EP. 78 Sailing to Antigua -REACHING AT 14 KNOTS Perfect sailing conditions to smoothly go fast at a consistent 13-14 knots is fun, and we enjoyed our return to Antigua from Barbuda. In the last Episode we showed our arrival in Antigua and downwind sail to Barbuda. We were anxious to return to Antigua to check out and proceed to St. Martin while still early in the hurricane season. We just did not know how long we would need to stay in St Martin – it turned out to be 3 weeks – before proceeding south out of hurricane zone. On our return to Antigua we stopped in Dickenson bay and enjoyed some sundowners at the floating bar that has incredible ambiance! It is a highly recommended stop for anyone sailing by, and we wish we had more time, but hurricane season was approaching. We had arranged for Lauren and Ivan were to fly back from Antigua, and we prepared to leave. Und dann sind da noch die Schwertfischfischer, die auf abenteuerlichen Booten ihre fette Beute jagen. Die Schwertfische können immerhin bis zu 500 Kilogramm wiegen.

This week on Sailing Kawai we continue our journey across the Cyclades on route to Turkey. We leave Mykonos early hoping to get some strong winds pushing us towards our final Greek Island Patmos. Unfortunately the predicted winds (12-30 knots) don't appear and we don't get in much sailing. Our only excitement is when we come across a sleepy whale and a couple of turtles. We reach Patmos on dark and anchor in Merikas Bay. The bay is secluded and like most anchorages at this time of year in the Cyclades we are the only boat. Once anchored we entered the cabin to be greeted by an egg like smell. Unfortunately our starter battery is cooked and we must rush to find a new battery out of season. With a little luck we meet a local who assists us finding a battery and we can check out of Greece. We leave Patmos with a beautiful sunrise and sail to Didim Turkey where we attempt to sign in to the country. We find a local agent who assists us check Kawai in to Turkey and we start exploring this amazing country. Some excitement arises when we get visited by the coast guard. Weekend de la Pentecôte Normalement nous devions naviguer en flottille (organiser par le port de plaisance du Havre), mais la météo n'étant pas au rendez-vous, c'est annulé😢. On décide de sortir quand même le Dimanche, direction "le cap de la Hève". On sait qu'il ne faut pas rentrer tard, car on passe en avis de coup de vent à partir de 15h. La sortie ce passe bien mais on prend un beau grain en arrivant au port . Nous affalons rapidement la grand-voile, la manille s'ouvre, la drisse remonte et vient s'entortiller sur le hauban bâbord 😱. Pas le choix il faut monter au mat!!! C'est Flo qui monte et je la hisse , elle arrive tant bien que mal à récupérer la drisse, mais dans l'euphorie, la redescend du mauvais coté de la barre de flèche . La drisse est bien descendu, mais pas du bon coté. En plus dans la manœuvre une poulie qui devait déjà être bien fatiguée a lâché. Seconde manœuvre, pour éviter de cassé une seconde poulie, Liza (10ans) monte et réussi à nous renvoyer la drisse du bon coté (dommage plus de batterie dans la caméra, elle nous fait malgré une bonne appréhension, un beau numéro d'acrobatie) mais la seconde poulie n'a pas tenu. Bilan : Encore une bonne petite navigation par vent frais . Voir les école de voile s'entrainer avec les Lazer et optimiste fait vraiment plaisir. Nous continuons à prendre en main notre voilier, Oxten nous apporte beaucoup de plaisir. Le Jeanneau Rush GTE est un super bateau. #voilierenfamille #voilierjeanneauRush #monteraumat

Dinghy disappears from the back of our boat - Sailing life Ep 110 This weeks action takes place at Airlie Beach, gateway to the Whitsundays. It's a great harbour anchorage but being a tourist town it is known for having a few unsavory characters hanging around. We were warned that dinghies do go missing from time to time, never to be seen again. So when ours disappeared from the back of the boat we expected the worst. After a fruitless search, that night for it we contacted the police, sent out alerts to the anchorage and settled down to a restless night sleep. The following morning Rob and our friend Richard set out again to find her. When we weren't worrying about the dinghy, Declan and Ivan were making friends with the local kids. Our hansom, helpful Declan had a young female friend whom he was spending a lot of time with. Unfortunately it made him quite grumpy when we asked him to do anything with us, as you will see. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and Rachel purchased Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. We needed to push ourselves and leave Clarencetown for the Exumas and specifically Georgetown, to get some mechanical help. Arriving in George Town was bittersweet. We were saying goodbye to Steve, who had been with us for more than 700 NM, but saying hello to Jeff, who was joining our journey back to the US. We also had to fulfill the requirements of the Bahamas by getting a nasal swab test on day 5 of being in the country. The process was easy and quick. We also picked up an ALIV internet puck; the cost was $140 for a month with 150GB of data available. Wow...what a great price and it works REALLY well. On our final day with Steve, we took a dinghy ride to the blue hole on Stocking Island and then took a small hike to the ocean side. Wow...what gorgeous water! The snorkeling on both sides of the island was great including the small patch of coral in front of the 5 star resort on Stocking, near Chat-n-Chill. I have never seen so many flamingo tongues on one bommie. And, on our final afternoon we also flew Jeff's drone over Stocking Island for some great aerial shots. We have had a drone for almost a year and have never flown it because that's just who we are...neither of us taking the time to learn how to do it due to the never ending list of TO DO's. We did have a mechanic look at our engine and he was fantastic. We learned that our issue is a seal leak between the engine and the transmission. We will have to fix it, but it's not urgent and a big job....we will wait until we get back to the US. This was a GREAT jumping off point for us into the Exumas and we are SO excited to see the rest of the chain. #sailing #sailboat #sailingprojects NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill.
