We have finally moved aboard our wooden boat, a 1960 Ingrid Ketch, and cast off the dock lines on an open-ended adventure, sailing north to the San Juan Islands. We enjoyed this spectacular sailing ground for six weeks as a shakedown cruise for the longer bluewater voyages we have planned. The pristine waters and easy conditions of the San Juan Islands are the perfect place to gain confidence and finish preparing the boat for the open ocean. The dinghy is an Annabelle Skiff designed by Dave Gentry. I shortened it to 9 ft to fit on the cabin top. http://gentrycustomboats.com/Annabelle.html ___________________________________________________________________________ Music: Back To The Woods by Audionautix - http://audionautix.com Creative Commons license - https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... Crosbie Lorimer gives an update on the race to date, the retirements and the weather ahead (and please excuse the Pom for his reference to Tasman Island when he meant to say Tasmania!).
Black Jack’s skipper Mark Bradford explains the changes in their new mast that makes it 80kgs lighter than its predecessor and talks about the implications of differences in righting moment to how tactics are played out down the race course to Hobart.
The prospect of a rugged night’s sailing ahead, punching into a short sharp sea, with winds building over 25 knots, would not have been most sailors’ ideal start to the 2021 race to Hobart; not least after all the last minute uncertainties that the ever present COVID 19 had imposed on the fleet. The key then was to get a clean start, clear the Heads and settle in for the adventures to come. As it transpired a significant number of the crews had a few more adventures than they’d planned for, with 25 yachts having retired by shortly after 9am this morning – mostly from rig and sail damage in the short, sharp seas. That leaves a diminished fleet of 63 yachts still racing, of which 16 are two-handers. The Bow Caddy team was up in the air and out on the water on Boxing Day to capture the start from all angles and through all parts of the fleet.

We left Chora (Naxos capital) in the morning and headed south, sailing to Kalantos harbour. On a way there we did few stops for a swimming sessions. Having reached Kalantos harbour at lunch time, we dropped the anchor at a harbour and had a swim again. An hour later after arrival we moved to a local marina and had lunch. Some time during a day we enjoyed sun bathing at a local beach and we dined at a local taverna on top of the hill. An old and rusty metal boat from Ukraine is docked at the pier- that was very interesting thing to see. We spent the night in the marina..... ===================================== Track: Mark Tyner - Alpha Liner (No Copyright Music) (Audio Vault No Copyright Music) Music provided by Audio Vault No Copyright Music Track Info: Alpha Liner (No Copyright Music) Artist: Mark Tyner https://www.facebook.com/marktynermusic/ https://twitter.com/MarkTynerMusic https://soundcloud.com/marktyner https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... Yep! thats right! we're sailing around Australia, we just fully called it! BUT we gotta wait out cyclone season first... We have created a Patreon account, if you have been enjoying this production you can help support it continuing into the future here https://www.patreon.com/sailingnakama Or make a one off donation as you please if subscriptions aren't your thing. Let's keep ticking nautical miles and boat jobs off! https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=C6M8FAYZ5K2ZS We set out to leave Gloucester Passage in search for some diesel and gas, because we need both of these before we can make anymore further plans about our end destination! Upon leaving the protected Gloucester Passage we were greeted with appalling sea state and windy wind from the previous nights supercell storm that we copped. Our plan to pull up to a little beach, tender ashore and run across the road was thrown out the window as we weren't going to be able to anchor, nor get to shore safely. Completely unprepared to sail we turned Nakama back around. Our next best option was booking ourselves a night at the marina to regroup, but that means turning around and heading South, although this does not align with our most recent adoption of a no turning back policy we made an exception as we are desperate for a hot coffee. A 5 hour coffee run (sail), now thats coffee desperation. After sipping cocktails with our feet in the resort pool we ponder on what we should do for the cyclone season and with only a week of uni holidays left we decided instead of beating into Northerly winds we would take it a little bit slower and explore the islands we missed around this local area. THAT MEANS, we are staying in Airlie Beach for the cyclone season in order to SAIL AROUND AUSTRALIA, yes thats right we are determined to circumnavigate Australia! I can't believe we just said that. We have just rediscovered this nearly 20 year old video of sailing our Hirondelle Mk1 along the UK south coast with our 3 young boys. We started in Chichester and ended up in the River Fowey via Falmouth. Included a couple of overnight passages (Swanage to Dartmouth and Dartmouth to Falmouth). We had spent the previous summer repairing and refitting the boat (which was about the same age as us) while camping at the boatyard (Thorney Island Marina). Now we are refitting a 44 year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). If you would like to encourage us then you can support us on Ko-Fi! https://ko-fi.com/sustainablesailing/ Lots more detail on our blog at https://sustainablesailing.net/ Visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for hoodies, t-shirts and bags. #Hirondelle #BoatRefit #Sailing

On this leg of our adventure we explore Montague Sound, and area rich in aboriginal art. We visit many art sites in the Winyalkan Island area before moving on to the Swift Bay Area. Sadly our inflatable dinghy gets attacked and badly damaged in Art Creek overnight and takes all of our large repair kit and 3 days to repair the damage. Finally we move on to anchor behind Cape Voltaire finding a beach rich in turtle activity.

