The keel timber leading edge is completed and the glass/epoxy encapsulation is started. The ballet keel bolts and top get sealed and I do a thorough work through of the engine electrical system. This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. Before we bought NV (our ex Vendée Globe race boat), we discussed the potential biggest expenses, one of which was the rudder bearing. On our boat the rudder bearing is custom made from high quality material to resist to extreme loads and it's started to leak. So we removed the rudder to check it and found that parts of the bottom bearing are corroded and that the rubber seal between the bearing and the boat is damaged. Since the bearing is custom made, the Australian company that made the bearing said they need to see the physical bearing in order to make replacement parts. So we booked a flight to Australia to bring the bearing to the company, but the bearing sleeve has been glued to the rudder shaft and we can't get it off... In the last video (https://youtu.be/Pqo1pUmDT-o), we showed the extractor that Timo made using the hydraulic jack to try to get this sleeve off the rudder shaft. But it wasn't working and parts of the extractor were breaking instead. So with only 24 hours before our flight leaves, Timo turned his attention to trying to remove the part of the bearing that's still attached to the boat. I have been thinking about buying a small sailboat for several years and I am happy to say I am the proud new owner of a 1979 Catalina 22. As a matter of fact, the day after I purchased the boat, I listened to your episode #13 all about buying a trailerable sailboat. And in the episode, Bela mentioned he had a Catalina 22 for many years. So, I feel good about my decision. Now, I must confess, I know nothing about sailing or boating. I know even less than Mike! Discussing sailboat brands and models is one topic that will get sailors all riled up, as everyone has an opinion. The sailing forums are full of statements on why a specific sailboat model is the best. Bela goes through his process for determining his requirements and then mapping those requirements onto the various sailboats models. Reducing the long list of sailboats to the ones that match how and where they will be used and taking into account the sailor’s ability and experience is also key. Shelburne is a beautiful small town in the Southwest part of NS. It has a population of less than 2,000 with a rich history. After the American Revolution, over 17,000 Loyalists to the UK left the Colonies and settled in Shelburne. This rich history is still visible in much of the architecture of the town. In this video we demonstrate how to gybe an asymmetric spinnaker. We are demonstrating on a Farrier-designed F-82R trimaran, but the process would be similar on any bowsprit-equipped sport boat, and even a heavier monohull where you're launching from the bow. You can set up an asymmetric spinnaker for an outside gybe, with the lazy sheet around the outside of the luff, where the clew flies around the outside like a windsurfer. Or you can set up for an inside gybe, with the lazy sheet between the luff and the forestay, and the clew goes through the inside much like a tack. I’ve done both many times and find inside gybes to be much more reliable in all conditions, so that’s all I ever do now on any boat. The first thing you want to do is make sure the lazy sheet is clear, and not caught under the jib or anything. Then you want to center the traveller so the boom doesn’t have as far to go. Then you ease the active sheet and simultaneously pull the lazy sheet. If you have a bowsprit, start turning the boat when the clew is around the forestay. If you don’t have a bowsprit, it helps to have a crew member run the clew back to the shrouds on the new side, and to delay turning the boat until the clew is at the shrouds. Primeira parada da nossa viagem… São Francisco do Sul - SC Velejadores itajaienses farão expedição inédita em comemoração aos 20 anos da Associação Náutica de Itajaí Projeto “ANI pelo Brasil” passará por 15 cidades e 10 estados da costa brasileira Faltam poucas semanas para mais uma aventura marítima partir de Itajaí. A Expedição ANI pelo Brasil partirá de Itajaí (SC) no dia 15 de abril e terá como destino final o arquipélago Fernando de Noronha (PE). O veleiro Gosto D’Água, embarcação utilizada no projeto, passará por 15 cidades e 10 estados da costa brasileira, e só pretende voltar às águas itajaienses após seis meses. A Expedição ANI pelo Brasil irá comemorar os 20 anos de trabalho da ONG itajaiense, que já ensinou mais de 16 mil alunos da rede pública a remar e velejar com o projeto “Navegando Pela Cidadania”. Em cada parada, os velejadores farão palestras abordando a história da ONG, a cultura náutica itajaiense, o desenvolvimento sustentável e a economia azul para o público local. “Queremos que esse projeto leve o nome da ANI e de Itajaí para outros municípios brasileiros que também desenvolvem o mundo náutico. A associação tem 20 anos de história e é um exemplo de práticas educativas e sustentáveis não só para a cidade, mas para o país inteiro.”, afirmou o ex-presidente da Associação Náutica e coordenador da Expedição ANI pelo Brasil, Claudio Copello.
