We got a slip at Old Bahama Bay and were relieved to have a gentle breeze blowing while in the marina to help cool us down. While at the fuel dock we experienced some frustration when the ignition switch wouldn't start the engine. If you have been following our story you will remember that this isn't the first time we have had to deal with this problem. Luckily it wasn't too difficult for us to bypass and we were able to move out of the way of other cruisers wanting to use the fuel dock. With this being our last destination in The Bahamas, we were sure we wouldn't ever get the chance, but when asking the lobbyist for walking directions to the local grocery store we were told we could ride the marina's bikes there for free! We were so excited! We knew that Hurricane Matthew had hit West End about 7 months earlier and had heard stories of how devastating the destruction had been for many people within its path, but now seeing some of the damage in person was amazing for us. We can't imagine how it must have felt to be in such a storm. It was sad to see torn up homes trying not to fall apart, and skeletons of building fighting to stand up. If there's one thing we have learned while visiting The Bahama's is that the people here are Stronger than the Storm! In this episode of Sailing Nandji, its time to run the hours up on our new engine fang as we sea trial our new motor. After installing our new engine we soon realised that we would be in need of an autopilot as we plan to do a bit of motoring around Indonesia chasing waves. We break the bank and purchase a CPT Autopilot which is stand alone easy to install unit. Yosh installs the autopilot and we sea trial the new autopilot. We may be out of the boatyard but we still have crap every where and lots of little tedious jobs to finalise. Each day whilst we wait for our good camera to be fixed and returned to us, we work 8 hours on the boat anchored somewhere nice away from people and then in the afternoon light, go exploring around the islands. Work hard, Play hard! It is good to be back in a bikini and sailing Langkawi finally. Thank you to everyone who has watched our videos and contributed to our new engine. It is all because of you legends we have been able to install this brand new engine and re-power Nandji. With all this boat work being complete our vessel is becoming indestructible as we get her ready for our next big trip across the Indian Ocean. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia and finally arrived to the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the next big adventure. The work is now complete so look out Thailand and Indonesia, here we come! We departed Australia in July 2017 and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! We've now entered into the 40 degree latitudes. But wait? Am I thinking of the wrong ocean with all the terrible weather I'm expecting? Our passage from Terceira to Ireland is well underway now, but conditions have picked up just enough that we're not feeling so hot. Our departure from the Azores was kind to us, but by day two the seas are growing and we're feeling a little queasy in our stomach. Not much else to do but sit around and wait for it to pass. We expect heavier conditions to come, although on Day 3, things aren't as bad as they're supposed to be. The winds and waves have calmed down a little...but now we have a new problem of the oven not wanting to cook our dinner! Oh well, at least it's only a 10 day passage instead of 25! The penultimate day of the second regatta of the 2019 season brought great conditions on the waters off Puerto Sherry. The sea breeze blew between 12 and 15 knots for the two races sailed. As if to underline just how high the standard is all the way through the eight-boat fleet – after Andy Soriano’s Alegre won the first race of the day, Race 7, and Tina Plattner and the team on Phoenix 11 triumphed in the second windward-leeward, Race 8 – now seven different boats have won races during the four days of racing so far. And the results rollercoaster continued today. The very challenging breezes that are hard to read and to predict, the timing of the windshifts are compounded by the extremely even fleet. From a second row start it is nigh on impossible to gain more than a place or two. The exception today seemed to be Bronenosec who hauled themselves right back into contention for the historic Royal Cup when they improved from fifth to third during the second half of the second race. Those hard earned gains, scored through precision sailing, astute low risk tactics and a keen eye for a developing opportunity are all of what ensure the blue-hulled Bronenosec will enjoy a showdown against their friends and rivals on Azzurra for one of the class’s sought after pieces of silverware. And in the other blue corner is Azzurra who also have a current Olympic champion in a key role, 2016 gold medal winning Nacra 17 helm Santi Lange who joined Azzurra just over a year ago. He is loving the challenge of racing at this difficult venue where he finished third in the 2003 Tornado world championships, the same year Fantela – an ex Optimist World Champion – was crowned World Youth Champion for the first of three times. After winning Thursday’s second race, Azzurra followed up with a second in the first race today to lead the regatta. But the wheels suddenly came off with an all too easily gained eighth place, which relegated them to second, one point behind Bronenosec going into the last day. So too it was a patchy day for Ergin Imre’s Provezza who paired a third to a sixth to lie third. Just four points off the lead, the red-hulled Vrolijk design has every chance of going one better than their second place in Menorca last month. But they were pushed to the wire during one of the most exciting final day showdowns in the history of the 52 SUPER SERIES. The day started with three boats in contention to win the trophy, which dates back to 1995 and the IMS class, Bronenosec – the newest boat in the fleet steered by the young Croatian Olympic gold medal winning hero Sime Fantela – one point ahead of 2017 champions Azzurra. Going into today’s racing, Provezza were four points adrift, but the runners up to Platoon in Mahón last month are sailing with supreme confidence and big smiles. It was only on the last downwind of the last race, when Platoon passed Azzurra, that the regatta title was secured by the Turkish-flagged team – only the second time they have secured an event win after their popular 2017 victory in Puerto Portals, Mallorca. Changes to their Vrolijk-designed boat appear to have helped, but bringing Cutler – whose experience spans Olympic racing and national team coaching as well as America’s Cup and grand prix racing – in to the central role as helm, and a hungry-for-success Hamish Pepper as tactician has been key; the duo supported by unflappable Spanish navigator Nacho Postigo. They finish one point ahead of Azzurra who take second but only on countback against their third placed rivals Bronenosec. The Russian-flagged team put themselves on the back foot when they finished eighth in the first race. Provezza leave Andalucia with the Royal Cup and the circuit lead by two points ahead of Mahón winners, Platoon. Seven of the eight different boats won at least one of the ten races sailed.
