That is the explanation to such an ingredient variety, but always with pears. In the Murcia region, traditional cuisine is a popular dish prepared by families with what was available at the time or what their economy permitted. The main thing to remember about making “olla gitana” is the fact that it should be full of different vegetables. The dish was originally developed in Cartagena (Murcia region) and a southern Spain. We hit a bridge!. We have a 60ft tall mast (plus 1ft for instrumentation), and the bridges are 65ft. So normally we don't have to think twice. The tide was exceptionally high and the bridge was reading 62.5ft. So we shoulda been fine, close, but fine. But this bridge had some netting on it for construction and some of it must have been drooping low enough to grab our wind instruments and tear them off! Scared the crap out of all of us. With all the negativity in the world, it is pretty easy to make someone smile! https://www.sailingnandji.com/ In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are still at the island of Simeulue off the west coast of Sumatra. this sleepy laid back island is as close to a free range farm as you can get! With limited protected anchorages along this coast line, we explore the island by land. We hire a scooter and dodge all the farm animals and their land mines, as we take the hog down some jungle tracks looking for waves. It is pretty easy to make a stranger smile. We have an old surfboard we wish to give away and we head down the beach in search of some grommets to pass it on to. It was actually harder to do then it sounds! But we perceiver and one lucky lad is the proud new owner of a surfboard!! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra where we are living the island life and chasing the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we are returning to Thailand in the coming months and then taking the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! The adventure is just beginning! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! It starts out a perfect day with not a ripple on the water so I use the opportunity to pretend I have a breakdown and try to steer the boat with the dinghy by myself. Not too hard at all really. The next day it starts to cloud up and I go for a quick spear to get dinner before I get hit...well my timing was a little off and I seek shelter behind an island, albeit the wrong side, that is the windward side. I wasn't going to stop on the sheltered side because that's where the 3 meter croc lives. I just need a spot to lay low and allow the lightning to strike the higher trees while I am lying as low as possible in the water. It all turns out OK even though we appear to have a strike very close by. And our favorite time is upon us once again, that's right people, it's croc watch. Had it not been for the large barge that needed to got up the river to drop stone at a building site we would never have had to pull our stern in out of the river to make room, we would never have been asked to tie on to the small boat by the shore and we would never have had to save them from floating off in to oblivion. In 1997, after a disastrous Olympic rowing campaign, Rob decided to row a seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014, we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with our three children, Finn 17, Declan 15 and Ivan 12, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world, meet the locals and record our adventures. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978.
