Leg 10 started in the Volvo race on a bight, sunny windless day with a fierce tide. First it pushed Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag close to being over the line and in their efforts not to go over they infringed Dee Caffari's Turn the Tide (?) on Plastic and they had to do turns. Everybody went to the Eastern shore, except Scallywag, and the tide turn made a slow but steady exit. The Scallys were on the opposite shore in the tide and in trouble. Using the Monitor Windvane for Self Steering, Jib block set up and Racor Fuel filters, while sailing the Indian Ocean to Chagos. Fighting contrary wind and ocean currents and a mysterious engine failure....after 15 days we arrived in the remote atoll of Chagos. Sailing our Bluewater sailboat Brick House from SriLanka to Chagos there was a lot for us to consider while sailing in rough seas, as well as calms, but always with a sideways current making sailing southwest difficult. Patrick set up our Monitor Sailboat Windvane self steering when the wind hit about 12 knots and it steered us flawlessly the whole way saving us from using the electricity for the autopilot... Patrick also shows our setup with our jib blocks to control the shape of the jib for sailing to windward, and later for downwind sailing. Two important things to learn as you are sailing around the world. Installing a Racor Filter fuel filter system onboard years ago was fortuitous...our fuel got pretty shaken up, and our engine failed due to dirty fuel. . Finally wrapping up this four part series on my head build out! In this episode I measure and drill out the deck fitting and the hole for the vent in the hole on my Alberg 30. Boats of this age do not have a cored hull so the beauty is you don't need to seal the core on the vent hole because the entire hull is solid hand laid fiberglass! I make my project videos on the slow side letting people see what I did and how I dealt with obstacles, in past videos my viewers have thanked me for not jumping over all of the details and getting right to the finished project so while this might not be the most exciting video it might help some people out there see how I dealt with certain aspects of the project. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, fifteen months after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it.
