Part 5 of a series: Sailing Miami to Key West. We anchor the sailboat at Beer Can Island, aka Raccoon Island in north Miami. Raccoons are so brave (and hungry) that they will swim to boats and climb on board. Ashley and I reminisce about a previous adventure at Cabbage Key when we had raccoons in our boat while we were sleeping.

We loved exploring Carricou, Petit Martinique and Union Islands in the Grenadines. Picture perfect beaches, fires on shore with friends, catching and cooking crayfish and a sunset dinghy party exploring Carricou's mangrove oyster beds are memory makers for sure! We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures! We would love to hear from you. Especially if you are interested in doing something crazy like we are! Maybe we can help answer some questions you have? Thanks and enjoy.

Music: http://www.purple-planet.com Sailing my trailer sailer Neringa from Port Welspool to Refuge Cove with a stop at Tin Mine Cove. Launching at the ramp is tricky but manageable. After arriving and setting up I launch by 12 noon for the hour sail to Tin Mine Cove, a lovely anchorage for wind from the south west to the north east. I exit corner inlet on an outgoing tide with varying wind suitable for sailing. I arrive at Refuge Cove around 3 hours after departing. Picture perfect as always, I spend the rest of the day and the next exploring the cove and surrounding walks to North refuge beach to the north and Kersops Peak to the south. A wonderful trip and highly recommended.

Dennis Webster built his 37-foot plywood catamaran ‘Catalyst’ for just $27,000 and then set off with his family to sail from New Zealand to the Pacific Islands, Guam, Japan and Alaska before sailing down the west coast of Canada and the USA and westward across the Pacific on a 3 year journey packed full of adventures and crazy stories. From frozen fuel, to working on fishing trawlers out of Dutch Harbour, to being hit by 60 knots at anchor, being arrested, a whale collision that almost caused a capsize, this family of five had the adventure of a lifetime on a tiny budget. This battery system was used in the following time-lapse video. (https://youtu.be/OhKNAlLMO4g) The Relay converts 5V/2A (USB input) to 9V/0.8A (camera require). I made this video to help you understand how to use the water maker. Not all water makers are the same but this 31 gallon an hour water maker is pretty impressive and wanted to show you how its done.
In this episode we have a look at Brampton Island and the abandoned resort. We also recount memories of the island in it's heyday and a mysterious murder that was solved by DNA many years later, making it the first murder to be solved in this manner in Australia.
The reason for hauling out had been a tiny little hole in my aft cabin below the water line. At the same time, we wanted to try and fix the hole in my diesel tank. To reach said hole, I had removed a stainless steak water tank which had revealed a whole bunch of lead bars. I had feared that there would be some corrosion hiding below those bars which is why I had not tried to remove them in the water...I guess, this precaution was a clever move...but see yourself... In this episode, we built our own headsail from a Sailrite kit while being in Mexico. This is not really a tutorial, but mostly to give you a small idea of what it entails to tackle a similar project. After spending 9-10 days building the headsail and making a new sail pack, we have to haul out the boat again to inspect the rudder. Made possible by you! An exhilarating sail from Montserrat brings us to St. Kitts for New Year celebrations and exploring. s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) leaves Montserrat, the island with the active volcano, and sails to St.Kitts & Nevis. We depart Little Bay in Montserrat with strong trade winds on our beam, up to 25knots, and we take it easy with reefed main and genoa. After passing the Antiguan island of Redonda, a bare rock sitting 300m out of the sea, the wind further strengthens, and we are soon heavily reefed as it gusts to well over 30kts. We anchor behind Nevis for the night then head to St.Kitts where we suspect New Year Eve activity will be more lively. After checking in at the main town of Basseterre on St.Kitts we anchor for 8 days in the calm waters in the south of the island next to Salt Plage beach bar, near the newly constructed Christophe Harbor. This is where we have a good night out to bring in the new year of 2019. We have a rental car for 3 days to thoroughly explore the sites and hotels on this island. In the north we visit the famous Brimstone Hill Fortress and Arthur’s beach bar. In the south, where the nicest beaches are, we visit The Pavilion, Turtle Beach, Cockleshell Beach and all its beach bars from Reggae Beach to the recently open Park Hyatt Hotel. Then in the middle the Marriott Hotel and the funky beach bars in South Frigate Bay, the Shipwreck bar being the best. After a pampering day at the Park Hyatt we depart St.Kitts for Nevis. 30 Dec 2018 - 8 Jan 2019
When you think about yacht builders in Germany, most likely brands come to mind that build enormous giga yachts that are far outside the spending power of most mortals. However, there is also a very active yacht building industry in Germany producing both power and sailing yachts that offer great value for money and are achievable to a far larger demographic. When I researched this vlog I was surprised to learn that many of these builders belong to the same Group of companies. This vlog takes a look at Hanse Group, and some of the wonderful craft that they build. And for this of you who want to know the complete, rather politically incorrect saying: Heaven is where the police are British, the lovers French, the mechanics German, the chefs Italian, and it is all organized by the Swiss. Hell is where the police are German, the lovers Swiss, the mechanics French, the chefs British, and it is all organized by the Italians.
Anchored beneath the eerie glow of a volcano, we make friends with the locals and Matt is taken by dugout canoe for a Kava drinking session. This is the record of one of the most amazing experiences we have had on our circumnavigation so far, the warmth and friendliness of the people on Tanna blew us away. That was all topped off by standing on the rim of an active volcano as it spewed molten rock into the sky in front of us. Welcome to Valencia, otherwise known as Foodie Paradise! Okay, so it could be argued that all of Spain is foodie paradise- and that's very true- but our first impressions of Valencia is that we're going to eat verrrrry well while we're here. First stop on our tour of Valencia is the Mercat Central, where we sample all sorts of local delicacies (except for Paella, the signature dish of Valencia- oops!). Sated with ham and beer, we excitedly decide to make a fairly major change to our winter plans, and stay here instead!
