EP 200: Is the Tobago Cays all that? | Sailing the Caribbean Ricky & I went coconut hunting.. Ive always wanted to make natural pina coladas.. the real deal.. it's a bit of work for sure! We found some good coconuts and cut them open to get the "meat" so stay tuned for my pina colada recipe (all natural) 😉 We left Mayreau and headed to the Tobago Cays.. we wanted to see if it lives up to the hype that people make about it. It was gorgeous.. However we were dissapointed to see the lack of fish. Yes there were turtles, sting rays, lobsters etc but we have yet to find a place like ascension island. Huge pelagic fish, reef fish... it seems like these places have just been so over fished which kind of sucks cause that's what we have been looking forward to the most about the Caribbean... Our sail across the Atlantic Ocean continues. We were on the home straight, everything was going smooth and then it happened..... We spotted a single handed French sailor LOST AT SEA. Having being dismasted and stranded at sea for 3 weeks with no engine, we spotted this dismasted yacht being thrown around by the fierce swell of the Atlantic. In part 1 you saw us establish a tow with the stranded vessel and then.... SNAP the tow line broke which then became a regular occurrence. We managed to reconnect the tow every-time. After countless times of trying to summon the help of the coastguard from various Caribbean islands, each time getting a refusal of help. We knew it was up to us to get the lost sailor to safety. That was the only thought in all of our minds as we battled through 6 meter seas with 40+ knot winds. "If this was in the UK the @rnli would have been here - a sentence we would constantly say to each-other" After a sleepless night, with the help of our moral boosting egret "Rodders" we all battled against the odds to rescue this stranded sailor. It's strange to think, that even to this day, we haven't even spoke to the sailor that was lost at sea. Whoever says that catamarans are not a "seaworthy" "blue-water" sailing vessel needs to watch the video. Coco our Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 done everything we would expect from a seaworthy blue-water sailing boat. You never know maybe @WarnerBros might want to do a film on our successful nightmare. Haha! All jokes aside, we are happy everyone is safe. At the end of the day, we are all in this community together, and without each-other, where would we be? It was an epic week in NYC experiencing life anchored at Ellis Island, the July 4th Hudson River fireworks show, and the journey up the East River to the Long Island Sound. It's hard to express how much we literally enjoyed every minute of being in the Big Apple. We were really fortunate to have two beautiful evenings watching the yacht club races on the Hudson River and all around us in the anchorage. Most of the teams were highly strategic, using our boat to fend off their competitors. It was fun to watch and the blast of color with the steel gray backdrop of Manhattan was a sight I will never forget. July 4th was another day we will never forget. We arrived in NY Harbor almost a week before the fireworks HOPING that we would be allowed to stay, but never knowing if/when the Coast Guard would kick us out. Thankfully, it never happened. I couldn't believe it, but we got to spend part of the day with my childhood friend, Ruth Elise, her husband Kevin, and Ruthie's parents, Joe and Ruth, "Mr and Mrs. Torres to me", on the boat. Mr & Mrs. T are 80 years old and they are such troopers to come out to the boat in our dinghy. We love them. Plus, they are a hoot. We LOVED seeing them on Blown Away, but sadly, the swell in the river was too much for them to overcome. They all, but Kevin, suffered from motion sickness. That left a LOT of food in the fridge for me and Brown! HA! We ate for days. I was relieved to get them back to the dock on the Jersey side without injury and they were off! We returned to the boat and went to the top deck to enjoy the fireworks. It was CHILLY!!! There is nothing like seeing the NYC fireworks from Ellis Island. Magnificent! During the fireworks, we watched the Coast Guard save a boat that was taking on water just in front of us. It was crazy. They towed it to stop the inflow of water. The next day we picked up my friend Vicky and her daughter, Rocky to join us on the epic journey up the East River to the Long Island Sound. If you time it correctly, it's like a slide, if you time it incorrectly, you are in trouble. We went with the current and enjoyed 9+ knots speed over ground. To pass under 8 bridges, go past where I used to work and live, the bridges I used to walk across, was mind-blowing. I guess we never really thought we would achieve this. But, we did. After 3.5 hours, we arrived in Port Washington and had dinner with Eric and Lizzy who drove out from the city. They all visited the boat before heading back home. The line attached to the swim ladder gets caught in the propeller which bends the ladder and causes other problems. We remove the line from the prop and are able to bend the ladder back in place. Binnen durch den Kontinent - Rhone stromaufwärts Teil 2 Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. Bereits 2018 starteten wir Richtung Wien, doch ein Motorschaden in der Straße von Messina zwang uns, den Überstellungstörn abzubrechen. Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. Am vierten September kamen wir in Wien an, 980 Seemeilen und 2120 km über die europäischen Wasserstraßen lagen hinter uns. Seitdem liegt Squib in der Wiener Kuchelau, der Refit hat bereits begonnen. In dieser Folge segeln wir von Marstal in die Ankerbucht vor Ærøskøbing auf der Insel Ærø in Dänemark. Eine tolle große geschützte Ankerbucht mit wenig Ankerliegern und trotzdem gibt es immer wieder Boote, die gefährlich dicht an anderen Booten ankern. Warum nur? Habt ihr Ideen, warum das so ist? Wir haben versucht, es herauszufinden. Leider ergebnislos. Trotzdem haben wir das Ankerleben genossen. Viel Spaß beim Schauen!
