I attempt some sewing repairs before heading around the west side of Molokai. Along the way I struggle with light winds and a 15 mile passage takes 10 hours. Entering the harbor at night I can hear big breaking waves on either side of me as a weave through the reef. Inside the harbor winds pick up at night and my anchor drags, putting me dangerously close to shore.

We have been sailing offshore for 2 years now and have lived on our boat for 3 with our dog. We are often asked many questions about Marley and hopefully this answers the difficult ones like, Where does he wee and poo? Doesn't that dog need lots of exercise? Why is he so skinny? We take you through a bit of day in the life of Marley and what we do to keep him happy and safe whilst we are sailing. It is a big decision to sail offshore and visit other countries with your dog or pet and we plan to break down the information and inform you more about our choices and why we brought Marley along for the ride! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia and finally arrived to the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the next big adventure. The work is now complete and off we go to Thailand on our way to Indonesia. We departed Australia in July 2017 and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! We made our way from Syracuse up to Taormina! A beautiful city propped up on a mountain in Sicily, we anchored just below it in a large bay. We spent an entire day around Naxos and then made the trek up the mountain to Taormina, it was such a hot day and we took the LONG way up!! Totally worth the effort though as it was an unbelievably beautiful city. After a few days of beautiful weather a storm hit! There wasn't anywhere near that was protectected that we could move to so we just had to ride it out! it was a very uncomfortable few days to say the least! on the last morning it all became too much with the swell and we decided to just move down a little bit in hopes for some relief. With the help of our friends on Katmazu we managed to refill our water tanks after they had gone dry! In all of our travels we have never seen so many fishing boats as in the Philippines. Not big ones. Just small outrigger style canoes that typically hold two to four people. It’s pretty neat. As soon as they start the engine the propeller starts spinning. No clutch. No gearbox. Just an engine directly hooked up to a little gas engine. With these contraptions they venture 50+ miles offshore as the sun sets and start up their lamps. We never did quite figure out exactly what species they were after but I’m sure anything would do. Sailing Coco After leaving Kev & Tina in Olbia - Sardinia we head across the Tyrrhenian Sea..... Rome bound. We have great winds across the entire crossing which made it a dream. Just before the sunset we were again visited by dolphins which is always a well received sight. We settle in for the night and wake up to a welcoming site of mainland Italy. We decide to take a cheeky trip to Rome and explore the sites. We get bombarded by men trying to sell us everything from umbrellas to warm bottles of water. The new Atlantic 72 catamaran is a comfortable cruising and charter platform with great performance. All carbon construction by Aquidneck Custom Composites. Five double cabins, each with head and shower, plus crew cabin. Twin 110 HP shaft drive Volvo engines yield a comfortable 12 kts. under power. Easy sailing speeds in excess of 15 knots.

In 1995 I had the opportunity to sail the original HAMMERHEAD 54 trimaran from S. Dartmouth, Massachusetts to Nantucket island with Bill Shuman her owner/builder and crew Joan Welsh. Conditions were good for the trip, although more wind would have made it faster. Elapsed time was 3 hours and a few minutes. While the point to point distance is 42 n.m. there was current against us all the way which varied from one knot in Buzzards Bay to 2 knots in Vineyard Sound. Add in a detour around a shoal and a dog-leg through Wood’s Hole the distance sailed runs about 46 n. miles. I’ve done this trip about 50 times in JUNIPER, my own 52’ trimaran, never making better than 3 h 25 min. So 3 hours and 8 minutes was very good for our first try in Hammerhead. The video tape, as you will immediately be able to tell, is un-edited and includes a close up of my hairy leg. Please feel free to fast forward!!!!
