The longest passage possible without the option of heading to a safe haven. The Islands are fascinating, the snorkelling and diving probably the best in the world and the Polynesian life style to be envied. I tell everyone that as we approached Tahiti anchorage naked Polynesian girls swam out to us wearing a flower behind their ears and and welcoming smile. The truth is I chatted to air traffic control tower on VHF to get permission to pass the end of the runway so our mast did not endanger the jet passenger planes arriving and departing. Tahiti is very french with dual carriageways, supermarkets and wonderful beaches. The night market restaurants are inexpensive and fun as is the covered main market. I made some good friends there who lent me a car to explore in and have had a wonderful time in this city. Probably the place to have a second home in. Bit of a culture shock after The Marquesas and Tuamotu islands.. All is not lost as after the tourist flesh pots of Bora Bora the wonderful Cook Islands await with real uninhabited islands as well as Tonga and Fiji. Herby gives a lesson on how we get our weather information while out at sea. He does this with no computer, no internet connection, and most of all, no gizmo that you have to buy! He gets our weather information from his "Weather Eye". Herby tells you how to look at the clouds to see what winds you will be granted based on the shape and formation of the clouds. Clouds are just water vapor floating around in the atmosphere, and the clouds movement will tell you what is going on in the atmosphere (more importantly for you, what is going to happen at the surface) and what winds will be coming your way! This is all important information when you are sailing because the wind is your fuel. Too much or too little are bad things for a passage-making sailboat. Having the right amount of wind in the right direction is crucial in getting you to your destination in a timely manner. Sure, you could use something like PredictWind with an Iridium connection, but that is expensive and not always accurate. Looking at the sky to read the clouds is free and very accurate because it is the weather that you will be experiencing locally. Sailing fast to destination is nice! We depart St Lucia with 22kts wind for a quick sail to Le Marin, Martinique where we trouble shoot a bilge alarm problem. Once in a marina, we always connect to dock water that goes directly to our faucets (not into the tanks). The high water pressure can create problems. But for the first time we bothered by a bilge alarm at night - always the middle of the night! Once again, Pierre solves a boat mystery and we can sleep peacefully with high pressure dock water connected to the boat. Lastly, some clips on using a second anchor when high winds are predicted.

In conditions where boat speed is faster than wave speed, we’re often looking for opportunities to overtake waves. Here are 3 useful methods to execute this: 1. By the lee to the wave direction 2. Hunt for wave intersections 3. Follow skewed waves 1. In most conditions sailing by the lee gives us a lot of speed, depth, and options. Once it’s possible to overtake waves we want to find the lower spots and jump over them with plenty of speed. VMG by the lee is rarely poor, so briefly gaining some speed and rig force can be useful before attempting to climb over a targeted section of water. 2. Waves are beautiful examples of asymmetry in nature. There are often multiple wave directions, heights, widths, speeds, and distances. Waves are always changing shape and bouncing off of one another. This allows us to find lower spots in places where 2 different directions or sized waves intersect. Multiple quick transitions usually allow us to step in front. Single direction changes rarely gain the advantage of overtaking a wave; as often you will end up in the same wave or set behind. Be quick with body movements to transition the boat quickly through these low spots. 3. Waves can change direction very quickly. As a default try to follow wave direction. This will ensure high speeds at all times which is paramount to overtaking. When allowed to go faster than the wave attempt to move laterally looking for places to overtake. If the wave is very skewed from its normal direction, consider taking the “surfer’s wave” back towards the original wave’s direction. As the original wave re-forms, you have effectively hopped ahead without having to climb anything. Think of the game “Snakes and Ladders” and the ladders being the skewed waves helping you advance up the board. Learn more techniques like these ones and more at an ISA clinic

This week we do something I didn't think I would ever go in my life. We went over 100 feet below the surface (112 to be exact) in a submarine. I knew at some point I would be underwater and always assumed it would be via scuba as Deb and I started cruising. With those plans a bit on hold with the Grandsquids, I think we may still do that locally, and get certified to scuba, however this was in a pressurized 64 passenger sub. How Freaking cool!!! We boarded a boat that took us out to the Sub just off the coast of Waikiki Oahu Hawaii. On Passage from Mahon in the Balearics to south Sardinia Louise and I in Paw Paw our Westerly Ocean 43 we were visited by a school of dolphins for about 5 minutes, I got my video camera out and this video is all one shot and in fact they stayed even after I stopped shooting.. There are many boats that film their passage through the Panama Canal so before I went through in Bambola Quatre, my Moody 36 I loaned my crew to my friends in Pax, as line handlers, (you must have 4 plus helms person) and went as a passenger with my video camera. Every passage through the locks and across the lake is different and it is a risk, Two weeks before the transit one yacht was sunk and two dis-masted when the mooring lines of the tug they were tied alongside broke! Having transited the Panama Canal, visited Panama City for duty free stores and toys you start on your first passage on the wide, blue Pacific Ocean... And cross the Equator for the first time if you have started in Europe on your voyage. The Galapagos are a major tourist destination and pretty restrictive in terms of where visiting yachts may anchor. However it is a wonderful and special set of anchorages and islands and a place to catch you breath before the 3,000 mile passage to the Marquesa Islands... If you can ride a bit almost all the inhabited Pacific islands have the descendants of the ponies left there by the Spanish Conquistadors. With a guide you can mount up and visit the most amazing parts of the islands inaccessible by any other means. (do not expect crash hats or even both stirrups. TIP. In Bambola we sailed north from Sydney where it was raining a lot, towards Brisbane and anchored in the lagoon of a coral island called Lady Musgrave's Island. After a couple of days a blow was forecast so I moved Bambola towards the centre of the lagoon and laid out every foot of anchor chain I had in the 10 metre deep water over coral sand. That night it blew 60 knots with waves coming over the reef. Two yachts dragged their anchors and were driven onto the reef. I called the Australian coastguard as did an Australien yacht anchored near me and a helicopter was dispatched to pick up the crews before the boats were driven over the coral reefs into deep water and sank...
