Our fourth tips video, focused on some boatyard comparisons with a nostalgic visit to several around Chichester Harbour. We are on Ko-Fi! where you can support us for the cost of a coffee :-) https://ko-fi.com/sustainablesailing We visit Sparkes Marina, Sandy Point, Mengham Rythe Sailing Club, Wilsons Boatyard. Chichester Yacht Habour, Thornham Marina, Emsworth. Then we see how they compare in price to ABC Powermarine at Beaumaris. We see where Dave's Dad worked on: - a Caprice 19 foot https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/caprice-19 - an Eygthene 24 https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/eygthene-24 they kept several other boats over the years here Where Dave sailed his Optimist https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/optimist-dinghy-int and sailboards (joined by Jane). We also sailed the first boat we owned together which was a Hornet https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/hornet (with sliding seat). We kept our Jaguar 21 here: https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/jaguar-21 and then refitted our Hirondelle Mk1 https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/hirondelle-mki Later we also sailed our shared Laser 16 here: https://www.yachtsandyachting.com/class/Laser-16 We are refitting a 1977 Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings. We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). Now that the inside is dry (thanks to new windows, new hatches and leak chasing) we are fitting her out for live-aboard world cruising. Lots more detail on our blog at https://sustainablesailing.net/

It seems truly amazing friends only come into your life every once in awhile. This was one of those times as we are reunited with two other boats in Mayotte. In this video you will meet the “Mozambique Channel Sea Gypsies” a group of friends who would have a huge impact in our lives as we sailed along side each other, island hopping our way down the infamous Mozambique Channel. This is the first part of our journey down the Mozambique Channel and what turned out to be one of the best months of our lives! Our first stop after leaving Mayotte – MADAGASCAR!!!!! You can also follow Claire and Jo's adventure on their Youtube Channel @LodysseedeJo Real Time Update: We are currently on anchor in Mossel Bay, South Africa (Jan 4th 2021). Tomorrow we plan to set sail (on Chris’ 30th bday) to Cape Town! This will be our final leg crossing the Indian Ocean as after we pass Cape Agulhas, we will officially be in the South Atlantic! Immersing yourself in the wonders and beauty of the seas for weeks on end has never felt more comfortable than when you’re onboard the Grand Trawler 62. Designed exclusively to let you travel non-stop and uninterrupted for days on end in pure luxury, the Grand Trawler 62 is the latest evolution in yachts. A yacht that lets you voyage in style for long periods, enjoying the peace and tranquility that only ocean exploration can provide. The key to the success of this style of boat, indeed any type of long voyaging craft, is to combine autonomy with performance. And having built over 1300 Swift Trawlers, BENETEAU is firmly established at the top of the trawler market. Learn more: https://www.beneteau.com/us/grand-trawler/grand-trawler-62 -- About BENETEAU -- The first BENETEAU boats sailed from the shipyards of Croix-de-Vie over 135 years ago. Since that time, the BENETEAU brand has been synonymous with quality and innovation to all those who have taken to the water – first by the fishermen who made their livelihood from the sea and then by the legions of recreational boaters around the globe. Over the years, our commitment to innovating and embracing ideas, no matter how unconventional, has been at the forefront of who we are in order to bring you the best boat possible. BENETEAU was one of the first boatbuilders many years ago to use computer-aided design (CAD) as well as lighter, stronger composite building materials. We’ve also been at the cutting edge of using greener materials and processes to do our part in protecting the incredible world which we explore. However, all this innovation doesn’t mean we’ve turned our back on tradition. One thing we’ve discovered in over a century of boatbuilding is that new-world innovations work best with old-school craftsmanship. This combination has resulted in some of the most iconic sailboats and powerboats in the world – supremely seaworthy yachts renowned for their sense of style, luxury, and comfort along with their creative use of space and new technologies. -- Philosophy -- We’re a lot like you. We love the water in all its forms – the ocean, bays, lakes, and rivers. And we love sharing the boating lifestyle with our family and friends. This love manifests itself in every BENETEAU built in any one of our many manufacturing facilities worldwide. Every BENETEAU sailboat and powerboat on the water reflects the best efforts of the finest architects, designers, and craftsmen along with the highest quality materials and the latest innovations. When you purchase a BENETEAU, you become a valued member of our BENETEAU family. For this reason, our after-sale service is second to none as evidenced by the multitude of National Marine Manufacturers CSI Awards for Excellence in Customer Service. At the core of this outstanding service is our exceptional dealer network. Every one of our authorized BENETEAU dealers will be there for you – from choosing the right yacht to the handover and beyond. Your dealer will be your able guide when it comes to maintaining your boat properly and will help you maximize the return on your investment when it comes time to step up to another BENETEAU – and it usually does! We wouldn’t have it any other way. It's midwinter here in the UK so I thought my next video should be of a cruise up the river Tamar (the boundary between Devon and Cornwall - not the one in Tasmania!) Only joking - this was actually filmed in July, and we were on a trip up Tracey Arm, just south of Juneau, Alaska, to view the glaciers. There are several glaciers in the fjord, although most cruisers - quite sensibly, as you will see - only go to the first, small one. But we wanted to go all the way to the huge Sawyer Glacier, and thus went in a small, specially reinforced trip boat, rather than in the Downeast 38 monohull we were sailing from Alaska to Oregon. Dark blue ice originates as snow falling on the glacier and getting compressed, so air has been forced out. I understand the colour change from transparent ice is for basically the same reason that the deep ocean is also dark blue. As always a high (up to 7000ft), steep shore means deep water, and some parts are very deep. At one point we came alongside a rocky outcrop, near enough to touch it, yet I saw the echosounder still read over 900ft! Without experience you'd really struggle to make safe progress through ice. But it's quite straightforward if you do it every day. The helmsman would choose a nice, flat, smooth-sided floe and use it as a battering ram to force a way through, keeping the smooth floe jammed against the bow, thus protecting it. Eventually the floe would fall off and he'd start again. So it was a very zig zag route, in part looking for gaps in the ice and in part looking for suitable ram-floes. He needed a good clear view ahead, so excited tourists on the foredeck didn't help! Occasionally we came to gaps of clear water, presumably due to changing winds and current, but then our way would be blocked again by more ice. In the end though, we came to a stop, as the ice got just too thick to push away. The glacier wall is hundreds of feet high, so it's hard to tell how close we got, but I suspect we were further away than it seemed. Sadly since our visit global warming has seen the Tracey Arm glaciers retreat and indeed they no longer exit into the sea.
SoTA activation of Kjølaberget 434moh Norway. Easy one to walk but we needed to find the right spot with less noise. And We had a coffee in a shelter after success with QsO 📡 Zkipper the Puffindog is always with me 🐕

