Vanaf verschillende havens aan het IJsselmeer kun je meedoen met de nachttocht van de Toerzeilers. De tocht was op 29 mei. Ik vertrok in de ochtend vanaf Marina Muiderzand en zeilde eerst naar Enkhuizen om daar te vertrekken. Omdat de wind pal tegen was, kruiste ik het hele stuk. Uiteindelijk zeilde ik 58 mijl. De nachttocht was nieuw voor mij en ook omdat ik solo zeilde had het weer een andere dimensie. Ik kom op het afgesproken tijdstip om 02.00 uur aan in de Pekelharinghaven van Medemblik. Ahoy again! Following up from last week, the work on Altair... now Ragdoll continues. The first few months onboard were hard work - there was lots of cleaning, organising and fixing to do. We've had some interesting finds which made us question whether this really was the boat for us, BUT.. after a couple of months, Ragdoll was beginning to feel like OUR boat. This little appetizer shows a typical weeklong course on the Sea of Cortez. Peaceful anchorages, great hikes & swimming. Intense learning and challenging sailing. In a week our students start by learning their boat, then proceed to learn the points of sail, anchoring techniques, navigation and planning. They each act as the captain of the day for 24 hours where they chart a course, assign roles, sail to the destination and select an overnight anchorage and do anchor watch. Of course they assign a chef, sous chef and DJ for the evening. At Nautilus, we do actual cruising to train students what it's like when they charter boats in the future. This week we had 4 people successfully complete the ASA 101-104 levels. Congratulations to Charlie, Kathy, Brice and Kristen, well done.

Today is the first day that Carmen ("Cusie") and I have been able to take off in months. So we decided to take Reverie for her first official sail after being brought back from the yard. A lot of work has been put into this sailboat restoration. She has been completely rebuilt from the keel up. Below the water line, we replaced the Shaft Strut, Shaft, Propeller (New 16” 10 Deg 3 Blade), Rudder Shoe, Rebuilt Rudder and Centerboard, New Pendant, New piping for pendant line, all thru hulls and transducer. I have other videos on this channel that show a lot of the work done to Reverie. So we took Reverie for a sail on Terra Ceia Bay. Beautiful bright blue skies, winds 12 - 15 knots. Ideal conditions for our first sail. Terra Ceia Bay is located near entrance to Tampa Bay and the Skyway Bridge. We are starting the process of testing all of the systems, so Cusie and I sailed her to test sails, winches, performance, electronics, etc. Of course I could not get Cusie of the helm the whole time. She only let me dock Reverie. =) Overall, we had a great day and the shakedown was a great success!! We are looking forward to finishing the interior projects which are not that many, so we can take our first overnight cruise. If it looks like a Cat, is it ready? Not quite, in this episode we move to the external and internal construction phase. A team of 7 people prepare all the window and hatch cutouts and fit all the cockpit furniture. They will start with the floors and insert the structural fillets or “samosas” because that’s what they look like, says Chief of Production Jonathan Paarman. The day kept the normal structure of a separate AM and PM race, providing 4.5 hours of true extreme enduro action for those lucky enough to watch on! Cowm is known for its famous hill climbs and the team, led by Tom Sagar, didn’t disappoint this year with the track design, with a hill climb at every turn, giving the riders little time to rest during the lap. Unlike normal where the Vets take the lead in the AM race, it was down to the younger generation to get out in front and show the old guys how to do it. Ashton Brightmore was out in front from the get-go and rode excellently for 10 laps, keeping his lead for the whole time, not only in his class but also the overall race. Bert Boam took the runner up spot on nine laps, with Cynan Jones taking the last spot on the podium in third. Mark Houson in the Vets class proved that age and experience can be just as good as youth and enthusiasm, making it to second overall and easily claiming first in class, but he had competition along the way. Chris Salt was a lap behind in second spot while Darren Skillin completed the Vets top-three right behind Salt. In the Sportsman class it was Kurtis Knowles who finished first, also claiming fifth overall in the race after an impressive ride. His nearest competitor, Tom Slater, was never far behind and eventually finished second in class 1 minute 40 seconds behind Crowder. Phil Hall was a lap down on the top two in third in class and eighth overall. The championship race began at 1pm with a highly charged surge of riders battling their way through a bog into the tight first corner, then down the first of many steep hills; setting the chaotic tone for the rest of the race. It wasn’t until riders were clear of the start area that the racing really began. Initially, it was a fierce two-way battle between Billy Bolt and Will Hoare, but Bolt came out on top and finished the first