Fin 2014, en Nouvelle Calédonie, nous avons cassé le safran de notre voilier, un Jeanneau Gin Fizz, en manœuvrant dans le corail (une mauvaise idée). Heureusement, notre safran semi-suspendu a parfaitement joué son rôle de fusible protecteur de la coque et de la mèche, ce qui nous a permis de rentrer sans problème à Nouméa pour sortir le voilier. Nous avons béni cette installation ! Mais l'évènement s'étant produit une semaine avant Noël, le timing pour réparer était très serré. Nous allions être contraints d'annuler la croisière prévue ensuite, et rester bloquer à terre pendant une durée indéterminée. Nous sommes alors vraiment dépités. C'est à ce moment qu'Isabelle croise, sur le parking, un de nos voisins de ponton, Oyer. Particulièrement doué et sympa, il décide de nous aider, nous indique le matériel à acheter, nous prête son garage, ses outils et nous affirme qu'une semaine, c'est largement suffisant pour remettre à flot avec un safran neuf (!?!). Au final, il réalise pratiquement la totalité du travail. Check that video out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67EoCIl5kl8 After dropping our friends off in Nassau, so they could catch a flight back home, we thought we would try for a 3rd time to get our propane tank filled at the Brown's Marina while here. Trying to get propane in Nassau has been a pain in the butt! Most places that we have found in The Bahamas will have you leave your propane tank over night and then have you pick it up again the next morning, filled and ready to go. We find this to be highly unreliable. On more than one occation, we have returned to pick up our tank the following morning/afternoon, only to find that it hasn't been filled yet, and might not get filled for another day or two. This is very frustrating! We have been waiting for a full day and a half to pick up our propane tank from Brown's Marina in Nassau. We have had to stay at a marina during this time, which has cost us $60 a night! After finding out that the tank will NOT be filled today, we didn't know what else to do. As we were walking past a grocery store we noticed a PROPANE TRUCK parked in the parking lot! We were extremely lucky to bump into the works as they were walking out of the store on their lunch break. They were so kind and willing to allow us to retrieve our tank from Brown's Marina, and bring it to them, so it could be filled right there and then. Bahamas Crossing Imminent! Final Prep - Lazy Bag Install! With our Bahamas Gulf Stream crossing only a couple days away, we're ticking things off the list to make sure the boat's in top shape for offshore sailing. The last major item is our mainsail stowage. Currently we're using a sail cover that doesn't, well...cover. Our new sails are much beefier than our tired old ones, so they're just too much for the cover. Luckily we've had a new Lazy Bag (stack pack, mack pack are other variations) on order for a while and the minutes are ticking down to be able to get it installed in time. Otherwise, handling our main will be a giant pain in the #$%! But it arrives just in time and we get it installed despite the Florida heat. Days 5 & 6 of Hamilton Island Race Week completed the regatta under picture perfect conditions. Marcus Blackmore’s Hooligan won IRC Division 1 followed by Matt Allen’s Ichi Ban – a very tight tussle for the entire regatta. This week we prepare the surface of the toe rails and cap rails on the boat for brightwork. I made a number of mistakes and in our typical fashion, the camera was rolling. So join me in my mistakes. Hopefully seeing what we do wrong lets you avoid doing it yourself. I hate to admit I need a bulleted list just to capture the dumbness. - Drove all the way to the boat and forgot the Awlwood Clear Gloss - Didn't apply the clear over the primer within the allotted window - The last mistake had me sand things back to bare wood again. The good news is that in this part 1 of the series you can see how we prepared the surface and the proper way to apply the primer and finish coats of Awlwood MA. While we made a mistake it also led us to the diagram and explanation in the video of a good way to break up the work and jobs into manageable sizes to ensure that the coats are laid in the correct order and with the right timing. To help with this challenge, we also put together a set of Excel and GoogleSheet tools that allows you to plan and record your job and ensure you have the right amount of time between coats. Melissa's boat without live worms and Nic's with worms. Melissa was the first line in, with the first bite. Turns out she only caught a crayfish. It was cute and hung on but she couldn't bring it onto the boat and the cameras weren't rolling. Meanwhile Nic's boat loaded up their hooks with worms and got to fishing. It was a slow start but by the third location they were getting consistent bites. Unfortunately Nic’s boat suffered a series of line tangles but it didn't hurt their game At the end of the day they got 3 walleye and 1 bass. Never seeing Walleye or Pickerel we eagerly returned to our rafted boat base and got our fish fry on. It was really delicious fish, so good we may not have captured it on camera. We highly recommend coming North to have yourself a Pickerel feast, preferably self caught! This is The Boat Life. Nic Morganti and Melissa Auman are moving onto a sailboat.
