For the first sail of the season, we have James & Laura (Sailing Zingaro) on board and we set sail to explore the stunning uninhabited island of Klein Curacao. Klein meaning "little" in Dutch is a tiny island situated between the main island of Curacao and Venezuela. It has a rather dark past as the island was once used by the Dutch West India Company to quarantine slaves from Africa before they were allowed to arrive on mainland Curacao. The islands windward side is a graveyard for ships partly due to the islands low laying land and minimum vegetation which makes spotting the island from sea difficult. One of the wrecks we explore is the oil tanker "Maria Bianca" that ran aground in the late 80's and could not be salvaged or saved. Her LOA is 19.3m and she has a beam of 4.6m with a draft of 2.98m She weighs 33t and she can cruise at 7 kts with the engine and 8-10 kts on sail depending on the wind. She is fairly comfortable with 15 to 20 kts of wind. Freshwater capacity to last over 2 weeks and a fuel range of 13 days steaming. Sailing to St. Barts, the St. Tropez of the Caribbean. Exploring the beaches, nightlife and the exotic town. With an unfavorable forecast, s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) departed St. Eustatius earlier than anticipated and motored the short distance NNE to the French island of St. Barts. We anchored in the crowded bay outside Gustavia port, surrounded by an interesting mixture of semi abandoned boats and super yachts. Having explored the historic town with all its classy shopping, we took a hire car and set off around the island. First observing aircraft doing their tricky landing on the infamous down-slope St. Barts runway, then heading to the many beaches and resorts around the island. We visited Anse de Flamands, Cheval Blanc resort, Anse de Cayes, Baie de St.Jean, Anse de Lorient, watch surfers off the Christopher Hotel, Anse de Grand Cul de Sac and its wonderful Le Barthelemy Hotel, Anse de Saline and Plage Gouverneur. On the last day, we departed the rolly conditions off Gustavia and moved north into Anse de Colombier, a beautifully secluded bay only reachable by boat or on foot. On its southern side lies the abandoned beach house built and once owned by the Rothchild family. 21-28 January 2019

We're only 48 hours into having the first set of components for our catamaran, and she's already starting to come together and look like a boat! Follow along as we work tirelessly to get all the components unloaded from the container - and fail miserably at our time allowance. But honestly, that part soon matters less and less to us because we have a great group of people working their butts off to make sure every piece is taken off carefully and doesn't receive any damage. 36 hours later, we gather a few of them back to put the main pieces of the hull together while we still have access to the telehandler. In 1997, after missing out on his Olympic rowing medal dream, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014, and married with three children we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Creating the Best Performance Catamaran - It's the Ultimate Compromise! | Harbors Unknown Ep. 23 This week we're discussing how to manage weight on a catamaran and balancing comfort and performance. When designers such as Reichel Pugh (the architect of the Seawind 1600) are developing a boat they start with a designed displacement. The hull underwater must displace an amount of water equal to the weight of the entire boat. There is typically a 2-3% weight variance allowance to accommodate the additional weight between manufacturing and what an owner adds to the boat. However, once the weight surpasses 3% of the designed displacement, the wetted surface area will increase causing more friction in the water and more wave resistance impacting performance. Today we’re talking with Scott Sloan, who ordered a Seawind 1600, and was able to save about 2,000 lbs from the standard boat weight by carefully considering the weight of everything added to the boat.