lap in the lead. Billy put in one of his best rides to keep a consistent pace and eventually build up a huge lead on second place. However, disaster struck Will Hoare in the last 30 minutes of the race when he got held up by a backmarker and broke his gear lever making him drop down to fourth, a disappointing result considering his performance throughout the race. In the end it was Joe Deakin who took second place, followed by Jono Richardson in third, both having put in great rides. A significant group of Expert riders followed the Championship class home. Mitchell Brightmore came out on top, a lap ahead of the rest of his class. He was up against some fierce competition but still managed to get inside the top ten in ninth place, with second in class Lee Sampson finishing just outside in 11th place overall. Will Westgarth followed close behind in third. The Clubman class saw only a minute and a half separate the top 3! Jack Winn beat Doug Lote to be top Clubman rider on the day with 8 laps under his belt. Max Diment took third in class, a lap down on the top two. As for the Elite Vets, Mark Jackson pulled it out of the bag to take the class win after an outstanding performance. Second place Grant Churchwood was close behind and Harold Crawford one lap behind in third. A massive well-done to Fast Eddy and his dedicated team as always, who spent the week at Cowm preparing an excellent track which made for a great day of extreme enduro racing! — with Paul McKie. FIRE!!!! FRUSTRATION!!! This was a hard week! We had a lot on our plates and the work on the boat was challenging to say the least so there was a bit of friction in the air as we tackled the front of the cockpit seats and struggled to trim and fit the panels to shape. Even straight bits of metal on a boat aren't actually straight so no matter how carefully you measure and cut there will always be some fettling and fiddling to get bits to go where you want them to, and of course working with panels like this with sharp corner and a fair bit of weight in them is pretty dangerous. Well, we got there in the end and have three out of the four fronts welded in place. And along with that Melissa spent an evening after work removing the old instrumentation from the pilothouse so we can relocate them to a more sensible position and weld up the holes. When hauling out here, you have ten days included in the price of the haul out. Sidney, my local naval engineer is convinced we will be done in seven days. There is a lot to do in that time. Sanding of the hull. Rudder preparation. Epoxy filling in rudder mold. Curing and sanding. Painting epoxy primer. Gel coat. And anti-fouling. As well Alex, my mechanical engineer dropped the rudder. Cleaned out the fuel system and did a lube job on my Perkins 4-108. And then we have to put Galopin back in the water. And that's an interesting experience. We sail and enjoy our final days around Baja and La Paz Mexico with some close friends. It was a few days filled with good sailing, good laughs, and good water based fun! Last week we welcomed Jeremy and Shannon from Colorado and started off with a bang by taking them to swim with sea lions, and than scuba diving on a sunken ship. We woke up very early to pick up my parents at the airport in Faro. It had been several months, from before we moved onto the boat since we last saw them so we were very happy! And for them it would be the first time to see our new home. We had an amazing week together and took them out sailing. It was not a great first sailing experience because we had trouble with our code zero that ended up in the water. After my parents left we discussed our future sailing plans and came to the conclusion that we would cross the Atlantic Ocean to sail to the Caribbean sooner than expected. We had about a month to prepare everything. While we waited for our crew members to arrive we made sure we had all the necessary equipment on board and that everything was working perfectly. We did some cleaning and we had to buy a lot of food. In between preparations we also took some time to relax and discover the surroundings. We took the dinghy to visit the Benagil cave, a must see when you are in the Algarve, but only reachable by boat. While we were in the Marina in Portimão we met some fellow Belgian adventurers who were also planning to cross the ocean. Even though sailing across the ocean was already exciting enough to me, they were going to take it a step further by rowing across the ocean. 