In het tweede deel van onze oversteek van Terceira naar Nederland zie je hoe we heel vroeg in de morgen de accu van de hoofdmotor vervangen en dat deze weer gestart kan worden. Een enorm veiligheidsprobleem hebben we hiermee opgelost. We vervangen even later ook de accu van de generator door exact hetzelfde type zodat de accu's uitwisselbaar zijn. Als we het Engels Kanaal in zeilen krijgen we rustiger weer en daarmee gelegenheid om de chaos van de stormen een beetje op te lossen. Na bijna 16 dagen op zee komen we aan in Vlissingen, waar we worden welkom geheten door de sluismeester. In Middelburg gooit Lars zijn telefoon overboord en doen we werkzaamheden in de mast. Jarenlang heb ik ervan gedroomd om zeilend te gaan waar de wind me brengt. In 2020 was het dan eindelijk zover en heb ik samen met Felia een prachtige reis gemaakt naar Scandinavië en de Baltische staten. Onze Eva, een Atlantic 43 uit 2007, is een aluminium zeiljacht met hefkiel en gebouwd en uitgerust voor reizen naar plaatsen die net achter de horizon liggen. Vanaf 2021 vaar ik met wisselende bemanning zuidwaarts. Ik vind het leuk om onze avonturen met jullie te delen. We make our final push through South Carolina and head south towards Beaufort, SC. There's not a lot of wind on the ICW, but there are plenty of marshlands and the occasional pod of dolphins to see. As we hang out awaiting a bridge opening, we notice that the steering pivot on the motor broke, leaving the motor dangling from the boat by the gear shift rod. Duke tied it back in position with rope and we passed through the swing bridge into Beaufort, SC. 9 LIVES no longer has engine-steering and we no longer trust the engine as an auxiliary, so it is no longer safe to take the family out into the ocean. This sets off a wave of depression, but we still manage to make it to the Savannah River and cross into Georgia. This version of Episode 58 includes minimal edits to video and audio. This is intended to allow us to roll out more videos weekly in order to encourage greater engagement with our audience, and also to allow us to catch up to current time a bit quicker. Neil grew up sailing in the UK and quickly became accustomed to the range of weather conditions that it serves up. By the time he was a few months old, he completed his first English Channel crossing. He fell into maritime training as a teenager at his local sailing club, before emigrating to Australia and launching his own Sydney based training company 'Above and Beyond Boating'. Unlike some of the monotonous "death by powerpoint" courses that are run, Neil decided to pioneer a different approach to training through real life scenario, video based training, that people could complete remotely. When COVID came along, this went from a great idea to the "only show in town" as the traditional classroom trainers, shelved most of their courses for 2 years. Neil shares some great lessons from his decades clocking up tens of thousands of miles at sea and provides some great insights into the simple safety things we take forgranted. Ginny met Steve at a wooden boat festival in the 1990's when he was selling his book, Three Years in a 12-Foot Boat. She thought something like, “The crazy things people do!” Fast forward to 2022 and retired City Planner, Stephen Ladd (who married Ginny) shares an amazing story of the 5-years they spent exploring the coasts and inland rivers of South America in a 21-foot yacht and gave birth to a baby during their travels. They sailed from Florida to South America following coasts and islands, then they got into the big river systems down there. Using those rivers they went up and over a big hump called the Guyana Massif, which is the highland between the Orinoco and Amazon watersheds. Then they went up and over another big hump: the high ground south of the Amazon and north of Argentina. Then they crossed that second hump again, coming back northwards into the Amazon, but following different rivers this time. Steve's approach to minimalist sailing, and the challenges of getting off the grid, should inspire anyone with big adventuring dreams and a small budget. David Hows crossed the Tasman Sea for the first time in 2013, relieved to have survived a 1,500nm crossing that he never expected to repeat. 9 years and 13 Tasman Sea Crossings later, David has experienced winds as high as 55 knots, 10 metre seas, boat speeds hitting 24 knots and squalls tracked with radar moving at up to 106 knots. David shares 17 lessons that are applicable for anyone sailing offshore. David has clocked up more than 60,000 offshore miles between Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands over the past 11 years, including 25,000nm in the last 2 years alone. Your existing engine has a significant amount of spare capacity, Integrel harnesses this spare capacity to generate electrical energy to be stored for later use; all while keeping your engine running at optimum performance. o Integrel exploits the fact that there is a significant power gap between the optimum efficiency load line of an engine and the load applied by the propeller (the green and blue lines respectively in the following diagram). The generator is used as a precisely managed variable load in addition to the propellor load to operate the engine at or near optimum efficiency. The result is one engine doing two jobs: turning the propeller and generating electricity, with both tasks delivered with the best possible fuel efficiency to save fuel. o Since boat speed is locked to propeller speed, with a well governed modern engine, adding the generator load does not change the boat speed. As a practical example, at a cruising speed of 1700 rpm with a typical 60 kW engine, the propeller load is about 8 kW and the optimum engine load is about 22 kW, leaving 14 kW excess power. At this speed, the Integrel generator produces 8 kW of electrical power and applies around 11kW of mechanical load on the engine, moving the total engine load into the optimum operating area. o Integrel generates up to 18kW of energy with a dual system on a catamaran and improves the fuel efficiency of the propulsion engine up to 25%, reducing overall vessel fuel consumption. It is fully automatic, managing electrical power generation, storage, conversion and distribution in one package. o The Integrel Intelligent Controller converts raw electrical energy from your engines into usable energy at 48 volts. Energy production is closely monitored by sensors on each battery bank to keep the batteries safe. The stored electrical energy is then used to power heavy-duty 48 volt items such as bow thrusters and winches, as well as 12 volt domestic items like your fridge, instruments and house lights and 110 volt or 240 volt AC devices like air conditioning, washer, freezer etc. o The primary difference between Integrel and a Mastervolt system is sustained output. The Mastervolt alternator is a standard design high performance alternator.
