Sometimes sister luck parks itself right next to your boat and opportunity knocks. We are in Tarrafal on Santiago Island and Dutch schooner Oosterschelde weigh anchor besides us. I'd met the Captain in a few days ago in Mindelo, and as he passed by with his dinghy waved him over. He stopped and was surprised to see me. He thought I was a bar sailor. I asked him if we could visit his boat, and thats what we did . We later visited Sub Saharan Africa's oldest town, Side Velha with Carlos and friends. Core Sound 20 'Dawn Patrol' starts her fifth Everglades Challenge and tries to stay ahead of the EC-22 which was chartered. This year the event was prematurely cancelled by the CG. Some still went on to have a vacation down the coast. The start of the race in 2015 featured some rough conditions and a few boats capsized. Reports of capsized boats in Tampa bay prompted a CG response and when they saw the magnitude of boats in the bay and more than a handful seemed to be struggling they realized there was an event taking place and told us to cancel the event. Before this year, a permit for the event was not thought to be needed but afterward the CG have asked us to get a permit. The only conditions of the permit thus far have been that we do not launch if there is a small craft advisory for the area and that we have a certain number of support boats in the water at the start to help anyone who may flip in the navigation channel (a major channel). Both very reasonable. I would classify the CG feeling toward the water-tribe in general as "very positive". We like the CG and they like us because we are in general a very prepared and skilled group.

Als wir den Hafen Vitte auf Hiddensee besucht haben, sahen wir ein Segelschiff, welches auf Grund gelaufen ist. Die Crew versuchte, sich mittels Motor- und Segelunterstützung alleine herauszumanövrieren. Leider erfolglos. So riefen wir die DGzRS, die Seenotretter an und diese befreiten die Yacht. When we visited the port of Vitte on Hiddensee, we saw a sailing ship which ran aground. The crew tried to manoeuvre itself out by itself using motor and sail support. Unfortunately unsuccessfully. So we called the SAR, sea rescuers and they freed the yacht.

Der Unterschied 1 Watt/25 Watt in der Sendeleistung verändert nicht die Lautstärke des Gesprochenen beim Empfänger. Die Techniker wiesen aber darauf hin, dass eine auf 25 Watt Sendeleistung eingestellte Anlage, die räumlich sehr nahe zum Empfänger ist (z.B. Vor einer Schleuse oder Hafenmeister, Boot in unmittelbarer Nähe) dazu führen kann, dass dieser nicht mehr den gesprochenen Text, sondern nur noch ein lautes Rauschsignal hört, weil der Empfänger mit der sehr nahen, sehr starken Aussendung überfordert ist.

We cross from France to England, then visit Dover and some towns in Kent while prepping our motorhome for shipping back to NZ. We’ve pulled the kids from school and are home schooling while on the road and the water. We spend time aboard our 34ft sailing boat in NZ and have bought a motorhome in Europe so as to tour the other side of the world. We’re keeping our memories on video here and the kids write narration and play guitars so we have music to use in the videos.
