 16 go our hopes for a late day arrival. Moderate winds out of the south develop in the afternoon to help us on our way but also bring in showery weather. We enter the Thimble Shoal Channel around midnight, and are finally anchor down in Hampton at 0430, May 17.

In this episode we give you a tour around our sailboat, a Bavaria 47 yacht called Dream. We are currently sailing around the Aegean sea. We left Crete at the beginning of May and are doing an anti-clockwise circuit of the Aegean. Dick tells of the race in 1962 when a new, young Australian team faced the might of the New York Yacht Club and its defender weatherly. Sit frank Packer's gretel was a close contender and in a reaching race Mosbacker paused and Storrock and his crew pounced and surfed pass then to take the race and beat the defender for the first time in many challengers for the old mug. The boat is just over 18 feet long, and I wanted to be able to load and launch it myself. The idea was simple; build a strong but simple rear arm so that the 18' Hobie Tandem Island can easily slide up a wooden rail system. Later we go sailing on Tomales Bay California! Then after that, I do it all solo.

With all the preparations having to be done to our beloved Wake (not to mention to us) before heading out into the wild blue to chase that eclipse, going far and going free is not in the cards quite yet....so I thought back on our inaugural sail home back in February, from Mallorca to Italy, and the three separate pods of dolphins that kept up with us for hours, dancing on the surface of the water.
