The Pyramid: the sporting model for generations. A wide base of new participants narrows quickly, and only the elite competitors climb to the top of the pyramid. But what about everyone else? The pressure to climb the pyramid, at the expense of long-term participation and well-rounded skill development, has parents, instructors, and program leaders looking to US Sailing for guidance and a different approach. For the last month, we haven't really left our home except for when it really was necessary. It was getting hot in the valley and the bottom needed a good cleaning. We felt that "giving white shark a belly rub" was a good "social distancing" activity. It feels like it's getting easier each time. We took some advice from some professional hull cleaners and bought their favorite suction handles and brushes. Shaun had to tether every tool to help Brittany(and himself) hold onto to them. It was the first time we had a boat pass by and give us a wake to toss our tummies. We hope everyone else is keeping healthy and safe! We can't wait for things to get back to some sort of normalcy. Yess we are doing a GIVEAWAY!! Win a full week on board of Messenger for 2 persons. check the details in/under Vlog 25 It is time to move on! we have a perfect day of sailing on the Red Sea. A good, wind, and smooth sail. This is what you expect if you are talking about a nice sailing day:) On the 17th of April 2020 we left marina Port Ghalib in Egypt, heading south towards Sudan and Djibouti and finally Maldives. We will take it easy, enjoy the beautiful reefs of the red sea and keep an eye on the corona regulations of the ports we pass. Since many countries are closed we don't know where we will be allowed to go on land again, but we can survive 4 month without seeing anybody :) This journey is only a small part of our trip that started 2 years ago. We got the sailing- skills on our friends yacht 'Shalom' when we joined them on a trip from the Netherlands to Spain. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtDOpi7ydzdcRK1H7fEiQFQ . In Spain we decided to go with our own boat, and in no time we were the happy owners of 'Messenger'. We left may 2018 and started vlogging from the beginning, we made 15 minute video's of our adventures, the nature and the many special people we met. We cooperated with OM to visit their projects and film them on our way. Since 19 of March we started with a daily vlog due to the corona situation. We plan to keep doing this the coming months. The Leeward Mark Rounding is an important technique to master when rounding the gate marks in the Optimist Course. Especially in light air, when using too much rudder can put on the brakes and slow all your speed. To be the best leeward mark rounder, you need to master all three controls: the main sheet, rudder and body. Combining them together with the correct timing, you should be able to maintain your speed throughout the turn. Suggestions? Put them down below in the comments! Before any cruise - apparently you’re meant to check the key parts of your engine. I’ve only just learnt this, 4 months in, so I was the lucky one. Thankfully the neighbouring boats have helped me a lot to understand what in need to check.

Naturally on board a narrowboat there is tonnes of rust, here is just another one of those. I decided to move my wardrobe area to this thinner cupboard to save space. But when I opened the wood base I discovered where the rest of the toilet box was. And it wasn’t pretty !! Anyway - a little kurust and good as new !!

Video date: MARCH 2018. Firstly we’d like to say thanks for the lovely welcome back, the number of messages across all our social media was a huge surprise and makes the time spent editing all worth it. We hope everyone is happy, healthy and safe and that you continue to enjoy our adventure with us. (Video uploaded during the global quarantine). In this episode we navigate some very tricky, narrow and shallow entrances into and out of Harbor Island. You’ll defo want to talk to some locals or sailors that have done these passages before attempting yourself. Harbor Island is a very special little place. Some very nice hotels, stunning beaches and the locals are great. If we didn’t have deadlines to be in America then we would have stayed much longer. Much longer in the whole of the Bahamas to be fair. Much of the Bahamas is around 3m water depth so all navigation needs to be undertaken carefully. We got very lucky and managed to follow a super yacht out of the Harbor Island anchorage. “HOME” the super yacht we followed out was actually built as a shallow draft vessel just for the Bahamas! We are at the mercy of the wind (because we have very little fuel left and I didn’t want to pay Bahamas fuel prices when we are headed for the States. Unfortunately it wouldn’t blow us where we wanted and we ended up south of Bimini but that’s sailing! There was a very narrow cut thru the reefs that’s around 2m water depth so we launched the dinghy to test the way first. We made it. Next episode we cross the Gulf Stream and arrive in the US of A! Please leave a comment, a thumbs up and share to help us build up our channel again. If you guys enjoy and want more, we’ll keep making them for you. When applying Machine Learning to real world scenarios, you rarely have enough data available when you start learning. In this #openfika 'Tech Edition' we introduce Incremental Learning, which allows your algorithms to evolve while your data is collected. We give a brief overview of the incremental tools in the Ekkono toolbox, as well as some examples of real-world applications where Incremental Learning could be used. We also showcase our demo site - demo.ekkono.ai - where you can play around with our algorithms yourself. Check it out!

