After our recent video of all the things that make our Rival 38 great for a refit it is time for the flip side. What don't we like? What is creating more work because we don't like the way it is? Fortunately, we only find one thing that we hate (after all why would you buy and refit a boat with things you hate). What we do notice is how many of the things that we don't like we have already changed, but there is one large one that we have not touched yet. Two and a half years ago, when we bought Vida, she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel, and paraffin equipment as well as all the plumbing and electrics. We have composting toilets, are installing an electric motor and all electric cooking. We are fitting a huge solar array and probably a wind generator. We have replaced all the windows, removed all the headlining and more. We are replacing all the standing rigging with Dyneema synthetic rigging. This is the biggest sustainability project of our lives as we prepare for a retirement when we want to cruise the world using zero fossil fuels on a very low budget. This Hallberg Rassy 62 with new teak decks is a high quality offshore cruising yacht designed by Germán Frers. She is well balanced, has a strong hull and has an efficient and easy to handle sail plan. And she has a well-protected center cockpit with good shelter from the hard top. Very well equipped with; an in-mast main sail, jib, genoa, as new gennaker and spinnaker, hydraulic boom vang, reefing system, hydraulic back stay adjuster and furler, hydraulic winches, winches at the mast, etc. And all this can be handled by the push buttons at the steering pedestal. Furthermore, fitted out with; a 235 hp diesel engine, bow thruster, folding prop, generator, inverter, battery chargers, and a complete B&G navigation equipment in the cockpit and at the chart table. After a slight delay in our regular scheduled episodes during our Pacific Ocean passage to French Polynesia, we are back up and running. On this episode, we say adios to the Baja and set sail across the Sea of Cortez for the mainland of Mexico for Mazatlán. It is time for us to continue our circumnavigation plans and this is the beginning of a new chapter. We set off for Pacific Mexico for our last leg of our time in Mexico bound for the South Pacific. We are joined by some friends we met in the Baja to jump across the sea. We spend our final night on the Southeast Cape and sit on the bow of the boat soaking in the last of the Baja sunsets before making way to Mazatlán. Thanks for following the adventures of WE!