This past summer, I helped run the Necessity, a SeaRay Fly 400 motorcruiser, from the Apostle Islands to Duluth. It was a very fast, fun, and comfortable passage in calm seas — and obviously much, much faster than Vicki and I can ever do the trip on our own boat, the SV Freelance. . We had timed our passage to beat a forecasted change in the weather. The high winds (gust to 30) did arrive as promised, but we had already made our destination with an hour to spare

Nikki from Sail Tahiti walks you through the Excess 11 and shows all the storage options in the different areas. Is it enough for a round the world trip? As we get ready to sail her across to Tahiti we need to make some smart choices but overall the Excess 11 seems amazingly well designed for such a long trip! For detailed specifications and prices of the Excess 11 check our website : https://www.sailtahiti.com/en/portfolio-items/excess-11-2022/
We depart Ensenada and also the noisiest marina EVER, and begin our voyage down the rugged Baja coastline. It becomes quickly evident that the west coast of Mexico is a desolate and extremely dangerous place, yet in order for our chocolate lab, Ramie, to get to shore so she may do her business, risks must be taken.
And now for something completely different. Most of my recent videos and posts have featured my small boat sailing, in particular my Chat 18 catamaran and my dinghy racing and coaching. More videos on those to come, but I thought it was now time to post a video of my bigger boat sailing. As you will see, none of these big boats are to my design. Having said that, I always think that a good designer should sail on as many different types of boats as possible. Because that way they can see different ways of doing things and thus improve their own designs. I am also always amazed at how little sailing most designers actually do. It's akin to being a car designer but not driving one. Or a homeless house architect. The monohull is Flica 2, a 70ft Giles designed 12 metre built in 1939, so the last of the prewar 12's and before they became the America Cup boats. See here for more https://laurentgilesarchive.com/product/flica-ii/, but shown here racing in Cowes in 1960 (I recall as a child watching the 12m's fleet race so probably saw Flica racing, of course never dreaming I'd race it myself 20 years later). I sailed it for several months in the Caribbean in the late 1970s, after it had been converted to a ketch rig and was being used as a charter boat. Hard work for 2, sometimes 3, crew and up to 16 guests - especially as the engine was a converted London taxi engine with an offset, controllable pitch propeller, rather than a conventional gearbox. With a draft of nearly 10ft we were always running aground, normally hard to do in the West Indies! But we did also race it, I was then the bowman and it was "exciting" going to windward at 9 knots with the bow going underwater and no lifelines or pulpit! Next is the 54ft Great Britain 4 trimaran designed by Derek Kelsall for Chay Blyth. It won the 1978 Round Britain race. Seen here on its first sail. I sailed it for several months in 1980, mainly 2 handed with skipper Don Wood who, fortunately, is a very skilled sailor. It was challenging picking up moorings under sail with two crew and a 38ft beam! I remember doing a lot of running around on that boat and it was incredibly wet to sail to windward. But also great fun overtaking unsuspecting powerboats. When launched it was almost certainly the fastest offshore boat in the world and was extremely quick in flat water. Finally, a longer clip of me sailing on possibly the most famous west coast USA catamaran, the 63ft Profligate. Designed by Kurt Hughes for Richard Spindler, the founder and editor of Latitude 38, probably the worlds best free boating magazine. https://www.latitude38.com/ Its a huge boat and still seemed empty despite the 15? crew (maybe more!) We are seen here racing in the 80 mile Santa Barbara to King Harbor Race. Whenever I sail in S California I am always amazed by the calm, gentle swells, generally light winds and warm seas. No wonder its called the "Pacific" Ocean. Very different to the choppy, gloomy English Channel! The oil rigs were a surprise though, although the natural oil vents leaking up from the sea floor even more so. I really like these mixed events where monohulls sail against multihulls. The Swiftsure and Cowichan Bay regattas in Canada, the 3 Bridge Fiasco in San Francisco, the Yachting Monthly Triangle and Round the Island race in the UK are all races where I've finished on the podium and as a result beaten, sometimes hundreds, monohulls. Too many cruisers think that multihulls don't sail well. The monohull sailors who race against multihulls in these events know different!
We move onto our new boat and begin cleaning, organizing and fixing things. Our life gets even crazier when we haul out the boat for a quick paint job and two weeks turn into five months! Пренасяме се в новата лодка и започваме с чистене, подреждане и поправки. Обстановката се усложнява още повече, когато изкарваме лодката от водата за бързо боядисване, но две седмици ремонт се превръщат в пет месеца!
Autumn Sailing In Turkey means bonfires and cook-ups on the beach, Stand-up paddle boarding, fishing and lots of beer with friends. Showing the crew what sailing is all about! We Sail from Bodrum, Turkey and make our way south along the Turkish Coastline, stopping at anchorages along the way First stop was Black Island mineral springs and then we just had to stop back at Aquarium bay at Black Island, Bodrum on the way as well ...even though we had already been ourselves and spent several days just hanging out there, we just couldn't get enough of this place and wanted to show it off to our friends We were a little distracted with our friends on-board after being so used to being on our own, so Jason forgot to get the fishing line in before anchoring and sure enough it got wrapped all around the prop, luckily Jason managed to cut it all free Support our productions by becoming part our Patreon Crew! https://www.patreon.com/Leadingtheescapade As our subscribers would of course know, we absolutely adore animals and do show quiet a lot of them in our episodes.
