Wild & angry seas are normally associated with offshore sailing where the sheer expanse of water & high winds create this effect. From time to time especially when the Meltemi wind is at it's peak this occurs in the Aegean, as we witnessed recently on a passage just off the coast of Turkey. Dolphins came to join in the fun, and followed for a number of miles, which just added to the thrilling experience. Vlog #13 We sail from Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz and check out the town, its really nice but access to shore is extremely hard. You used to be able to anchor out by the pier and leave your dinghy tied to it, but you're no longer able to as its damaged. So we had to go all the way to the marina in the dinghy, and walk back into town. We left there and sailed onto San Simeon, which was not the original plan, but Jess seen there was a giant castle there and really wanted to see it! We ran into a huge pile of bullkelp in the middle of the night that set us back 3-4 hours on our journey. We had read online that it was wayyyyyy to hard to surf land your dinghy at San Simeon, and most people that tried flipped theirs, but not us! Champions! We went up to the Hearst Castle for a tour, truly this was an indescribable place. The only way to really get it, is to see it for yourself! Hearst was building it for decades with an architect, and it was never even finished before he passed away. Regardless of the bad reputation, with modern weather forecasting it is easy to time it right and find a good weather window. We sailed a total of 350 nautical miles and it took us 53 hours altogether from Camaret in France to A Coruna in Spain. The weather for our crossing started off a lot lighter than forecasted with an average of 5 knots and towards the end it turned out to be a lot stronger than forecasted with an average of 30 knots. Overall we couldn't have been happier with our crossing, despite the lack of sleep towards the end in the strong winds. We also get to properly test out our new solar and wind power setup to see if it was sufficient to keep the batteries topped up and also run the fridge, autopilot and all the other navigation eqipment. All the necessities we need on a longer ocean passage, specially with the Atlantic crossing coming up. Countries borders were closed and it seemed for at least the next few weeks we would not be travelling anywhere. The streets were becoming empty and people were told to remain in their houses. We did not want to be around civilisation so we did what us yachties do best, head off grid to our our own island home. Living off grid for months at a time is nothing new for us yachties. We are always trying to seek out the far away tropical paradise places away from everyone and everything. Now with the pandemic really taking over the world, now is the best time to do what we do best. With a boat well stocked and ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, our plans change and for now itt is time to head off grid for lockdown! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed on our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! What happens when your first mate is only little, but she needs to do all the rope work. She likes to get the rope on the top bollard which isn't always easy, as you'll see. These are not the tallest locks, however, they are difficult to get onto due to their lack of bollards in the middle of the lock wall. in this episode, we go from Chaumont to Langres, on our way down to the Mediterranean on our sailing boat, tackling impossible weed and tall locks. Engine malfunction and can’t switch gears! When the port engine malfunctions the starboard engine automatically switches into neutral! Not easy when trying to dock! Job #1 Install a new Sphere 3.3 kilogram washing machine Job#2 Rewire our generator so that the battery cables go to the start battery and not the house battery bank. Job #3 Queensland Canvas and Marine replace our clears and enclose our cockpit for all weather protection.
