After 9 days at sea sailing in circles, we finally reach land for repairs... https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode, the battle continues as we try to reach land for repairs. Not being able to use the engine as our prop fell apart, we have tried to sail the 200 nautical miles back to Pangkor marina in Malaysia. With countries borders closed, getting to land is only the first battle. Struggling to sail any distance n the right direction due to light winds and an opposing current, we have our tender tied to the side to try and make headway. With limited outboard fuel, we need to use this sparingly. The Iridium Go is our connection to the world and weather when we're sailing offshore. During our pre-departure preps we discovered that the lithium battery had ruptured. The company where we bought it said that is very unusual, but the really unusual part is that the Iridium Go is connected to the ship's power and fires up without a battery. However, it won't connect without the battery which seems like a really bad design flaw IMHO. Halfway the crossing and 50 miles out of the Moroccan coast we continue heading for Graciosa

The fleet developed from a competition run by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron during the late 1940s. They wanted to build a fleet of yachts that would perform well in local conditions and satisfy both the serious sailor who wanted to go racing as well as the family that wanted to go cruising. The Squadron anticipated an influx of keen sailors returning from the war, and they thought a racer-cruiser yacht would meet their needs. There were many entries into this design competition, not just from New Zealand, but from around the world. It was eventually won by Arthur Robb, a Kiwi living and working in London at the time.

Nous commençons notre 3ème semaine de navigation. La dépression est passée et nous avons pu l'éviter en en fléchissant notre route. Lots of birds on this trip. First time out there and there is a lot of aquatic vegetation. It was a challenge to make it back in time with the daylight savings. My only markers for the entrance to the dock were small sticks with old ribbons on them. Unfortunately these markers were also further south. But with the work I was able to make it back before dark.

Ik vaar op een donderdagavond 16 september 2021 in het donker door Amsterdam naar IJmuiden om de volgende dag naar Scheveningen te varen. Op de terugweg vaar ik met de spinnaker weer naar IJmuiden. Part#2 of the docutainment trilogy "The Viking Route" is leading deep into the spectacular world of the Stockholm archipelago during summer, makes a stopover in the old Viking settlement of Birka in the lake Mälaren and ends on the Åland-Islands. The movie shows, beside the travel itself, the emotions of a long time-out and spotlights – as already in part #1 – the ingenious navigational methods and the epic mythology of the Vikings. In the Danish National Archives, the description of this old sea route is kept like a treasure. By coincidence I got aware of this itinerary and curiosity kicked in. This document, written by monks in Latin script, is one of the oldest and exiting sources about navigating the Baltic sea. It mentions many places which together forming - mostly sheltered by skerries - a sea route along the east coast of Sweden, over the Åland-islands and Southern-Finland to Reval (todays Tallinn). This sailing route, already used by Vikings, the 40-year-old sailboat LA MER auctioned at eBay and a kayak are the ingredients this Baltic sea adventure through the dreamlike archipelagos of Scandinavia.
