We all know that the nautical mile is a different length from the statute mile. But why is that? Where does this measurement come from, anyway? Jonathan joins Georgia in this video to explain, with a little bit of history and a sprinkle of navigation. This ASK US ANYTHING video is all about the namesake of our Raye Montague STEAM Initiative - the U.S. Navy's "hidden figure." Ms. Montague's legacy continues to inspire us to bring STEAM and maritime education to students at OHPRI by providing hands-on experiences related to ship design, construction and operation. Raye Jean Montague was an African-American naval engineer who served as the program director for the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Integrated Design, Manufacturing, and Maintenance Program, the division head for the Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) Program, and deputy program manager of the Navy's Information Systems Improvement Program. She created the first computer-generated ship design, the Oliver Hazard Perry Class Frigate, during the height of the Vietnam War in the early 1970s, using a computer program she developed, in less than 19 hours. The STEAM acronym stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. Previously known as STEM, without the Arts component, STEAM is a growing curriculum designed to integrate STEM into various relevant disciplines with the addition of the arts. Even though she's a sailing vessel, SSV Oliver Hazard Perry also needs her engines sometimes - and that means she uses propellers to move through the water. In this video, Georgia and the crew break down the inner workings of a ship's propeller system and some of the physics behind how it makes our ship go. If our electronics broke, how would we know how deep the water is under our ship? What's a sounding, and how do we do it manually? And what's a fathom, anyway? Georgia and Jackson, crew on the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry, take you behind the scenes as they explain how sailors have been finding water depth for thousands of years. Join Jen, OHPRI's Education Programs Manager, in this fun challenge to learn about simple machines and how our ship's windlass makes lifting things easier! Materials needed: - pencil/straw - paper towel tubes - tape - string/yarn - a yogurt container or some other small basket-like object - weights (try marbles, small rocks, candy) THINGS TO DISCUSS DURING THE LESSON - Is there a big difference between using the winch to lift the weights vs. lifting the weights without a winch? - What are some things in our everyday lives that are made easier by winches? - How would your life be harder without simple machines like winches? ?If you have ideas for videos you'd like to see, we want to hear from you!? ? email us at info @ ohpri.org
On May 29, 2020, students at Newport's Thompson Middle School tuned in to a webinar aboard SSV Oliver Hazard Perry. Along with Dan O'Connor, our program director, and our crew Miranda, Eric, and Jackson, students learned about about simple machines and mechanical advantage as the crew used a pulley system to lift and transfer a ship's liferaft from the deck to the dock. This video is a recording of the livestream from the ship and is provided courtesy of Taylor Rock, science teacher at Thompson Middle School. Thanks to all the students for joining us, and enjoy the video! Note: As this was a livestream directly from the ship, audio/video may at some points be choppy or cut out, but this didn't prevent any information from being shared during the class.
Ship's engineer Jackson Hruschka returns in the second part of our Construction Series. We've been assembling storage units in our forward Bosun's Stores, and in order to keep the project moving, there's a lot of sanding involved. Jackson introduces us to the wide world of sanding tools and surfaces, and explains how to use each one in the first part of our Sanding Series. Liked this? Join Jen, OHPRI's Education Programs Manager, in this fun challenge. We'll learn about the water cycle, which is how water turns into clouds, then rain or snow, then falls to the earth and replenishes our rivers and oceans before turning back into clouds! ??? Materials needed: - a small pot - permanent marker - a mug (preferably ceramic) with a handle - a sealable sandwich bag - tape or string to hang up your bag THINGS TO DISCUSS DURING THE LESSON - What are all the different forms that water can take? What are the forms that we see every day at home? - How does the water cycle help the earth? What would happen if we didn't have the water cycle? ?If you have ideas for videos you'd like to see, we want to hear from you!? ? email us at info @ ohpri.org
