Time to reminisce a bit. John talks about the first boat - a Sea Ray 280 Sundancer, and how it felt to experience boating for the first time. Luckily, learning the skills on the Bay of Quinte at the end of the 2018 season, with perfect weather and wind, sure made it a lot easier on our stress levels! It was a great boat - quick and nimble - and it showed us what boating could be like. More importantly, that season or two showed us that a cruiser wasn't what we really wanted, and led us to the Carver aft cabin. But you never forget your first!

The Hylas 70 is the product of world-renowned yacht designer, German Frers, and is an exceptional example of a high-quality contemporary semi-custom performance cruising yacht. As the flagship of the highly regarded series built by one of the world's most experienced yacht builders, Queen Long Marine, the yacht is strong and fast, with a customizable spacious 4 stateroom interior arrangement with exquisite varnished teak woodwork, and custom bamboo cabin sole with contrasting inlay. The Euro-style exterior deck design has a wide expanse of unrestricted decking that flows to meet the topside. Her classic hull has a graceful sheer line, a reverse counter stern with a garage, and an integral swim platform. The hull is constructed of fiberglass-twaron, a carbon aramid fiber with alternating solid FRP glass layup. The glass is hand-laid with no core and utilizes vinylester resins and an isophthalic gel coat for superior protection against osmosis and hull blistering. A modern fin bulb keel was chosen to maximize stability and performance with its lower center of gravity, although other keel options are available, this design is preferred by most. The solid lead keel is mated to the hull with 35 mm stainless steel keel bolts with transverse-mounted 8 mm backing plates. The rudder is 60% skegged for optimal performance under power while offering strength and protection for the rudder post and bearings. The rudder bottom plane is above the keel plane, further protecting the yacht in a grounding situation. The hull is protected by two epoxy barrier coats below the waterline. The bow is neatly trimmed with a solid stainless-steel striker plate for bow protection. The deck is constructed of GRP (fiberglass) with ¾” sandwich end-grain balsa core. The deck can be customized with either slow growth teak or contrasting non-skid. For added strength, the deck is solid fiberglass where deck fittings and high-stress areas are located. The deck is both chemically and mechanically bonded to the hull with 3M 5200 and stainless-steel bolts. Watertight collision bulkhead forward with independent overboard drainage. A very large step-down sail locker forward with a separate stainless access hatch and a sail locker are all forward of a watertight bulkhead. The enlarged stern garage provides ample storage and incorporates a dedicated auto bilge pump. The large aft deck lazarettes, port, and starboard have dual Bailey latches for a watertight seal. The transom has a full-beam watertight stern bulkhead across the aft port and starboard lazarettes and a transom garage with integral steps and swim platform. Whether you're a coastal cruiser or potential circumnavigator, the Hylas 70 is a luxury performance cruising yacht with the integrity, exquisite finish, and state of the art systems necessary to go anywhere.

We've managed to weld in the new transom with some lovely fresh steel so now we can start cutting out the rest of the corroded steel from the cockpit. Finally some beautiful weather, and as the boatyard becomes more and more active and bustling we crack on with the work on our own project of restoring this huge steel sailing yacht. We've got the amazing new equipment from Lincoln to work with and are making good progress cutting out old and rusty parts with the plasma cutter and welding in new sections with the Lincoln Bester 210MP Multi Purpose welder. And not only that but there were no accidents this week. All fingers and toes remained intact. Although Melissa did learn the hard way that it's best to wear jeans or work trousers that go over your boots when welding! Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boat and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager but made a pause of about 15 years without sailing as an adult, had just begun to pick-up the interest before she meet Anders a 4 years ago. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 3 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans. Litza is a Devon Rex cat and she is the real cattain aboard. Fridá af Wisby is a Wauquiez 47 pilot saloon that we Gitte and Anders bought in UK in 2019 and that we have sailed to Gotland and in season 1 2020 we sail in the Baltic Sea.

On this episode we replace an escape hatch that could have sunk our boat! It comes from an issue with the escape hatches that have been know to detach from the sailboat hull, usually causing the boat to sink and we fixed it just in time! We have know about this issue for a while now, and its something that has worried us considerably but also one that we have been quite unable to address until now. It requires us to be in one place long enough for the company to send the replacement hatches to, as well as that place big enough that the company in Europe can send them to. THEN, once we receive them, we have to EITHER haul the boat out of the water - what we wanted to do originally, but costs us nearly $1000- OR find a safe spot that is calm enough to complete the work safely from underneath the yacht. It finally all came together in Mexico, we stopped sailing long enough to receive the hatches, and tied up to a nice marina in La Paz. Here the water was calm and conditions were good to complete this arduous task... but not all the stars lined up perfectly and it took us far more work than it should have to get this troublesome job complete. But after teaming up for a full day, busting some knuckles, calling some experts, and a little but of cursing, we finally got it removed and swapped out for the recalled replacement. FINALLY!