I continue sailing to the West at the Algarve. When leaving Culatra to the open sea Jambo is shaken vigorously, as rough sea has built up due to current against the swell. Afterwards I make it to the Rio Arade and anchor in front of Ferragudo. I also visit nice Portimão. Then it goes via Alvor to Lagos, which is my last stop at the Algarve before I sail to the Canary Islands. Another first for us was a very close encounter with a whale that crept up on us one early morning and appeared right alongside our hull. A scary moment for sure! In this first part of our crossing we experience some rough weather conditions with heavy squalls, acceleration zones and a bumpy sea state as we depart Guadeloupe and the Lesser Antilles. Make sure to buckle up and get the popcorn out for this one! To elaborate further on our little whale encounter we have put together an article with a break down of the chain of events that morning including photos, our general thoughts on whale collisions at sea and if there is anything that could have been done to prevent this. @Barefoot Doctors Sailing - Catch up with the Barefoot Doctors Sailing story 3 months after our Leopard 50 burnt to the bottom of the ocean and now we are looking for replacement boats and travelling the world in the process. This week we review the Lagoon 46 to find out why Lagoons have sold more boats than any other catamaran manufacturer in the world. We also look at the Lagoon 45 bulkhead issues that were highlighted by Colin in Sailing Parlay Revival and we get the low down from the Lagoon side as well.... Come barefoot with us as we share the exciting journey and share our adventures with you! Binge watch and come barefoot with us as we travel and explore the planet, mostly from the water but sometimes through the minds of others as we provide aid and support where needed through the amazing TUFMINDS solutions! The free TUFMINDS program is released as a smartphone program under the Exqisit Life Foundation Charity, a registered not for profit and requires financial support to fund the free program. TUFMINDS saves lives by intervening at the point of suicide and pulling everyone to higher levels of mental resilience, wellbeing and functioning. it also creates better attitudes, resilience and coping - all very important for sailors facing difficult situations at sea. @Barefoot Doctors Sailing Donations to the charity to support Suicide Prevention with the free TUFMINDS program can be made at: https://shoutforgood.com/charities/ex... What is faster than an electric winch ? We confront Ewincher and an electric winch on a 51 foot boat. We wanted to know which practice is faster to hoist the mainsail. And Ewincher is the winner. It is the best way to power all your winches. With its 3 operating modes - manual, electric, combined - Ewincher is powerful and allows speed maneuvers which can only be beaten by high sportive and trained crews. Despite its big power, the Ewincher is much easier and more comfortable to use in comparison with an electric winch. Thanks to the torque limiter and the pressure sensitive speed-button the Ewincher allows a soft start and variable speeds. You can also use both gears of the winch (electric winches usually offer just one). Ewincher is so much more than an electric winch.
After a lot of sailing and exploring the seas we finally had a hiking trip. Madeira is no doubt a beautiful island.

In episode 3 of Sailing Bye Felicia, Matt tries to start the dinghy engine, The outboard engine has been sitting for years with out being used. We are worried that the engine may never start again. Matt cleans all the fuel lines, remove spark plugs, installs new spark plugs, replaces the gasoline, uses starting fluid in the combustion chamber and gets that old Mercury outboard engine to work again. If you want to know how to make it engine start, that hasn’t started in a long time. This is a good instructional video.
Dave and Patricia close out 2021 with finale sail down to Redfish Island. Foggy night and great sail back ahead of a strong cold front. Dave and Patricia bought a new Jeanneau 440 in 2021 with no previous sailing experience. Follow them as they outfit Cavu and learn to sail.
