This week I went back to New Jersey to help out my dad as he gets ready to be released from Physical Rehab and skilled nursing care. I took Chasity with me for a little adventure and break from her sister. I scored some serious Grandpa points by getting tickets to Hamilton and taking Chazzy up to New York City. We went to Time Square, went to a German restaurant for dinner, and then went and saw Hamilton on Broadway. Chaz has some German heritage and decided she had never had German food and asked if we could go to a German Place. I found a proper Biergarten to go to, and we ordered good authentic food. (or what passes as authentic food). I also took a trip down to the Barnegat Lighthouse and walked up the 217 steps to get a great view from the observation deck. I hope you enjoy the history of this area and the trip up the tower. Next week my dad comes home, and we start the home rehab to get his strength back up. The boat is constructed of exterior quality plywood, sealed with epoxy and sheathed in glass fibre and epoxy. One of the great beauties of these boats is that the ballast keel is fitted towards the end of the build, enabling the boat to be kept lower in the shed for most of the construction time. Many of them take on crew and teach offshore sailing to experienced sailors who become even more experience after learning how to cross an ocean. Over the years these captains get sailing long distance, offshore passages and yacht deliveries down to an exact science, and we all have a lot to learn from them, especially about ocean sailing, and the different sailing maneuvers and sailing tactics to make the miles roll by in any rough seas, heavy weather, stormy weather, and when becalmed. This week, it’s Hank Schmidt from Offshore Passage Opportunities (OPO) passing on some sailing tips and tricks, and quick hacks to make sailing fun and easy for his crew. He runs the North American Rally to the Caribbean (NARC) every year, twice a year from Newport RI, to Bermuda, and then on to St Marten, and then the return passage back north again, among other offshore passages that sailors looking for offshore experience can sign on it. Hank captains SV Avocation in this rally, his own private yacht. Other boats with other professional captains handle other sailboats in the rally...often Swan sailboats, which are fast raceboats, but also seaworthy amazing offshore sailboats ready to cross oceans. Private owners also sail their own boats in this rally with crew supplied by OPO. They always take paying crew with them. Crew are usually experienced boat owners themselves, smart and successful who want to learn from these professionals, how to cross oceans before they take their own families and yachts offshore. Many of these students will sail their own boats full time in a year or two, or sail around the world. . Others learn it’s not the life for them. It's been a while since I sailed a multiple day passage all by myself...so my belly is a little upside down with my usual pre-departure anxiety nausea. After a quick crash course in repelling we lower ourselves 400 feet into a canyon system unlike any we’ve seen before. The Canyon ends at the magnificent Trafalgar falls, where we bath ourselves in the natural hot pools at the foot of a gigantic waterfall. And then….. Its a Pirates life and where do you hide your treasure? In the spooky secret cove of course! https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode of Sailing Nandji, after 3 long months in Langkawi, the day arrives where we can set some sails and depart onwards to our next adventure. Leaving Langkawi feels like such an accomplishment after working so hard on upgrading our vessel. With hundred's of islands between Langkawi and Thailand, it would be rude of us not to explore some of these magical lands. The geography of the area is simply stunning and then reading about a secret pirate cove hidden away on one of these islands, we knew we had to investigate. Needing to swim through pitch darkness for 80 metres through a bat ridden cave, at times the rock came so close to the waters surface you could barely sneak through without holding your breath. Then once you think your completely lost, you duck under the last rock ledge and emerge into the most beautiful pristine secret pirate cove. The waters of Thailand were run with pirates years ago and this is where they hid their plunder. Behind the emerald light, to the place the eye can not see. TO find the light, you must first find the darkness... Arrrr Thank you to everyone who has watched our videos and contributed to our new engine. It is all because of you legends we have been able to install this brand new engine and re-power Nandji. With all this boat work being complete our vessel is becoming indestructible as we get her ready for our next big trip across the Indian Ocean. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia and finally arrived to the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the next big adventure. The work is now complete and off we go to Thailand on our way to Indonesia. We departed Australia in July 2017 and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.
