Amazing Whale Shark footage taken onboard the dive liveaboard Calico Jack in Cenderawasih Bay ,West Papua. On this particular day we had up to 7 whale sharks circling a local fishing Bagan (floating fishing platform). The whale sharks can be seen all year round in the area and are attracted by the fishing of 'ikan puri' small fish similar to a sardines, of which they are greedy. We catch up with Matt Harvey on the challenge of flying 32 hours to Tahiti, to pick up a rookie crew and prepare to deliver his new yacht ‘Salt Lines’ to Sydney, Australia to join Ocean Sailing Expeditions. Salt Lines (originally John Laing), had been parked up for 2 years in Tahiti due to COVID-19. Matt’s challenge was to fly in, prepare the vessel for departure and sail non-stop to Sydney on a journey full of the challenges that come with sailing a vessel you have just purchased and are still getting to know. Matt discuss the hurdles faced on arrival in Tahiti, the battle with the heat, the mammoth effort required to bring Salt Lines home and the upgrades and refits planned. Dan Farmer, owner and skipper of the Sydney 41 yacht ‘B52’, shares the story of his epic adventure in the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race, where more than 40% of the fleet retired due to damage or injuries. Dan explained crew selection, training, boat preparation and their strategy in the the first 36 hours of the race when more than 30 yachts retired in the tough ‘wind against current’, southerly conditions. Dan shares his thoughts on what went well, the importance of onboard leadership and an emotional crossing of the finish line. From 2 to 40 knots, this edition of this famous ocean race had everything. Find out more about podcast content and sailing opportunities: https://www.oceansailingpodcast.com

We meet up with the crew of Ohana at Two Harbors to view our very first drone launch, then take a 3 mile hike on the Island. We head back to Catalina for a late lunch (Cooking with Keeldragger) and then demonstrate how to operate a dinghy like a true professional. Happy New Year everybody and welcome to 2022- what a ride 2021 was. For this video, we originally sat down in front of the camera to chat to you guys about our last year and our plans for next year…that was until we realised how out of character that was for us..so, we took you along to Lady Falls and the incredible (and hidden) Sgwd Einion Gam. Lying just 40minutes from us in Swansea, we couldn’t have picked a better adventure to intertwine in this video- the journey was pretty rough (muddy, wet, cold, had to cross a few rivers and climb along some slippery cliff faces- just the norm ;) but boy did seeing that waterfall and getting to swim in its intense waters made it ALL worth it. I felt absolutely euphoric in that moment and it was exactly the right was to start off 2022- maybe one of the most exciting years of our life… So join us, as we chat about the good, the bad and the ugly. And tell you guys the little secret that we have been keeping! Also- I know we say this all the time, but thanks so much for your ongoing support the last few months- its been a struggle at times but your endless positivity and lovely comments make all the early starts filming, late nights editing, all worth it. So cheers! To brand new year, full of infinite adventures, travel, prospects, and hopefully less of this damn pandemic! One thing we know for sure is how to work hard, but no doubt play & travel harder. We have just spent 3 weeks working non-stop, day in and day out since we got back down to VA. However, it's time that we take a little break from all the boat upgrades and work to go on a getaway with some friends. We escape for Day of the Dead (Dias de los Muertos) festival in Oaxaca for a week of no boat work! One thing we know for sure is how to get the most of worldly experiences. Hey guys an offer i could not refuse. A few days work and a profit or i may just use her for a while to be able to nip out for a quick sail. We got it done!! We made our own spray dodger for our boat!! I’ve been having sleepless nights about sewing our own dodger and cockpit enclosure (busy tackling the enclosure at the moment), but getting the dodger done has given us a lot more confidence going forward. I watched so many “how-to” video’s that I was starting to get more confused than ever, so figured I would design and sew the dodger in a way that best made sense to me, using the basic principles found in the video’s. We are really pleased with the final result. We decided to use Ripstop / Ripblock and marine grade, UV resistant Clear Polyvinyl for the window sections. Most would ask why we didn’t just go with Sunbrella Canvas, but here in South Africa, due to our exchange rate and import charges, Sunbrella comes with a crazy price tag. The Ripblock option came in at a more palatable price, and after asking around it seems it can be used, possibly won’t have the life span of Sunbrella but for now, that is a compromise that we are willing to make. This video shows how we put it together, making allowance for 3 opening sections so we will be able to control the amount of breeze coming through the cockpit when on anchor. We started putting it together at around 9am and the bug bit, we were on such a roll that we decided to just keep going until it was done…..which was just before midnight, but it was just such a relief to know that we had done it!!! Sewing Ripblock is a bit of a nightmare. Its really thick, slippery and just a real paint to handle and work with so I cant say I’m enjoying this project as much as many of our others but its been a pleasure sailing with a “windscreen” to keep the wind at bay and we know that when the cockpit enclosure is complete, we will have another all-weather area, which will be especially awesome when we leave African shores in around a months-time because the first 4-5 days after leaving, can throw some cold, horrible weather our way. After that we will be beyond the Benguela current and into the trade winds and life will be very different.
A few years ago we ran aground taking the bottom six inches off the bottom of our rudder. This video takes you through all the steps we followed to repair the rudder to its original condition. With the right equipment this repair is easier they you might think. It is important that you use epoxy resin due to it water resistance and marine plywood or closed cell foam to build the replacement tip, once again due to it ability to prevent moisture from spreed if it the outer covering is breached. Due to the longer curing time of the epoxy resin it will take you 4 or 5 days to complete the processes as you need to allow a full day of drying after each layer of epoxy is applied, to total working time is less that half a day with each step only taking a couple of hours. Why pay a boat building to do your repairs when doing them yourself is easy than you might think. If you were inspired by the simplicity of the above repair and have your own repair to do you can pick up the resin and glass fibre matt via the product links below.
