Lapstrake planking - Part two. In this episode we get into a traditional method of scarfing planks. This would only be used for solid wood and not for plywood. This method is intended for fastening the scarfs in place on the boat with tacks rather than glue. This is theoretically faster than fastening at the workbench and in a repetitive volume environment and I believe that to be true. In a nutshell, the primary difference is that we do not initially bring our outer scarf to a feather edge. Instead we leave 1/6”-1/8” of meat on it. Then reduce that edge to a feather by planing it back for a short distance from the outside. The purpose is twofold. First, it would be hard to get a flat feather edge to close up and secondly, it will tend to look a little flat. By changing the geometry of this feather edge we increase the pressure that the fastenings can exert on it and the shaping puts a slight curve into in the area of the scarf matching that of the outer surface of the plank. Now because of the width of these planks plus the amount of shape in the sides of the dory I chose to glue it up on the bench. By using this traditional scarfing method I was able to dress off the extra meat and get a nice sharp clean line where my scarf feathers out rather than the undefined line that is the usual result of a typical flat scarf. The other option I could have employed is using a hooked scarf, which I have done on other projects but that requires a good bit of additional time. Whilst Stephen has been furloughed from work we have been working on a number of jobs which have been requiring attention, since we purchased the boat in August last year. We plan to properly repaint the boat in the next year or so when funds allow. Painting the back deck at the moment was so we could have an outside space on the boat that we could enjoy in the summer, and hopefully be able entertain friends and family (once lockdown is fully lifted). We’re Stephen and Kayleigh an English/ Scottish couple and along with our two dogs Hugo and Coco we will full time on board our 37ft narrowboat Grayswood. After living nearly two years in our self-converted campervan we decided we needed more space. So, as a compromise (Ste wanted a boat, I was happy in the van) we decided we would purchase a boat after spending some time on our friend’s narrowboat. Grayswood was conveniently located less that 5 minutes from my work and was found kind of by accident. I was visiting a friend who was staying in Aston Marina and whilst we were out walking the dogs, I seen the advert for Grayswood. I said to my friend “that looks a nice boat” and as I said it the marina manager appeared and asked if we would like a look inside. Naturally we did. After looking inside, the boat I texted Ste and told him I’d found us a boat. We made an offer after going back for a second viewing, after some negotiations within a week she was ours pending a survey. She was hauled out the following week and the survey went well. We kept her out on the hard standing for a further six weeks whilst we renovated the insides including fitting a new kitchen and bathroom. Mientras tanto "Peque" ya puso a trabajar a alguien que le quitara el caracol y lo lijara... van a pintarlo, pulirle la propela y mandar a hacer otra de refacción,el timón hay que balancearlo y se tiene que cambiar el cable de la quilla... wow no sé de donde va a sacar tanto dinero "peque" pero ya dió el adelanto. Spreader wires - secure loose wires. Radar - troubleshoot and repair - keeps disconnecting while sailing. Compass light does not work - need replaced. Rigging tension - check and adjust. Halyard - replace with new Dyneema. Parasailor - additional rigging at helm. Main Sheet blocks - add backing plates and fix gel cracks Underwater lighting - replace and ensure tight seal. Antennaes - remove Iridium & Webwatch. relocate Sirius and AIS. In this week's episode, we are in the midst of week 3 of lockdown with no end in sight. We try to keep as busy as possible by knocking over some boat jobs, or at least those we could tackle with the supplies we have on board. We pulled down the roof lining to finally relocated our rather cumbersome liferaft to a place where it is less obtrusive and more easily deployed. During this job, we discover that Kiara is frightfully out of practice with her nautical jargon and in typical Millennial Falcon fashion - Hilarity and chaos ensues... Later that day Khiara takes a Kayak trip around the bay and I (Adam) rescue some fisherman caught in the offshore winds with timber for oars, who rewarded me with a portion of their fish! Which, in most parts of the world would only be considered as bait. Not wanting to be ungrateful or wasteful we made the best of the situation and sifted through the bones to find a decent fish dinner. SEASON 6 / The Haul Out : Episode #131 : Wrestlin' the PSS Shaft Seal into place On this episode we enter the MAD DASH phase of the haul out! What we don't mention in the video is that we were racing the clock to get the prop shaft and PSS installed before 1pm so we could splash before the ENTIRE YARD left for Christmas holiday!!!!! That would have meant Triteia was stuck on the hard until 2020. Very high stress day for me. And yes we did go with a PSS dripless shaft seal, and before all of the "apocalyptic" comments start coming in about "THOSE WILL SINK YOUR BOAT" Keep in mind that the UNITED STATES COAST GUARD has them on every single one of their boats. That is enough endorsement for me. Everything went fairly smooth, just hard because of the tight quarters, until we had to press the collar down the 3/4 of an inch to tighten it into place. The Boat Yard told us they have to use hydraulic presses on the pss seals for big boats. Camille saved the day by squeezing herself over the engine and safely compressing it while I tightened it down! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. A new class of boat, the Volvo Open 70 was introduced - a more radical yacht with a canting keel, which would cause some boats serious problems on the 31,000 nautical mile route around the world.⛵️🌎 This race is will also be remembered for the tragic loss of Hans Horrevoets aboard ABN AMRO TWO during Leg 7 from New York to Portsmouth. The young crew of the Dutch sponsored boat were then called upon to rescue their competitors aboard the stricken Movistar during the same leg. Movistar had suffered a catastrophic keel pivot failure, and skipper Bouwe Bekking made the difficult decision to abandon ship. All ten crew members then transferred by liferaft to the attending ABN AMRO TWO, still with the recovered body of Horrevoets stowed aboard. The race was won by ABN AMRO ONE, the sister boat of ABN AMRO TWO, skippered by New Zealander Mike Sanderson.
