The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2018 pitches some of the world’s most imposing yachts in close competition. First held in 1980, the 29th edition features some 44 yachts, ranging in size from just over 18 metres (60 feet) all the way up to 44 metres (144 feet). The crews will be of the highest calibre, exhibiting the requisite dedication, skill and finesse to manoeuvre these powerful craft on the spectacular waters of the Costa Smeralda from 2 – 8 September. Organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS), which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017, and the International Maxi Association, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is the second longest-running event in the Rolex yachting portfolio, and a pivotal part of the brand’s six-decade-long association with the sport. Rolex has been a partner of the YCCS since 1984 and Title Sponsor of this regatta since 1985.

A New World Record in the Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race. 🌍🏆 Phil Sharp's Class40 Imerys Clean Energy has taken line honours in the 2018 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race in an elapsed time of 8 days 4 hours 14 minutes 49 seconds, winning the Class40 Division and setting a new world record in the race for yachts 40ft or under (subject to ratification). The team smashed the previous record by 15 hours. The victorious Imerys Clean Energy crew: Phil Sharp, Julien Pulvé, Pablo Santurdé and Sam Matson were met on the dock by friends, family and fans of the race. “It hasn't really sunk in yet, but it is just fantastic to take line honours, the win in the Class40s, and break the world record!” exclaimed an elated Phil Sharp. “This is definitely the toughest race in the northern hemisphere, harder than a transatlantic and all credit to the team who stuck at it and were exceptional, especially when the going got tough. You don't expect to do a race like this without breaking gear. We ripped our smaller spinnaker before halfway and for the last three days we have had no wind instruments, so it was back to old school feeling the breeze.” “During the race we saw real extremes of challenging weather conditions, from heavy downwind, to light upwind sailing, and although in our class we had other competitive boats that pushed us, it turned out to be very much a race of attrition. #Sailing in to #NY harbour- liberty & ellis islands | #SeaTV This video is about Sailing into NY Harbor from the Ocean: In order to find the currents information refer to Eldridge - Tide and the Current book of the present year or use one of the tides & current websites recommended below. The reference point is The Narrows, NY Harbor - which is located at under the bridge - mid channel (40°36.56’N 72°02.77’W) Ideally getting under the Verrazano should be time for the time where the flood starts (south to north).The tide typically runs for approximately 6 hours with velocities ranging from 1.4 - 2.3 knots (depending on moon cycle). The maximum flood is 2 hours and 25 minutes after the flood starts. If you happened to miss the flood window, you would just have to take into account being pushed back the ebb (north to south). Ebbs (velocities are ranging from 1.7 - 2.5 knots and the maximum ebb is 3 hours and 15 minutes after the ebb starts. If that happens to try to steer your boat as much as west as possible (remember - maximum current will be in the middle) where the current is relatively weaker. On the east side, the current is relatively stronger as it is affected with both the Hudson River current and the East River Current. Sailing by Liberty and Elis Islands: Identify white floating marks around both islands that are designating the security zone around these islands. Avoid getting between these marks and the islands as if you do - you’ll get a police boat approaching you in just a few minutes ;-) Do not attempt going west of Liberty Island (behind the statue) as this area is restricted as well as contains unexpected shallows. Same for Elis Island (that also has a bridge running between the Island and Liberty State Park which is pretty short). Please note that the area south of Liberty Island is rocky, and in low tide, depth is getting extremely shallow (between 30cm - 2.5m/ 1-7.5 feet). If you wish to navigate west of the Statue of Liberty in order to get a spectacular view of the harbor to enter a well-marked channel with red and green buoys (remember: Red Right Return! Meaning on your way west you’d like to keep red buoys to your starboard and green buoys to your port). The first buoy is a nun red buoy 2, marked in Navionics as “National Dock Channel Buoy 2” (40°41.155’N, 74°2.657’W). The channel runs south of Liberty Island and narrows as it gets more west and closer to Liberty State Park. If you follow the buoys all the way in your will end up at a well-protected cove where you can anchor overnight. Make sure to check your depth before anchoring - in general - the northern part is deeper (3-4.5m/9-14 feet) than the southern part (rocks awash - 1.25m/4.9 feet). (See Navionics screenshots). We're back in Vancouver for a visit! Of course, within hours of landing the first thing we do is set up camp on my mom's boat and head out to explore the ocean around Vancouver. We visit Eikens, an out of the way bay up Howe Sound that has water that I swear is the same temperature as in Fiji and I catch some prawns with a salty old sailor. Miya gets to check out to her first International Pride Parade and we head across the Georgia Straight to New Castle Island where we explore an old abandoned sandstone quarry and find a hidden oasis that's a local favorite. The core of "Family Circus" is Chris (Dad / Captain), Sayo (Mom / Admiral), Aya (First Officer / Deckhand) and Miya (Baby / Stainless Polisher). After many years in business in Vancouver we were tired of life inside the box and wanted to make a change, we just weren't exactly sure what would be next. In July of 2016, when Sayo was six months pregnant, we decided (somewhat at the last minute) to fly to New Caledonia for one last holiday before the baby was born. Day 3 of HIRW saw the IRC fleet start their long island race from Dent Passage in a 20 knot wind. The fleet raced our of the Passage and headed north on their various courses.
