In this episode we take the risky sail from Cayman Islands, to Panama, through the pirate waters off the coast of Honduras and Nicaragua. Friends of ours have even been chased here, but scared them off with their gun. We do not carry arms so took a more conservative approach of keeping a distance of 120 miles off the coast, however still saw fishing boats, which are essentially what the pirates are, opportunist fishermen... SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged 2012 Lagoon 450 Catamaran bought in Tortola, BVI at the beginning of 2018. Putting out this video was painful, but necessary as a warning of potential job loss as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. I mean, what could possibly go worse after being told by your employer to come back to China in order to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine? Your employer then telling you on day 8 of quarantine that you no longer have a job even though you have over a year left on your work contract! What's worse is that the same thing could happen to my job without notice and then once we've lost our jobs, then you lose your work visa and have to leave the country you have grown to love over the past four years. Let's face it, China's economy was weak going into the beginning of 2020 and now as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, millions have lost their job as a result of quarantine and offices and factories shutting down and people no longer being able to meet in public places. But a similar thing is happening in the rest of the world and we hope this does not happen to you, but be prepared because it very well could. He told us that he's heading for Djibouti... That makes us exited, is Djibouti open again?? On the 17th of April 2020 we will leave marina Port Ghalib in Egypt, heading south towards Sudan and Djibouti and finally Maldives. We will take it easy, enjoy the beautiful reefs of the red sea and keep an eye on the corona regulations of the ports we pass. Since many countries are closed we don't know where we will be allowed to go on land again, but we can survive 4 month without seeing anybody :) This journey is only a small part of our trip that started 2 years ago. We got the sailing- skills on our friends yacht 'Shalom' when we joined them on a trip from the Netherlands to Spain. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtDOpi7ydzdcRK1H7fEiQFQ . In Spain we decided to go with our own boat, and in no time we were the happy owners of 'Messenger'. We left may 2018 and started vlogging from the beginning, we made 15 minute video's of our adventures, the nature and the many special people we met. We cooperated with OM to visit their projects and film them on our way. Since 19 of March we started with a daily vlog due to the corona situation. We plan to keep doing this the coming months. In this Podcast episode I describe fixing the mainsail on Spartan and deciding to go 'hell for leather' from now on in the Velux 5 Oceans Race. I describe what it was like to find the will to carry on when I was already so completely exhausted and how that has become a very beneficial lesson in my life. In the 'Questions & Tangents' section I answer a question sent to me via Instagram asking 'What was a never ending puzzle I had to deal with as I sailed around the world?' Great question and I hope the answer is long enough and rambling enough for you! I go on to outline the Ocean Global Race that Spartan will be entering in 2023- this will be an event that is open to everyone however participants will need to be aware of the dollar cost of being part of such a crew and the need for proper training both practical and theoretical. Lastly I announce the new Spartan On-line Seamanship Training we are releasing in April- this will provide a three tier training system that should push past where RYA training (or similar) takes you and provides you with a structured system that will give you new confidence and ability when offshore. Individual units will begin at $200 dollars going up to packages that will also purchase an option to be on the Round the World team in 2023. More details on that coming soon.
