It used to be that the gold standard for strength and low stretch in sailing was this, stainless steel. Now it’s this, a synthetic fibre called Dyneema, which is not only stronger than steel, but soft, and much nicer to cuddle with. Dyneema is also much lighter, and 100 feet of this weighs only one pound, or 450 grams, so it floats. This doesn’t float. Finally, you can us Dyneema line to replace both the wires to hold up your mast, and as fasteners like this shackle, by making soft shackles. These soft shackles are very easy to make, like in this video, and very strong. This soft shackle made with 3/16” or 5mm Dyneema is strong enough to lift a car, plus you can make them in any length you need. A single strand of this 3/16 or 5mm Dyneema can hold two tons. The strength of a soft shackle really comes down to the type of knot you use. We’re going to need more than a 1.5 ton car to really put this to the test, so I enlisted the help of this six ton hydraulic press, and attached the soft shackle like this. Even with a simple overhand knot, which is the simplest kind of knot you can use in a soft shackle, we could still lift a car, that just wasn’t enough weight, so hopefully this six ton press will help us find the limits. The Dyneema is so strong that it doesn’t break, but the overhand knot is starts to slip at around 1.75 tons, still more than enough to lift a car. Most lines break before the knot, but not Dyneema. If you need more strength, use a better knot, like a Diamond knot, although those are more difficult to tie. I tried that and just wound up deforming this piece of steel in the press, but the Dyneema didn’t break. These soft shackles have all kinds of uses on sailboats, like connecting the mainsheet to the clew of the main sail, or connecting the spinnaker blocks to the boat, or even replacing a busted steel clew ring. On my boat I use Dyneema lines and soft shackles for connecting the main sail to the main sheet, as well as for the main outhaul and reef lines. I use Dyneema soft shackles for connecting the spinnaker turning blocks to the aft beam. And that’s a Dyneema soft shackle for attaching the spinnaker sheets to the spinnaker clew, and the jib sheets to the jib clew. You may think that foiling is the greatest gift to sailing in the last decade, but foiling wouldn’t be possible without materials and control lines made of Dyneema. Moreover, everybody can benefit from Dyneema lines on their boats, whereas very few boats can benefit from foiling. Overhand knot holds 75% of line strength, double figure eight holds 150%. Do not use for safety critical applications (e.g. 4x4 recovery)!!! What do you do to prepare for a 3 hour helm shift? Do you pack a bag? Grab things on the fly? Long passages require long helm shifts and it's important, especially in high seas, to be prepared. Preparation includes nourishment, safety, and having fun. I always pack a bag that I take with me which guarantees that I have everything I need. This is especially helpful when the seas are big and I am tethered in. Big seas make me want to leave the helm far less frequently so I am very happy to be able to have most things at my finger tips. Mittlerweile liegen über 2000 Seemeilen seit unserer Abreise aus der Türkei in unserem Kielwasser. Das spanische Festland rückt immer näher und damit auch die Meerenge von Gibraltar - das Tor zum Atlantik. Die Liste der Reparaturen, Instandsetzungen und Erneuerungen des Equipments wird immer länger. Unser nächstes Ziel ist Almerimar, wo wir die Liste abarbeiten wollen. Doch erst einmal segeln wir über die Balearen. Von Menorca über Mallorca nach Ibiza - und dann nach Cap d'Or, am spanischen Festland. Überwegs erleben wir den besten Segeltag, seit wir aufgebrochen sind. Und das nicht nur, weil wir zwei Mahi Mahi an Bord ziehen. Aber wo Licht ist, ist auch Schatten. Und der legt sich - wieder mal - über den Autopiloten und die Elektrik.

Binnen durch den Kontinent - Wir fahren die Donau von der Marina Maria Saal bis Schlögen und erreichen unser Heimatland. Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt.Bereits 2018 starteten wir Richtung Wien, doch ein Motorschaden in der Straße von Messina zwang uns, den Überstellungstörn abzubrechen. Segeln Ostsee. Auf geht's in unseren 6-wöchigen Segelurlaub. Aber wir kommen erstmal nicht weit, sondern nur bis vor Poel, wo wir den Anker auf 5 m im Schlamm fallen lassen. Nachdem das Gewitter und Regen durchgezogen ist, wird das Wetter noch schön. Wir genießen einen entspannten Abend und am nächsten Morgen geht es Anker auf. Viel Spaß beim Schauen! C'est une superbe navigation dans une mer tonique mais très agréable. En baie de Lampaul vous trouverez des bouées gratuite, si elles sont toutes prises vous pouvez mouiller sans problèmes après la grosse bouées de la SNSM vers l'ouest. Thierry et Christel

Voyager en voilier, c'est s'adapter. Et lorsqu'il s'agit d'aller faire ses courses, c'est toujours une découverte et une aventure. Malgré déjà 2 semaines passées à Grenade, nous n'avions pas eu l'occasion encore d'aller remplir notre frigo. C'est désormais chose faite avec une expérience d'auto-stop réussie. Nous profitons également des plages situées autour de la baie de Woburn où beaucoup de voiliers viennent s'abriter pendant la saison cyclonique. Et nous posons les pieds dans le sable de l'île privée de Calivigny, à seulement quelques centaines de mètres de notre bateau. It’s our new crew’s first sail and first overnight passage. This week on SV CUBA we have left Tunisia and are en route to Malta. There is no wind to sail but we are making the best of it and enjoy some lovely passage food. At night we have a scare with a fishing boat almost crashing into us. Fortunately, our sailboat is spared, only our nerves are a little stretched. The next day we sail into Valletta, arguably the most iconic sailing destination in the Mediterranean. Since the small Archipelago is hardly more than a day sail from Tunisia, we just had to set sail and make it there one last time. In the 18 months we spent in Malta a couple of years ago, this small island has captured our hearts. The architecture, history, culture, and people make it a must-stop for sailors, cruisers, and charter boats alike. Malta can only really be appreciated if you visit by boat. But with all the wonderful bays to anchor, Malta’s crystal-clear waters and the turquoise lagoons, you should never miss to also experience the unmatched hospitality of its people. For us, Malta will always hold a special place in our hearts. That’s why we just had to come back for a visit one more time before we continue on our sailing journey around the world.

We’re finally back in the water and getting our sails ready to put back on… but the condition of our main sail is pretty bad When we bought NV, we knew that one of the biggest expenses about owning a boat this size would be the cost of new sails, especially a main sail. Our mainsail is made of laminate cloth, which is a popular choice for race boats because the material keeps it’s shape well. However these sails don’t usually have a long life and are roughly double the price of a Dacron sail. Our mainsail is now over 10 years old and it’s kind of a miracle that it’s still with us. It’s definitely on it’s last legs but without the funds to get a new one yet, our old option is to try to pro-long it’s life.
