There's two birthdays in the family this week, Denver and Teagan are born on the same day, 4 years apart. So we decided to stop boat work for a few days and head up to Kraalbaai. Denver opted to stay back at Saldanha. Kraalbaai is in the West Coast National Park on the West Coast of South Africa. The park surrounds a large part of the lagoon. A paradise for hikers, cyclists & mountain bikers, birders and nature-lovers but what is awesome for yachties is the azure blue water and beautiful peaceful anchorage that we get to experience from a yacht. Looking at the video footage you would imagine you were somewhere in the Caribbean. The trip across the lagoon to the bay is best done on a rising tide because the channels you need to follow get extremely shallow at low tide. The tidal range of the lagoon at spring tide can be as much as 1.8m. As we enter Kraalbaai itself, in some of the channels at the shallowest point, we can have as little as 0.4m (+/-15") below our keel on a rising tide. Once through the channels, our anchoring depth is around 1.5m (+/- 5') about 100m off the shore. Whilst there, we celebrated the birthday with a brunch picnic on the beach and a good walk in the afternoon. We crossed the ridge with the intention of possibly walking across to the 16 Mile Beach. We had headed off pretty badly prepared for a long walk and when we came across a huge, very beautiful but very dangerous puff-adder snake, we decided we'd do the walk on a day when we were better prepared and with better foot gear. All in all, it was a lovely break away from the constant boat work but now we are back in Saldanha, back to sorting out the last of the jobs in preparation for our African departure - we worked it out and we have 8 weeks left to get the last jobs complete so that we can spend around 2 weeks with the passage preparation before we set sail.

Hey everyone! Here's another exciting episode detailing our 3,000 mile trip through Southeast Alaska on our 37' sailboat, Maya. In this episode, we are on Day 51 and 1300 nautical miles traveled since leaving our homeport of Anacortes, Washington. We start the episode in Sitka, AK (population 8600), where family flies in for 5 days of epic fishing fun- all from the comfort of our goodoldboat, Maya! In the second half of the video, we get down to the business of fixing Maya's compromised rigging. You'll see us go through the process of replacing our forestay, which involves dropping our pro furl roller furler. Als we in Saint Quay Portrieux liggen krijgt Felia ’s nachts een heftige pijnaanval en wordt ze met ambulance afgevoerd. Gelukkig staan we na wat onderzoekjes en medicijnen snel weer buiten. Een paar dagen later zeilen we verder naar Roscoff wat we een dagje met Lars en Naomi bezoeken. Daarna zeilen we door naar L’ Aber Wrac’h, waar we een paar dagen blijven liggen wachten tot een storm overwaait. Jarenlang heb ik ervan gedroomd om zeilend te gaan waar de wind me brengt. In 2020 was het dan eindelijk zover en heb ik samen met Felia een prachtige reis gemaakt naar Scandinavië en de Baltische staten. Onze Eva, een Atlantic 43 uit 2007, is een aluminium zeiljacht met hefkiel en gebouwd en uitgerust voor reizen naar plaatsen die net achter de horizon liggen. Vanaf 2021 vaar ik met wisselende bemanning zuidwaarts. Ik vind het leuk om onze avonturen met jullie te delen. We think this island has it all, beautiful beaches surrounded by crystal clear water, jungle, smiling happy locals and of course the very rare three toed Pygmy Sloth. There are less than 100 Pygmy Sloths left and they are all on Escudo. We feel very lucky to have seen one of these endangered animals. We had been told that we should not miss Escudo de Veraguas so we waited and waited for the right weather window to leave Bocas and make our way there. It didn’t disappoint! We were lucky enough to have the whole anchorage to ourselves. Soon after arriving we were greeted by 3 friendly locals selling us their daily catch. We don’t like to buy fish, as you never know how long it’s been dead and out in the sun for, so we opted for some live crayfish instead. We also arranged a tour of the island for the next day. When morning broke we knew we were not keen on leaving Mokara for the whole day unattended. It was rolly and squally. Not good combinations in an exposed anchorage where boat are known to drag anchor. So we postponed our tour to the next day, and instead spent our day exploring the beaches close by the boat. The next day the weather was perfect. We packed our snorkelling gear and set off following our guides in their traditional canoe. They took us through a maze of turquoise channels, dotted with islands and white sand beaches. All completely untouched! It was simply stunning! We were introduced to their family and got to see how they lived, so cut off from civilisation. The trip took most of the day, and we got to see all around the island. Afterwards we invited our new friends on board for a beer, which they really enjoyed. On leaving Escudo we caught a huge Spanish Mackerel. The wind was light so we raised the spinnaker. After sailing for a couple hours we heard a loud boom, and realised that the spinnaker had suddenly filled with wind and blown out! We were all devastated, we loved that sail and had enjoyed a few great sails with it. Sadly a new one is very much out of our cruising budget now. We wanted the sail material to go to good use. And we knew the Guna Indians in San Blas were always grateful for sail cloth to make sails for their dugout canoes. So we took our torn sail to our favourite family in Coco Banderos.
