It was a belter of a leg. With a forecast for 30kts on the nose and wind against tide, the Gibraltar Strait provided a sharp focus for the leg from Cascais to Alicante. There was plenty to be concerned about ahead of Leg 2 of The Ocean Race Europe, but when they got to the infamous Strait it was worse! Then, once through the real stress started when the breeze switched off. This was a leg where sleep was hard to come by while stress was in plentiful supply. From the back to the front and back to the back, fortunes rose and fell with the rhythm and frequency of a roller coaster. Little surprise that when crews arrived in Alicante they looked shot. PlanetSail was there to hear at first hand what Leg 2 had been like.

It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and Rachel purchased Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Luperon was a stopping point to prepare entry documents into the Bahamas, but it turned out to be a wonderful place to visit. We especially loved the people who were kind and generous. And, we learned of the rich history that connects Luperon to Christopher Columbus dating back to the late 1400's and his three stops on the island of Hispaniola. Entry into the Bahamas requires jumping through a lot of hoops. First, you have to determine a good weather window for the 30 hour journey. Then, you have to take a taxi to Puerto Plata, a small city about 1 hour from Luperon to have a PCR test. This is only offered during weekday mornings. While we were in Puerto Plata, we walked around the old town and beach front to see the famous sites like Fort San Felipe, Puerto Plata Cathedral, the Malecon, and the open food markets. It was a fascinating and successful day. The PCR test results are emailed to you the next day and then you have to apply online for a health visa, uploading the results to the site. Once they approve your results, you then have to pay a $60 fee which gives you the privilege of a nasal swab 5 days after arrival and limited insurance coverage. Then you wait until you have a final approval code. Once this is obtained, you are free to leave for the Bahamas. You have a 5 day window to arrive at an entry point. As a private vessel, we also had to apply online for our crusing and fishing permit. The cost of this is $300. This covers us for up to 6 months in the Bahamas. The online application is long, but fairly straight forward. The Bahamas requires all vessels to complete the online Click2Clear application and those who arrive without this done, will have to complete it in the customs office. The last fee is $40 for immigration and covers up to three crew members. Dopo un primo momento di instabilità dovuta all'abitudine all'utilizzo del mio Bic molto largo, ho subito preso confidenza e sono andato molto bene anche con una discreta velocità. Ho subito apprezzato la direzionalità e la scorrevolezza, il mare era calmo x cui non posso darvi impressioni con l'onda. La grande direzionalità ha come contro una difficoltà nel girare, bisogna prenderci la mano anche inclinando il kayak oppure praticamente fermandosi. Altro difetto è dato dai fori nella seduta che essendo fatti un po' in alto non fanno fuoriuscire l'acqua, x cui rassegnatevi ad avere il sedere bagnato 😁.