In this video we show you 10 BOAT HACKS that make our life aboard much easier. They are our TOP BOAT ESSENTIAL ITENS. After experimenting different accessories along these 4 years sailing and living aboard we found that these 10 are the ones we most use and would advise other cruisers to get. There are a lot of unnecessary gadgets that we fell temped to buy and in the end they just use space at the boat and get sucked inside a forgotten compartment that we never touch. That’s not what happens with the items we mentioned here, nowadays we try to be more straight forward and only get what really makes the difference. Our Indian Ocean departure is approaching fast, lets get Nandji ready for the task! https://www.sailingnandji.com/ This video was filmed early Febuary before the global pandemic really took off. Thailand was one of the first countries affected and we took the adequate precautions early to protect ourselves. In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we arrive back to Chalong bay on the south coast of Thailand to comlpete some more boat jobs to prepare our yacht to cross oceans. We only recently left the boat yard in Krabi and after a great down wind sail, we are back to Phuket where we can readily find everything we need to finish off the niggling jobs at anchor. Our departure date is approaching fast and we need to stock up on engine spares ready for the year of sailing that lied ahead. We cruise around Phuket on the scooter collecting the necessary items and complete some of those jobs off the list like painting the bilge in the V-berth, installing harness points and up grading the running rigging on the mainsail. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! The adventure is just beginning as we plan to sail our Nandji girl around the world!! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! Point being, things always change! Luckily when a hurricane started coming our way, we were quickly able to find protected waters in Grand Baie of Terre-de-Bas, Les Saintes, Guadeloupe until it passed by. In the meantime, we had the opportunity to explore these beautiful parts of the Guadeloupe archipelago and hike all across the island. These butterfly filled, flower covered islands are an impeccable place for any nature lovers who wants a little peace and quiet. Thanks for watching and please share if you enjoy. We hope to see you next time in Dominica, but until then, go have fun! Much love, Alex

In this episode, the reality of the situation begins to set in as we adapt to life on lockdown. After our brief shakeout sail around to St George just outside of Port Louis in Grenada we very quickly begin to feel that we may have made a poor choice for a place to spend our lockdown as the rolling swell began to get the better of us. To remedy this we decided to quickly deploy a stern anchor to swing the boat into the swell and ease the rolling. This turned into a mammoth three and a half-hour exercise with varying degrees of success. We ended up using a bridle on the main anchor to achieve the desired effect. Fortunately for us all, it worked quite well and we all managed to get some sleep. In an attempt to boost morale we hosted the first of what we hope will be many Millennial Falcon Poker tournaments. The following morning we received an unpleasant visit from the coast guard grilling us about our arrival dates. Khiara and Sean, kept busy by getting stuck into some boat jobs, specifically, re-bedding and sealing some windows with brutal tape which were long overdue. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it. Much love Carla and Simon

If the world had not been turned upside down by the spread of the Corona Virus this weekend would have been launch day for the 2020 sailing season. With no end to the lock down in sight we don't know when we will hit the water for our next sailing adventure. There is no point letting the Lock Down stop you from doing what you love, so, if you can't go sailing then we at bottom up boats say "Bring the sailing to you". With a little bit of planning and some spare parts from the garage we turned the boys backyard jungle gym into a racing ketch. A great afternoon of backyard sailing was had by all, not even the rain a the 1 minute mark could get me down. This video was brought to you by the team at Bottom Up Boats, from the backyard :) Music Brought to you from No Copyright Sounds. Halcyon & Starlyte - Escape With Me (feat.