16 avril, 150 milles, dix de plus qu’hier au 2º32'617 sud ; 39º22'756 ouest, c’est plutôt pas mal et comme l’heure est matinale, mon capitaine a dans l’idée de raccourcir un peu notre route en coupant dans la zone des cent mètres. Ce tracé visiblement sous tutelle des pêcheurs, n’étant pas sans les inconvenants qu’il y suppose, nous allons devoir rester vigilants et en sortir avant la nuit. Large sur l’eau, les canots en bois d’environs dix mètres, munis d’un seul habitacle servant de poste de pilotage trainent à leur bord, cinq voir six manœuvres. Avant de savoir leur technique de pêche, chaque détail est un indice sur leur convention, sommes-nous devant des chaluts, dans ce cas, nous devons passer par leur avant, sommes-nous en présence de palangriers à la dérive, de cette hypothèse, mieux vaut viser la poupe, les embarcations forment-elles des binômes, sous cette supposition, il est judicieux d’éviter de passer entre les deux, mais cette fois-ci, nous n’aurons pas à observer bien longtemps, la réponse vient à nous d’elle-même ! À deux encablures de nous, brisant la houle de face, s’en vient par notre tribord, un de ces skiffs. Prévoyants l’éventualité d’une demande, bien scellés, deux paquets de cigarettes étaient prêts à être catapultés, quant à l’approche du sujet de nos interrogations, les bras d’un des pêcheurs, tendus vers le ciel et prolongés de deux belles grappes de crustacés, nous donnent le dénouement à nos questionnements ! Nos investigateurs sont des langoustiers, ce qui nous libère de toute confusion et de circonstance, nous ravis de l’opportunité qui nous est proposé, d’un troc en pleine mer de tabac contre langoustes ! Nous sommes repus, neuf langoustes, nous n’en demandions pas tant, à vrai dire nous n’avons rien demandé, c’est eux, munis d’un grand sourire édenté qui nous ont jeté, sur le pont, en s’approchant précautionneusement, les belles brésiliennes dans un sac de jute, certainement heureux de leur échange, ils venaient de ranimer en nous, ce que l’on aime par-dessus tout dans l’aventure, le pittoresque de l’imprévu ! Il me semble qu’il faut une certaine dose de fatalisme pour se laisser porter dans l’obscurité aux grés des vents et des courants, doctrine à laquelle s’ajoute l’instinct, l’instinct qui malgré tout, sans le recourt à la réflexion, nous fait agir naturellement ! Uni avec son bateau, mon capitaine devine, perçoit ! Engourdie dans un demi-sommeil, confus, il pressent, il sent ! D’un œil sondeur, il veille et toujours au bon moment, il est prêt à bondir. Indélibérément, c’est à ce moment précis qu’il sait… Le vent monte, bien qu’imperceptible dans le carré par son confort, un grain sec s’active, les 36 nœuds sont bientôt atteints, tout est sous contrôle… Quatre jours que nous longeons de loin la côte du pays qui tient son nom d’un bois dur de ses forêts, le Brésil ! Les 562,1 milles qui nous séparent de Jacare, au point 1º51'771 sud ; 41º31'493 ouest, nous ont fait dépasser Galhinos, Fortaleza et bientôt Lençois, où il est arbitré que nous ne nous arrêterons pas, non pas par manque d’envies mais par prudence ! Étant à l’extérieur de la ligne des deux cent mètres qui parait être la limite subaquatique du plateau continental, nous sommes portés par le courant et ne courons aucun risque avec les pêcheurs, puisque seuls des cargos y circulent, or si nous prenons la directions des dunes de Lençois, il y a de fortes chances pour que nous soyons obligés de slalomer dans un dédale de hauts plateaux, minés de canotiers et de surcroit en pleine nuit et même si mon désir de nous approcher des terres, pour au moins pouvoir envoyer des nouvelles à nos petits, me tenais à cœur, je dois reconnaitre que notre sécurité vaut bien le report. Cependant, je reste contrariée ! L’abonnement Iridium d’un mois que nous avions étant terminé, nous avons décidé par économie de poursuivre notre route sans, mais en absence de cette connexion, pas moyen de rassurer Jonathan et Claire et cela me chagrine ! Dans cette situation je ne peux m’empêcher de penser à l’époque Moitessier, lorsque les proches devaient parfois attendre plusieurs mois avant d’avoir des nouvelles, ou par chance, quand un cargo passait dans les parages d’un voyageur, un message pouvait alors être relayé à terre, mais il fallait se faire à l’idée de vivre dans l’incertitude ! En me voyant attristée de cette affaire, il s’en est fallu de peu pour qu’à l’appel Vhf de l’immense bâtiment de 362 mètres, nous informant l’intention d’un passage par tribord, mon Tchoupi demande de transmettre le bon déroulement de notre navigation à l’équipage de Sagar Rani ! Le ciel bien dégagé depuis quatre heures de la cotonnade que nous lui connaissons depuis plusieurs jours, nous nous attendions à une association courbe jaunie sur platitude scintillante d’une pure beauté, mais c’était en sous-estimant la rapidité à laquelle...

The Skyblade is a cutting-edge design for a cutting-edge discipline. With Ramon Pastor and Fernando Martinez taking 1st and 3rd places at the European Championship in Portugal in 2019, and Hélène Noesmoen winning the Formula Foil World Championship in Switzerland, the design proved its competitive potential. Loftsails R&D has worked intensively to improve the Skyblades for the 2021 season. The aspect ratio of the sail has been increased, the head width narrowed, new batten profiles developed, and vertical shapes redistributed. The result is a shape with a significantly more forward-oriented drive. The updated design requires a shorter boom length that has reduced backhand pressure in flight. The sail exhaust was also fine-tuned to give it a softer lower leech. The synergy of these updates has resulted in a substantially lighter feel, improved acceleration, and more control at high speed.
