Korčula island in the Adriatic Sea. It has an area of 279 km is 46.8 km long and on average 7.8 km wide, and lies just off the Dalmatian coast. Its 15,522 inhabitants make it the second most populous Adriatic island after Krk and the most populous Croatian island not connected to the mainland by a bridge. The population are almost entirely ethnic Croats (95.74%). The island is twinned with Rothesay in Scotland. The island of Korčula belongs to the central Dalmatian archipelago, separated from the Pelješac peninsula by a narrow Strait of Pelješac, between 900 and 3,000 metres (3,000 and 9,800 feet) wide. It stretches in the east–west direction, in length of 47 kilometres (29 miles); on average, it is 8 km (5.0 miles) wide. With an area of 279 square kilometres (108 sq mi), it is the sixth largest Adriatic island. The highest peaks are Klupca, 568 metres (1,864 ft) and Kom, 510 metres (1,670 ft) high. Main settlements on the island are towns of Korčula, Vela Luka and Blato. Villages along the coast are Brna, Lumbarda, Račišće, and Prižba; Žrnovo, Pupnat, Smokvica and Čara are located inland. The island is divided into municipalities of Korčula, Smokvica, Blato and Lumbarda. The climate is Mediterranean; an average air temperature in January is 9.8 °C (49.6 °F) and in July 26.9 °C; the average annual rainfall is 1,100 mm. The island is largely covered with Mediterranean flora including extensive pine forests. The main road runs along the spine of the island connecting all settlements from Lumbarda on the eastern to Vela Luka on the western end, with the exception of Račišće, which is served by a separate road running along the northern coast. Ferries connect the city of Korčula with Orebić on the Pelješac peninsula. Another line connects Vela Luka with Split and the island of Lastovo. Fast passenger catamarans connect those two ports with Split and the islands of Hvar and Lastovo. According to legend, the island was founded by Trojan hero Aeneas or his friend Antenor. The island was first settled by Mesolithic and Neolithic peoples. There is archaeological evidence at the sites of Vela Spila and at Jakas Cave near the village of Zrnovo. The findings at Vela Spila are on display at the Center for Culture in Vela Luka. The fate of these peoples is not known but the sites do provide a window into their way of life. The second wave of human settlement was by Illyrians. It is believed that the Illyrians arrived in Balkans approximately 1000 BC. They were semi-nomadic tribal people living from agriculture. There are numerous old stone buildings and fortresses left behind by the Illyrians. Melaina Korkyra was the ancient Cnidian Greek colony founded on Korčula. Greek colonists from Corcyra formed a colony on the island in the 6th century B.C. The Greeks named it "Black Corfu" after their homeland and the dense pine-woods on the island. Greek artifacts, including carved marble tombstones can be found at the local Korčula town museum. A stone inscription found in Lumbarda and which is the oldest written stone monument in Croatia, records that Greek settlers from Issa founded another colony on the island in the 3rd century BC. The two communities lived peacefully until the Illyrian Wars (220 BC to 219 BC) with the Romans. The island became part of the Roman province of Illyricum after the Illyrian Wars. Roman migration followed and Roman citizens arrived on the island. Roman villas appeared through the territory of Korčula and there is evidence of an organised agricultural exploitation of the land. There are archaeological remains of Roman Junianum, on the island and old church foundations. In 10 AD Illyricum was split into two provinces, Pannonia and Dalmatia. Korčula became part of the ancient Roman province of Dalmatia. Hvar, a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, is best known as a summer resort. Highlights of the port town Hvar include its 13th-century walls, a hilltop fortress and a main square anchored by the Renaissance-era Hvar Cathedral. The island also features beaches such as Dubovica and inland lavender fields. Boat excursions serve the nearby Pakleni Islands, which have secluded beaches and coves. Grapčeva cave is a Neolithic and Bronze Age archaeological site. Three distinct prehistorical cultures were discovered here: Nakovan, Cetina and Hvar culture. Hvar is not only yachting and cocktail parties. The island is best known for its lavender, that turns whole swathes of land into a fragrant riot of colour in early summer. At the centre of this thriving cottage industry is the traditional village of Velo Grablje, some 10km from Hvar Town by the old road. Split is the second-largest city of Croatia, the largest city in Dalmatia and the largest city on the Croatian coast. It lies on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea and is spread over a central peninsula and its surroundings. Diocletian's Palace is an ancient palace built for the Roman emperor Diocletian at the turn of the fourth century AD.
