Van Öland steken we over naar het Zweedse vasteland aan de oostkust en zeilen dan verder zuidwaarts. Voor zover mogelijk overnachten we achter ons eigen anker en komen zo op de mooiste plekjes. Omdat onze Eva een beetje achterover hangt verplaatsen we ballast van bakboord naar voren. Het helpt bijna. Op een mistige dag varen we naar de meest zuidoostelijke eilanden van Zweden, Utklippan. Het is er prachtig, maar we varen snel door naar Karlskrona en pakken dan de kans om op een oostenwind verder naar het westen te varen. Wij zijn Ben en Felia. Jaren hebben wij de droom gehad om samen over de wereld te zeilen. In mei 2020 zijn we aan dit grote avontuur begonnen. In onze Atlantic43, Eva genaamd, gaan wij waar de wind ons brengt. Rebecca Childress made it a priority just weeks after Patrick passed away from Covid 19 to make her sailboat “Brick House” safer for herself and less experienced crew, determined that she would leave Cape Town and continue her circumnavigation. She adds a new Liferaft, as well as ACR AISLink MOB units for the life vests. She also works through a checklist of hundreds of items trying to make sure everything is safe for this very big ocean crossing. At least one of the items on the checklist saves the boat! She comes to feel the great burden and responsibility and risk of making sure her boat is seaworthy and safe! New Captain Michael Hayward does his best to make sure the boat is ready to sail safely across the Atlantic! Patrick Childress silently and strongly guides them from within Rebecca’s heart and soul. They are now ready to sail cross the Atlantic Ocean, from Cape Town South Africa to Brazil and the Caribbean, on SV Brick House. They make further upgrades to the sailboat to prepare for the long ocean crossing. Her original name was ''Antares''.She is a Jongert Trewes Design with 5mm Steel Hull and rigged as a Ketch with Aluminium Masts. Her LOA is 19.3m and she has a beam of 4.6m with a draft of 2.98m She weighs 33t and she can cruise at 7 kts with the engine and 8-10 kts on sail depending on the wind. She is fairly comfortable with 15 to 20 kts of wind. Freshwater capacity to last over 2 weeks and a fuel range of 13 days steaming. New Crew Joins Zephyr! This is an exciting episode with two Spanish brothers joining us aboard Zephyr. Hopefully they stay with us and cross the Atlantic with us! We love having crew that is as excited as us to sail...and these brothers fit the bill all too well. Guille (youngest one in the family) is a sail instructor in his home town of Cartagena, Murcia. He teaches kids and adults and during the off season he's off to the mountains to teach some snowboarding. Goni (older brother) is a rad kite surf instructor as well as a snowboarder and surfer. We can't wait for him to introduce us to some kite surfing and what better way than straight off the back of Zephyr! We leave good old Mar Menor behind and start our journey towards Gibraltar.
