This week, I’m finishing the LP SmartSide siding on the shed, and it’s a perfect example of that process. Nothing felt natural at first. Every step was slow, awkward, and inefficient. But as the days went on, repetition started to matter, things began to click, and by the end I finally felt comfortable with the work. That learning curve — going from uncertainty to confidence through doing — is something I’ve come to really appreciate about building this place. Along the way, we also took time to step away from the work: hiking a trail right next to our property with views into the Smoky Mountains, wandering through a festive downtown Bryson City, and visiting a local farm (including some very cool Scottish Highland cows). 🌍 Épisode 42 - Béquia au mouillage 😅 pas le temps se niaiser 😂 Nous nous retrouvons au matin même de notre arrivée à Bequia, au cœur des Grenadines, et l’aventure continue dans une ambiance 100 % conviviale 🌴⛵ Direction la plage pour un barbecue avec les bateaux copains, suivi d’une partie de pétanque improvisée sur le sable, rires et bonne humeur garantis. De retour au bateau, la fin de journée nous offre un magnifique coucher de soleil, comme seuls les Caraïbes savent le faire. Dans cet épisode, nous partons aussi pour une randonnée inoubliable en compagnie de nos amis du bateau Ilot (Audrey et Fred, avec leurs enfants) ainsi que Pol, le copain de Mathis du bateau Marant. Objectif : le Spring View Park, un point de vue spectaculaire sur les hauteurs de Bequia 📍✨ Après cette belle marche, retour au bateau à la tombée de la nuit… avec, une fois encore, un coucher de soleil exceptionnel. In this episode we take the mainsail and lazybag down so the sailmaker can repair them. We also figure out why the starboard engine is not starting and give it a good cleaning. This shows an autopilot that is decoupled from the helm. There is a big advantage to this, in that you can put your hands through the helm wheel, and if the autopilot is turning the boat, the wheel is not turning simultaneously. Thus it does not hurt your hand or cause a safety issue. One thing to be careful of however is that if you forget that the auto pilot is on and you try to turn the helm, the boat will not steer. This could freak you out a little. So just be aware of that when using a decoupled auto pilot.

Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Canon R50 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Back up is a Canon 200d. Action scenes and small blogging is done with an Insta 360 Ace2. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. I also use an Insta 360 and have two drones, a Magic mini2 and Mavic pro Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over several days. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have limited communications with the outside World.
