🌊 포항 영일만의 첫 경험 지난 9월 12일부터 14일까지, 포항 영일대 해수욕장 앞바다에서 열린 세일링 시합에 다녀왔습니다. 전국 각지의 바다를 경험하는 것은 세일러의 큰 즐거움 중 하나인데, 이번 포항의 물결은 특히 강렬한 인상을 남겼습니다. 시합 첫날, 처음 두 경기를 마친 후 무풍이 되어 해상에서 바람을 기다리고 있었습니다. 그러다가, 눈 깜짝할 새 상황이 뒤바뀌었습니다. 갑자기 바다에서 거친 강풍이 몰아쳐 경기 수역을 덮쳤고, 결국 시합은 취소되었습니다. 그 거친 해풍의 변화를 미리 읽어낼 수 있다면 얼마나 좋을까, 하는 주제넘은 생각이 들었던 첫 날이었습니다. ⏳ 기다림 아쉽게도 다음 날은 종일 바람이 허락되지 않아 단 한 경기도 치르지 못하고 대회가 마무리되었습니다. 하지만 세일링에서 "기다림"은 경기의 일부입니다. 바람이 멎은 시간, 우리는 배를 점검하고, 동료 세일러들과 담소를 나누며 시간을 보냅니다. 이번 시합은 특히 경기하는 시간보다 배를 싣고 나르고, 이동하고, 바람을 기다린 시간이 훨씬 길었습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 그 모든 과정이 세일링의 일부임을 아는 세일러들은 그 시간을 기꺼이 즐겼습니다. 🚢 이번 포항 대회는 블라디보스토크-포항-상하이를 잇는 환동해컵 대회 기간 중, 참가 배들이 포항에 머무는 동안 열린 "이벤트 대회"였습니다. 비록 J70과 J24 클래스의 경기 운영은 다소 미흡했지만, 전국에서 모인 같은 클래스의 세일러들과 반가운 얼굴들을 만날 수 있는 자리여서 그 자체로 의미 있고 즐거운 시간이었습니다. 예측할 수 없는 자연 앞에서 겸손함을 배우고, 같은 것을 바라보는 동료들과 함께 시간을 보내는 것, 이것은 세일링이 주는 매력 중 하나입니다. 곧 다가올 다음 시합에서는 자연이 우리에게 바다에서의 시간을 부디 허락해 주기를 기대합니다.

We are extending our wheelhouse so that we can have a full cockpit enclosure AND move the mainsheet from the top of the aft cabin to above the wheelhouse (better safety and a better sheeting angle). This is the first prototype frame (will extend to the full cockpit width) so that Jane can start making the rest of the soft enclosure. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. Our grand plan was a west-to-east crossing of the Atlantic, and we set sail with high hopes. Initially, everything was smooth sailing, but sometimes, sailing, like life, doesn't go according to plan. Our journey took an unexpected turn when we were battered by relentless rain and squalls. To make matters worse, our windvane broke—for the second time! With 2,200 nautical miles to the Azores and only 70 to return to St. Martin, the choice was clear. It's always better to face a delay than to tackle a major problem at sea. So, very disappointed, we turned back, getting drenched by a huge downpour on our return to St. Martin. We repaired the windvane, bought some new foul-weather gear, and found a better weather window.
