We have been finding ways to keep ourselves busy during lockdown and we are now expecting a new little crew member onto Nandji. Living in a small space in the tropics whilst pregnant, is not everybody's idea of a fun time. Bonita is experiencing the first trimester and it is important we take good care of her during this period to ensure a healthy baby. Her symptoms are starting to show and some days are harder than others but Bonita powers on through (whilst I smile and chuckle) and we head back to the doctor to get another ultra sound. What a noise it is to hear your babies heart beat for the first time! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! FRIDAY BONUS VIDEO: Testing my old PFD.... the results aren't good!!! Hello Friends, This is a short little video I shot a while ago showing me test my 5 year old Automatic Inflatable PFD (Personal Floatation Device) from West Marine. After jumping in the water a few seconds passed before it was activated and then once it inflated it only released from half of PFD leaving the other half still inside and the whole thing choking me. As I mention in the video, I have had this PFD since 2015 and never tested it or serviced it so I might be partially to blame for the results, I will for sure be breaking the velcro on my PFD's once a year from now on to insure this doesn't happen in an emergency. Does our boat do well drying out at low tide? We'll pretty much find out!! We chose the spot we anchored in because we knew we could get in with a shallow draft, but what we were not expecting was for the tide to fall so low that we'd be sitting in 2 feet of water! But, since we had the opportunity, we used that time to inspect our bottom paint we applied last spring to see how it's held up over the past year without a single cleaning. Using the beautiful sunny day we had, we took the dinghy, as well as Georgie, over to the neighboring island of St. Martin to enjoy their white sand beaches. Looking around, it was hard to tell we were sitting in a corner of England. It looked way too Caribbean to be so far north! Lastly, we went to the posh island of Tresco to spend a few days. Beautiful hikes awaited us, and a secret little lookout over the sound and all the boats anchored there. Definitely an island group that is a little slice of paradise and we were pretty sure we could spend months there exploring it. We hope you enjoy! Much love from the Isles of Scilly! We arrive to Grand Cayman Island and coincidentally there are 6 cruise ships here and everywhere is packed with humanity. This is not our usual path, exploring remote islands and living off the sea but it's in our route to Cuba, so we make the most of it. We take a day off and Margarida is in Margarida heaven with loads of shops and yummy food everywhere. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach in Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony with our 4 kids, just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. Join us as we finally enter the Atlantic, and face our toughest passage to date as we sail for the Canary Islands. Off the back of the most easterly hurricane in the North Atlantic, we face huge waves, big gusts, ferocious squalls and fast moving tankers. It's our biggest challenge to date physically, mentally, and sleep-wise. At least along the way we get to play with a family of dolphins! Na ons vertrek op 18 mei 2020 hebben we de afgelopen weken in Zeeland gezeild. Nu, eind mei, is het tijd om richting het noorden te gaan. We gaan de zee op via de sluis bij Stellendam (waar we deze winter in de mist ook binnenkwamen vanaf zee, zie aflevering 12 ). Daarna 'rechtsaf' naar het noorden. We moeten dan bij Rotterdam de Maasmond oversteken. Toch altijd wel spannend. Je kunt zien hoe we hen aanroepen op de marifoon, hoe we vervolgens verder mogen varen, maar dan tóch nog weer worden opgeroepen. Er komt een groot zeeschip aan... Wij zijn Ben en Felia. Jaren hebben wij de droom gehad om samen over de wereld te zeilen. In mei 2020 zijn we aan dit grote avontuur begonnen. In onze Atlantic43, Eva genaamd, gaan wij waar de wind ons brengt.
