We begin the huge list of jobs that we need to get done in preparation for heading north to Fiji in May. We replace our old anchor chain, fit a new windlass, sand and polish the props, change engine filters, and even manage to squeeze in Christmas celebrations. Before we know it we are in 2019. How did we turn our sailing yacht into a canal boat for our journey through the french canals? This week we demonstrate the process of preparing our Southerly 38 for the french canals. We had to build a frame for transporting the mast, take down the boom, sails and wind generator, and make everything ready for unstepping the mast on the Mediterranean side of France, in preparation for entering the Canal du Midi. Bagan is a FASCINATING small town in central Myanmar (Burma). It is a place not to be missed. Named as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this 26 square mile plain is covered in ancient temples, pagodas, and stupas. They are literally found in every direction you look! Grab an e-bike and get lost! Travel down narrow, sandy paths and discover covered relics. Go into the temples (take off your shoes and socks and prepare for a painful walk on pebbled cement!) look at the Buddhas, ancient paintings, etc. It's a walk back in time to the 11th-13th Century. Sadly, earthquakes and resulting fires consumed all of the structures creating in wood. The remaining 2200 temples (of 10,000) are in the process of being preserved, though some are in really bad shape. Your tourism helps maintain the temples and the incredible history! Don't miss the cattle drives just before sunset and the sunset from the "highest" point in Bagan! It's truly a sight not to be missed...the sun setting over the the Irrawaddy River and behind all the steeples of the pagodas. Last year we had a great time with the Atalante 1 crossing the Atlantic, cruising the Caribbean and New England states and finally sailing all the way down the western Greenland coast. We carry on across France towards Antibes passing through the Loire Valley and the amazing Gorges Du Verdon. We’ve pulled the kids from school and are home schooling while on the road and the water. We spend time aboard our 34ft sailing boat in NZ and have bought a motorhome in Europe so as to tour the other side of the world. We’re keeping our memories on video here and the kids write narration and play guitars so we have music to use in the videos.

Our next stop is Waterford, Ireland...a town only 60 miles away. We start the day out with sunshine, but also with headaches thanks to an amazing family that brought us in the night before, made us pizza for dinner and gave us too much wine. When our pounding heads did leave, the sun and wind started to as well. Our goal of making it to an anchorage at the river entrance before nightfall was quickly disappearing. Just as the sky was losing light, it was time to put the engine on to get ourselves the last six miles to the river entrance.....and then another six miles UP the river when we found we couldn't anchor where we originally thought. But soon enough we were tied up to the docks in the heart of Waterford, ready to get some electric heat pumping through our boat and explore this city rich in Viking history. Much love from Ireland! In part four of this series I make build a jig and attach the frames, stem, and transom of my Snipe class, one design sailboat. I detail the construction of a sturdy boat building jig and how to layout the station locations. I also show how to align and attach each frame as well as installing the stem and attaching it to the first station frame. Finally, I detail how to rough cut the transom bevels and mount the raked transom on the jig in the correct location.
