The race to Iceland and back was a 2,500 nautical mile needle match on a scale that not even the experts expected. A close race throughout and not just among the latest hot ships. Theis was a race where the upgraded earlier generation boats and their skippers were putting the pressure on the big guns right to the end. A great race in itself and as we explain, a fascinating insight into what could be in store in a few month's time when the Vendée Globe race kicks off in November.

We titled this From Paradise to carnage. In this episode we sail to the Halkidiki area where we find an anchorage to die for. A few days later a super cell hit the area where we were anchored. How your day can change within minutes! We were hit with winds around 60mph, knocked sideways and dragged for quite a way. This was the day we thought we were going to lose the boat! Seven people died as a result of the storm that hit us. This week we take on a mission to sail up wind to an island we've had our eye on for some time. Sailing into the strong 20 knot wind, we inch our way into a shallow bay and put down an anchor. Well this is what boat life is meant to be like! We set off from Morne Rouge in Grenada to Rhonde Island, a remote and uninhabited island north of the mainland. After last week's cutless bearing scare (check out the video here: ) we're trying to use our engine a whole lot less (we are a SAILBOAT after all!) so we get our sails up and make the 20 mile bash against the current (Adam explains how you can check for this too prior to heading out for a sail). 12 juillet, tout démarre sous des sons de corne de brume ! Pourtant, nous n’allons pas bien loin, seulement 38 milles, mais je crois savoir… Ma tarte aux citrons d’hier soir a dut faire son effet ! Et puis, il y a ce tout, qui, en voyage, de l’autre côté du monde, rapproche les vies vadrouilleuses comme les nôtres. Retrouver des compatriotes dans un lieu si improbable créé forcement des liens ! Alors, il suffit que de quelques jours pour qu’un simple départ devienne aussi important qu’une course au grand large ! À peine familiarisés avec notre environnement, l’envie boulimique de bouger nous reprend, c’est inextinguible et inassouvissable. Le monde est « si grand » et nos vies « si coutes », nous ressentons un besoin vital d’aller toujours plus loin pour en voir toujours un peu plus et le peu plus qui nous attend, se trouve à Lindi, une ville portuaire à un peu moins de soixante-dix kilomètres. Je vous mets au défi de trouver des informations touristiques de cette zone de la Tanzanie. À part sa géolocalisation et les quelques informations historiques, il semble que cette région n’intéresse pas l’industrie touristique et c’est tout ce que l’on aime ! Ah si, chose captivante, mes recherches me dévoileront que de 1909 à 1912, Lindi attira l'attention des paléontologues du monde entier après la découverte, sur le site de Tendunguru, à 100 km au nord-ouest, de très nombreux squelettes de dinosaures, en particulier de l'espèce Giraffatitan brancai, un brachiosauridé, qui est l'un des plus gros dinosaures découverts à ce jour. S’imaginant suivre les pistes de ces scientifiques, nous partons, vent portant vers la capitale, qui fut le point de chute de ces chercheurs passionnés et tel un Ptérodactyle, notre Blacky, toutes voiles dehors, file à bonne allure. Avant cette paisible cadence, un peu de sport a été nécessaire car notre foc un peu récalcitrant a eu besoin d’une thérapie réparatrice au niveau de l’arrêtoir de son profil en haut du mât. Tenu normalement avec des piges, la butée bloquant la remontée inappropriée de l’enrouleur ne tient plus et quand la voile est hissée et étarquée, le tambour à tendance à remonter sur le profile, entrainant un blocage lors de l’enroulement. Pour parer au problème, une seule alternative, monter en haut du mât. Nous avions déjà remédié au problème, il y a quelques mois, en s’ingéniant à fabriquer une pièce que nous avions fixée au-dessus de la rondelle déflecteur de drisse et bloquée avec un sert câble et c’est justement celui-ci qui s’est desserré. L’aventure ne laisse pas de place à l’indifférence ! Tout est source d’intérêt et d’émerveillement. Chaque instant prend de l’importance, rien n’est anodin. Ce dogme auquel nous adhérons, nous amène certaines fois vers des situations délicates comme celle d’entrer dans une baie inconnue, avec les cartes de notre traceur, fausses ! Ou qu’il n’aime pas ça mon capitaine ! Les voiles sont affalées, les moteurs allumés. Les régimes au minimum, nous avançons à tâtons, faudrait pas risquer un échouage dans la rivière de Lukeledi. Avec prudence, Cyril dirige Black Lion vers un mouillage convenable. Nous sommes devant le port de Lindi, deux mètres cinquante d’eau limoneuse sous nos quilles nous portent. Une nuée fraiche aux odeurs de feu de camps s’exhale de toute la baie. D’une rive à l’autre le va-et-vient d’une barge aide la population à traverser le fleuve et nous, au milieu de tout ça, nous sommes spectateurs d’un coucher de soleil hors norme ! Nous avons le devoir d’aller nous présenter aux douanes, à Mtwara, le bureau analogue nous l’a bien précisé. Dans chaque port, une entrée et une sortie doit être effectuée. Pourquoi ? Excellente question et quand nous aurons la réponse, vous serez les premiers au courant ! Finalement, l’obligation n’est pas si contraignante, elle nous fait rencontrer du monde et notre agent promu à notre admission est ravi de visiter un catamaran, à croire que nous sommes le premier qu’il inspecte ! En échange, mon Tchoupi a l’autorisation de monter à bord d’un bateau de cargaison en provenance de Dar El Salam ! À la vue de cette construction navale d’un autre temps, nous nous questionnons sur les moyens de sauvetages locaux. Combien ont dut perdre la vie le long de ces côtes ? Et encore, celui-ci de bateau est massif mais toutes ces petites embarcations, sans équipement de sécurité, ni moyens de communications, avec pour seul moteur, une voile en plastique recyclé, combien d’entre elles ne sont pas rentrées au port ? Difficile en constatant tant de différences de ....
