After a somewhat less than perfect regatta last month in Puerto Sherry and a seventh place overall, 2018 52 SUPER SERIES champions Quantum Racing restored their winning mojo today in Portugal when they sailed to a second and a first in classic Cascais conditions to lead the Cascais 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week. Second behind Provezza in the first race, which was contested in 17-22kts of NW’ly breeze, Quantum Racing executed a typical Cascais race winning strategy in the second windward-leeward, starting by the committee boat, tacking right early and leading all the way around the fast, bumpy Cascais track. And on the final downwind, as it to shrug off the pent up frustrations from Puerto Sherry, they more than doubled their lead, surfing away to win by 240 metres from Bronenosec. Quantum Racing’s three-point aggregate sees them three points clear of three boats – Provezza, Bronenosec and Azzurra – after the first day of racing at this renowned high-wind venue where last year they won the Rolex TP52 World Championship. Solo sailing can sometimes be lonely. Not for me. I got my friend Galopin to talk to. Being French, he's not at a loss for words. So we banter then turn on the music and enjoy a wonderful sail downwind to Boavista island. Number six of the ten islands of the Cape Verde archipelago. I make landfall in the town of Sal Rei to drop off my boat documents to the local Police and run into sailor friends Juan and Nadia. Later the pirates Tito and Mamadu arrive at the anchorage. And with Mamadu's guidance, he takes us to the working class neighbourhood called Barak. And here we get a taste of Africa, and we love it! But I will have to sail back to Mindelo, and before going we have a "see you later" picnic on a small deserted island with the Mindelo Pirate Gang. While exploring the island we found the remains of an old shipwreck and lots of Sand- hence the name! It was as incredible as it was a bit spooky to be the only people on the entire cay, but it did say in our Passage's South book that it was the best place stage for our departure south to the Dominican Republic! Sailing with a solid beam reach all the way to Luperon, we headed in for the season to hunker down in this fabulously protected hurricane hole. Since it is surrounded by mangroves and situated deeper into the interior of the coast, it allows room for many boats to safely ride out the season. In this episode we free dive on a sunken sailboat which had been abandoned in the bay. Efforts had been made for the last 2 years to contact the owner to ask him to remove it, to no avail. It was therefore deemed abandoned, and although not worth salvaging, people started removing everything off it, including the mast. However, no one had yet had a go at salvaging the stainless steel off it, so we took the opportunity to try recycle the stainless. The operation turned out to be a huge success as we show you how we made a bench seat and 2 table frames out of the stainless that we had salvaged. SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged 2012 Lagoon 450 Catamaran bought in Tortola, BVI at the beginning of 2018. Colin and his friend spent 4 months getting her seaworthy, before setting sail across the Caribbean. Follow our journey as we continue to fix her and eventually circumnavigate the globe! Now that we're back on land after a 1,200 mile passage, it's time to tackle all the things that weren't working while we were at sea. Remember on our passage when we'd try to cook meals in the oven, only to have the burner continuously go out on us? We'll now that the boat isn't constantly rocking back and forth, it's time to take it apart to see what's causing the problem. Maybe Matt will have it fixed in no time....or maybe we'll be eating sandwiches for the next week. We also rent a car for 2 days to explore what we can of County Cork. After getting some errands out of the way (checking in with immigration at City Hall; visiting marine stores; and many stops to Aldi), we get our hands on one more big chore...the 80 pounds of laundry we've had building up since Thailand. But then it's time for fun. We spend an evening walking through the streets of Cork, and the next afternoon going through the even cuter town of Kinsale. The highlight of our exploring is when we stop at an area called The Old Head. Staggering cliffs of a peninsula. This spot showcases thousands of birds on the cliffs and in the water; forts dating back to the 3rd century; and is even the site of the sinking of the Luisitania in 1915. Join the adventure of WE, as we welcome our family aboard in Puerto Rico. We sail the short 22 nautical miles from St. Thomas to Culebra and check in with immigration. From here we make our way to mainland and stock up and pick up the family for a 2 week adventure around the islands of Puerto Rico. Just before we pick up everyone we witness a boating accident that luckily was not worse from what it sounded like. We quickly ran to the scene of the accident to asses the situation. With nothing we really could do, we left the rest up to SeaTow and the Coast Guard. We later set sail to the largest southern island of Vieques. Visit the bio (because I'm not going to spell the whole word) bay and visit the small village to kick it all off. From here we sail to the small but incredible island of Culabrita. Here we practically have the place all to ourselves, anchored off in the turquoise bay, snorkel, hike to the old abandoned lighthouse, and soak in the natural baths that churn sea bubbles from the coastal break. [Em PORTUGUES abaixo] This is it! Our month long sailing adventure is nearing an end... if only we can make it safely home. We unleash the ocean wings for maximum speed, but some wings are not meant for flying, and we soon regret it! The final destination is our home port of Sydney, so sail and salsa with us as we tear down the home straight! PT: Eh isso! Nosso um mes de aventura velejando esta chegando ao fim. Soh falta voltar pra casa são e salvo. Nos abrimos nossas asas (modo de velejar q em ingles eh chamado gull wing, ou asas de passaro, não sei o nome em Português, desculpa!) mas logo descobrimos que asas abertas com vento aumentando e a noite começando não combinam! Saimos de Coffs Harbour e paramos em Port Stephens por uma noite pra descansar e seguimos pra Pittwater em Sydney, nosso porto. Na travessia com o clima bom rolou ate dancinha. Mas de volta em Sydney o corpo voltou ao trabalho e a rotina, mas a mente ficou a imaginar e planejar uma próxima aventura... jaja vem ai os videos!
