We've been locked out of the boatyard and have no idea if we have to pay the yard bill while it's closed or when it will reopen. Four 100ft trimarans sailed by just two crew each around a 14,000mile figure of eight course in the North and South Atlantic Oceans. Each boat regularly cruised at over 30 knots and hit top speeds well in excess of 40knots. These are incredible, awesome, overpowered, understaffed beasts and the world's fastest offshore machines. Drone flight over the ancient Roman City of Salona. Salona was the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia and played an important role in both the early and late history of the Roman Empire. The Roman colony was founded by Julius Cesar in the 40's B.C., bearing the name Colonia Martia Ivlia Salona. It was populated by roman traders and veterans. The remains of a theatre and an amphitheatre mark Salona's status as a major urban centre in the early empire. One of the most important periods in history of the town was the reign of emperor Diocletianus (284 - 305) who had a majestic palace built in the immediate vicinity of Salona. It was in honour of the emperor, that Salona was names Valeria (after his family name). Urban life at Salona ceases by 640 AD with the invasions of the Avars and the Slavs. The urban population retreated behind the sturdy walls of nearby Diocletian's Palace or the offshore islands of the Adriatic. The 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race was won by Torben Grael and Ericsson 4 after 37,000 miles of hard-fought racing. Starting for the first time in Alicante, the new home of the race and finishing in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It was Grael’s second attempt at winning the coveted trophy, and to date his last appearance in the race. The 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race was also the first time each boat carried a dedicated Media Crew Member to record life onboard.📹📸 Elsewhere this race saw the debut of future winner Ian Walker, skippering Green Dragon, while Ken Read led a campaign for the first time aboard PUMA Ocean Racing. Sam Davies' first big adventure was as part of Tracy Edwards crew for the 1998 Jules Verne Record attempt. Ahead of the record, the catamaran Royal Sun Alliance was dismasted in the Southern Ocean. It took 16 days with no outside assistance to make landfall. In the 2008-09 Vendee Globe, Davies’ IMOCA 60 Roxy was the third to finish in just over 95 days - the only women to complete the race faster is Dame Ellen MacArthur. The 2012-13 Vendee Globe ended in sadness with her yacht Savéol dismasting in an Atlantic gale. Sam Davies was the skipper of Team SCA in the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race, the first all-female team for 10 years to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race and the first for 25 years to win a leg of the race. Sam Davies currently campaigns the IMOCA 60 Initiatives Coeur and has her eyes set on the next Vendee Globe. Sam was born into a seafaring family in Portsmouth, England. Her grandfather was a submarine commander. She took her first steps on her parents’ boat. Since 2012, Sam has lived in Brittany, France. We spent many hours dreaming of the Exumas when we were working on Calico Skies this past fall in Annapolis. With waters rumoured to be even more clear and beautiful than anywhere else in the Bahamas, exploring this new-to-us-territory was a tantalising fantasy that kept us going through many long days of boat projects. In this episode, we finally enter the turquoise waters of the Exumas as we make our way to Allan Cay. After a visit with the Iguanas (the most hysterical creatures!), we make our way to Staniel Cay to visit an incredible underwater cave called the Thunderbolt Grotto. And for those with a keen eye, in the previous couple of episodes you may have noticed the addition of some new equipment in the form of a windless (!!). We tackled so many boat projects this fall that we thought it might be more fun to sprinkle them in via flashbacks, so in this episode we show you the highlights of the install of our fantastic new upgrade (just ask Bill's back :)).