We accidentally sail into a thunderstorm leaving Split Croatia on our way to Zadar. As the storm gets worse we decide to go off course and head for the nearest anchorage, on our way there we lightning strikes the mast of our boat frying our wind instrument. We assess the boat the next day and decide we need to order in a new wind instrument. Thankfully everything else was working fine. Some information about sailing electronics and lightening: An anemometer is an instrument that measures wind speed and wind pressure. Anemometers are important tools for meteorologists, who study weather patterns. They are also important to the work of physicists, who study the way air moves. When a sailboat gets struck, one of the paths the lightning takes is down the mast; typically, anything that happens to be close by on the way down can be destroyed: wind instruments, TV antennas, radar, lights, and so on. Fortunately, aluminum is a very good conductor and allows the strike free passage. Being hit by lightning on a yacht is, just as it is on land, a fairly unusual and improbable event. That said, it can happen and so all risks should be mitigated. The most important consideration is one of proper ‘earthing’. If you have a metal mast it’s likely that this will be hit first. Indeed, it’s usually expected that a mast will act as a shield for everything below, in a cone, on a radius 45 degrees down from the masthead. However, this assumes that the mast is properly earthed as are all other metallic parts of the vessel. It is usual for the mast and other metal to be earthed via the engine and propellor shaft. If a mast is not properly earthed a lightning strike might well cause the electrical potential difference to simply blow a hole in the deck or the hull in order to ‘run to ground’ in the surrounding water. Obviously, this is not good. If your boat is properly earthed then the most likely damage you should expect will be to electrical systems including your GPS, Chart Plotter, radios, telephones, radar, alarms and things like starter motors, etc. It’s possible that fire might be triggered by this event, so check all wiring and make a thorough check of the rig and hull structure as soon as it’s safe. If you carry a handheld GPS, sat phone and other handheld kit (like a smart phone) it’s worth protecting them from a strike. To do this either put the items in the oven (which is, effectively, a Faraday Cage). Of course, if someone decides to warm the oven for lunch this can be unfortunate! You may therefore decide to put such items in a biscuit tin - which should serve the same purpose. For this reason, if for no other, keeping an up-to-date set of paper charts on board is prudent, especially for cruisers and travellers. It’s also worth keeping a sextant on board and a reliable (and protected time piece set to UTC) but, of course, you need to know how to use it and carry the reduction tables too. Certainly, a handheld sat phone and a VHF and handheld GPS in your biscuit tin might well save you a great deal of grief! Last, prevention is better than cure. Try to avoid thunderstorms! And tropical squalls with towering clouds above them. These are areas prone to lightning strikes. Keep most crew below decks and away from danger (although the mast should protect you in theory) and it’s probably not a great idea to hang onto rigging or go for a mast climb during a thunderstorm!

Taking some first time sailors (my sister and friend) out on the Pearson 26, as expected they are now hooked on sailing. It took several practice tacks before we gelled as a crew. Since basic sailing terms and “nonofficial” terms used to simplify the teaching. On the way exiting the channel I nearly get knocked of the boat by some inconsiderate boater’s unnecessary wake. I hope you enjoy the video. Feel free to comment, like and subscribe. I’ll work on some more videos now that my torn bicep is healing…. Squalls in the Rocky Mountains are pretty common. Usually there are some signs they're coming. Squalls are often proceeded by building clouds, a visible storm on the horizon, or a period of calm as the winds reorganize. On this day, I got caught completely off guard. Boat is a 2010 Precision 18 named Mandatory Fun #squall #sailing #Precision18 #RockyMountainSailing #ColoradoSailing

Our travels took us to Scotland and Ireland this week. The Architecture in Edinburgh was unlike anything we'd seen so far in Europe. Edinburgh Castle is worth the trip to Scotland alone. Coming from America where a 100-year-old building is considered historic, it's really something being somewhere that was originally built 1000 years ago! Speaking of ancient things, the Blarney Stone is estimated by some to be 330 million years old! So I guess what's historical really is relative. We took our turns kissing the fabled stone and hope it brings us good luck and not Covid-19. We had an amazing time in Ireland. The traditional Irish music and dancing permeates through Irish culture, and we were lucky (pun intended) to get to see many Irish dances. And we learned a few as well! Plus, a sneak peak of where we're heading next before heading back to the boat. Thanks for watching!!! Song: Balynt - Harmony Music provided by Vlog No Copyright Music. As a liveaboard sailing couple with a plan to circumnavigate, we were on a quest to understand exactly what makes a performance catamaran and what the benefits are for cruisers. With the help of the internet and by talking to a naval architect and boat designer, we could better understand the math which took the mystery out of it. This made choosing our next sailboat, much easier. We recognize that performance data for sailboats can be elusive, but wanted to share our thought process and how we narrowed down the boats we were considering and landed on Outremer as a boat builder. Special thanks to Outremer for allowing us to reuse some of their video footage, but as a reminder, we are not sponsored by Outremer and are paying full price for the boat. Nouvelle Chaine en Français : @danietmarv https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChdsCViFctCvZiWUxhygMeA Being out of your comfort zone, stressful situations, sickness, sleep deprivation, or just being a parent 🙈 can considerably lower your energy levels. When it happens, it seems a lot easier to go for a quick thrill rather than make a healthy meal, but what will actually raise your energy levels is not watching Netflix and eating pizza 🍕 Of course, we all need a break from time to time 😁 the hardest thing is to watch your diet when you’re tired. Other things that work for me when I’m feeling empty is breathing exercices and mindfulness through some kind of meditation, and if..at the end nothing seems to work, coffee will always be there 😅 Hope you enjoy 😘 Dani Chapters in the episode: 00 Welcome on board 01:07: Arrival at Martinique 03:34: Yoga training 08:50: Training session 13:07: Later that week ✚BECOME A PATRON & JOIN THE TEAM: https://bit.ly/3aGBvnf (Live, Store Discounts & behind the Scenes!) ✚STORE 'NOMAD CITIZEN®' : https://bit.ly/2Pk2SeL ✚'PAYPAL ME' : https://paypal.me/nomadcitizen ✚JOIN US ON INSTAGRAM : https://bit.ly/3sam8t5 ✚THE MUSIC WE USE : https://bit.ly/37yLicK ▼ FOLLOW US ▼ DANIELA's INSTAGRAM : https://bit.ly/3ucDgjA MARVIN's INSTAGRAM : https://bit.ly/3btO44r TWITTER : https://bit.ly/2ZAsKEH FACEBOOK : https://bit.ly/3pCnRWh TIKTOK : https://bit.ly/3samhN9 WEBSITE : https://nomadcitizensailing.com ▼ PARTNER ▼ LITHIUM BATTERIES (NC21: -10%) : https://bit.ly/3aJbJ1L (Transporter Energy) SPADE® ANCHOR (NOMAD10: -10% ) : https://bit.ly/3aGjJAc SHIPCHANDLER (NOMAD10: -10%) : https://bit.ly/3sf58BO (STE Europe) #sailing #sailboat #bahamas #sailingfamily #digitalnomad
