Jo has been managing a shoulder injury and having failed to find anyone to put it right in Fiji, we decide our only option is to head back to Auckland to get it treated. While there , we visit family, shop for food and boat spares and fit in a sneaky visit to the NZ Boat Show. After a crazy busy week, we head back to Fiji and wait for a decent weather window to travel across the bottom of Viti Levu and up the eastern coast. We spend our time restocking the larder and making good use of the marina facilities. We crack through some boat jobs and give DT a damn good clean. Once our weather window comes up we head out and have a fabulous downwind sail 72nm to Momi Bay on the east coast. It's been fun sailing the Northern Latitudes, but now we want to warm up!! Finding VERY cheap airfare from London to the Canary Islands, we say goodbye to boat life for a few weeks as we enjoy all the spoils the island of Tenerife has to offer. Instead of flying back to Michigan, and snow, to see some family members, we bring them out to us for their first taste of Europe and life in the islands. While Matt's mom and step-dad are joining us for a week in our one bedroom apartment, we take in some of the highlights of this desert like island - including its black sand beaches, colonial Spanish towns, and miles of stunning coastline. We wanted to test out our new GoPro Hero8, and gave it a test on a few of our outings, solely using this camera to record our Real Time Update. A proper episode will follow sequentially where we hopefully hike the forests of the north, enjoy an authentic Guachinche meal, and *possibly* meet up with a few sailors headed our way. Our second season of sailing has commenced and we couldn't have been more thrilled to be back on the water and back in Belize. The rolling of the seas, the sounds of sloshing water against the hull, the salty gritty feeling on your skin after snorkeling was exactly what we were waiting for. We sail out of the river of Guatemala and return to the Belizian waters. This time we encounter just a few minor boat issues to boot. Nothing again that will alter our excitement of returning to the salty sea. We discover pretty immediately that our autopilot was all out of wack, about 30 degrees out of wack to be exact. First, the windlass crapped out and now the autopilot has taken up a new direction. Our first anchorage was a cluster of islands off the southern Belizean Barrier reef called Sapodillo Cayes. We come across a perfect oasis island called Ranguana Caye and spend a few days soaking it all in. Swimming, diving, fishing and boat projects. When executed properly, spinnaker takedowns are arguably the most satisfying and most fun maneuvers to be part of. When they are done properly, they’re great. When they go left on you, however, a bad douse can create chaos on the bow as well as cost you time or damage the sail. Here’s some video of two well-executed yet totally different spinnaker douses captured by Lindsay Preece during the Pot of Gold regatta off Fremantle, Western Australia. The wind is in the mid-teens, the water’s flat, and the boats aren’t overlapped so they could use whichever spinnaker drop techniques they wanted. One chose a string drop using a retrieval line, the other a letterbox. In this video you will see these two techniques compared and contrasted. While the Letterbox is the safest spinnaker takedown method for ocean racing, it is not the quickest. This video details the methods of a "String" or "Belly Button" takedown, which is a very quick method for buoy racing. Other techniques that work well for short course races are the "Mexican" or "jibe-drop" and the leeward stretch and blow. Oh yes, once you get a grand prix racer with coffee grinder pedistals you can grind the spinnaker down in 3-5 seconds. But that's something totally different.

Meet the 2019 Best of Boats Award winner and the newest addition to the Frauscher range: The Frauscher 1414 Demon Air. The silhouette of the Frauscher 1414 Demon Air combines the typical design notes of the Frauscher shipyard - especially the flat bow with it´s vertical stem, the Z-shaped sideline and the frameless windscreen. Due to a freestanding centre helm the Air variant offers more space and comfort than any other Frauscher yacht before. On deck, the 14 metre long offshorer has a welcoming lounge area with a bar and a spacious bathing platform. Inside the yacht there is a large seating area with a kitchenette, a bathroom and a cabin in which up to four people can stay overnight. All these features turn the 1414 Demon Air into a highly functional Gentlemen´s Racer for both, day and weekend trips. The Frauscher 1414 Demon Air differs in two main features not only from other Frauscher models, but also from its competitors: The most striking feature is the dynamic all-carbon sunroof, which can be withdrawn sideways out of the hull and shadows the rear cockpit surface. Made of visible carbon fiber and a weight of only 150 kilo, the sunshade becomes a design object. Together with the side air intakes and the hinged pillars for the sunroof in the front seating area, which are also designed in carbon fiber, Frauscher impressively underlines the competence in dealing with this particularly light and stable material. In addition to sun protection, the sunroof also integrates speakers for a even better hi-fi sound onboard and dimmable LED lighting. Another highlight is the automatically retractable table in the front lounge area. Unlike other boats, the large teak table not only lowers at the seat cushion level to create a huge sun and visually protected sunbed, but also disappears completely into the cockpit floor to maximize the sense of freedom on the 1414 Demon Air. With the 1414 Demon Air, the Frauscher Bootswerft demonstrates once again the expertise it has built up over the past 90 years of company history. This is reflected not only in the design of the yacht, but also in the quality of the craftmanship and the materials used. It was only in February that Michael Frauscher, managing director responsible for production and development, received the German Design Award 2018 for the closed model - the 1414 Demon. The 880 PS strong 1414 Demon Air, as well as all other Frauscher boats, is carefully handcrafted in the shipyard in Ohlsdorf, Austria. This enables the shipyard to offer its customers a maximum of individualisation - starting with the colour of the hull, through the materials used, the high-end audio system and the engine.
