Teil 2 der Dokutainment Trilogie „Die Route der Wikinger“ führt dabei tief hinein in die spektakuläre Welt der sommerlichen Stockholmer Schären, macht Station in der alten Wikingersiedlung Birka im Mälarensee und endet auf den Åland-Inseln. Der Film zeigt neben der eigentlichen Reise auch wieder die Emotionen meiner langen Auszeit und beleuchtet auch wieder verstärkt die geniale Navigation und sagenhafte Mythologie der Wikinger. Im dänischen Nationalarchiv in Kopenhagen wird die Beschreibung eines alten Seeweges durch die Schären wie ein Schatz gehütet. Das von Mönchen handgeschriebene lateinische Dokument ist eine der ältesten und aufregendsten Quellen zur Navigation auf der Ostsee. Es besteht aus einer Auflistung von Orten, die zusammen eine – meist durch die Schären geschützte – Seeroute von Dänemark entlang der Ostseeküste Schwedens über die Ålands und Süd-Finnland bis nach Tallinn bildet. Diese vergessene Segelroute, mein 40 Jahre altes Segelboot LA MER und ein Kajak waren die Zutaten meiner neuen Ostsee-Abenteuerreise durch die Schärengebiete Skandinaviens. Mit dabei waren Kameras und Drohne, um die Reise in einer aufwendig produzierten Dokutainment-Trilogie auf die Leinwand zu bringen. Mit Unterstützung des Dänischen Nationalarchivs und mehrerer Museen konnte ich die Koordinaten des Itinerars in meine modernen Seekarten übertragen. Man kann davon ausgehen, dass die historischen Seewege der Region - so auch die der Wikinger- ebenfalls entlang dieser uralten Segelroute verliefen. So erstehen die Seemannschaft der Wikinger, die Geschichte ihrer Navigation - zu denen ich auch Experten befragte- und ihre vergessene Mythologie in meinen Reiseberichten wieder auf. The ILIKÉ was built on Sulawesi in Bira in 2010 in the traditional Indonesian way. The hull is made of ironwood and the body is teak. MSY Ilike hosts a total of 14 guests in 7 cabins that are fully air-conditioned with ensuite bathroom with hot water shower, toilet and sink. Indonesian and International meals will be served in the spacious saloon with open kitchen, or in the outdoor sitting area at the stern of the boat, well protected from wind while sailing. The comfortable dive deck in front of the boat is one of the most spacious on Indonesian liveaboards. As a diver you can choose to dive on Air or Nitrox from our membrane Nitrox compressor. Between dives you are invited to catch some sun on our sun deck, where you will also enjoy spectacular sunsets, sipping a cool drink! This is my first time back to the Valiant 40 since the sea trial. My friend, Patrick, and I fly down to La Paz, BCS, Mexico for a mini shakedown cruise to further inspect and test the Valiant 40. After a slow sail from the top of Taveuni Island, we arrive in Vanua Balavu in the northern Lau group. This is the first time that we offer our Sevusevu in a ceremony to the chief of the local village. The Ceremony - Significant and ancient in Fiji, the “sevusevu” also marks the time and place for visitors to seek acceptance into a Fijian village. A bundle of Yaqona or Kava is appropriate offering When you arrive at a village, you should ask for the ‘Turaga ni Koro’ who is the appointed village headman. It is his duty to greet you and ascertain your intentions before presenting you and your gift to his chiefs and village elder. Everyone participating in the ceremony should be dressed accordingly in a sulu. Women are also expected to have their shoulders covered and items like hats and sunglasses should be removed from your head. You will be shown to the Chiefs house or Village hall and sit a woven mat on the floor. Men should sit cross-legged (ensuring the sulu covers your knees) while women sit with knees and feet together, resting on the floor to whichever side is most comfortable. Silence at this point is the key. The Turaga ni Koro will approach the Chief on his knees to place your bundle of yaqona in front of him, staying low as he does so. He will cobo three times, which in Fijian culture means, “I am about to speak, thank you for listening while I do”. He will then begin reciting the traditional monologue, which differs slightly throughout Fiji, but essentially means the same thing. This will end with a chant, coupled with three more cobos that indicate they have completed their introduction. The Chiefs ‘herald’ – or second in command, will officially accept the yaqona on behalf of the chief with three cobos to announce the beginning and end of his speech. In a formal yaqona ceremony, authority is given by the village spokesman to begin mixing the yaqona. In this instance we usually just handed over our Kava. Once done, we are given permission to spend time exploring Daliconi village and its surrounds. We take the local bus across the island and manage to score some fresh provisions and briefly hook in to some data before heading back across the island. We continue our journey through the shallow channels of the Brisbane area and Moreton Bay. It’s a bit scary going under our first power line and not knowing if Nutshell will actually fit! But before checking into Malaysia’s southernmost Port of Entry at Pengileh, we had to cross the Singapore Strait. Billed as the ‘busiest shipping lane in the world’ (although those of us who have sailed across the English Channel might disagree) we weren’t looking forward to dodging between the behemoths in this narrow channel. Those bulk carriers, containers, tankers and passenger ships push through in fast and relentless caravans from east to west and west to east. We were heading south to north. In addition to the motorway traffic, tugs and barges slowly skirt the edges of the lanes at their own angle, while ferries cross-cross the waters between Sumatra, Singapore and the Malaysian peninsular. And then there are the tiny Indonesian fishing skiffs which sit in the slim buffer zone between channels. To make this a smooth operation, you need to use every navigation system at your disposal. We rely on AIS, radar, Navionics, binoculars and the most important resource of all: Mark One Eyeball. Don't forget to follow the boat!
