In a recent video we talked about the AC72s of the 34th America’s Cup, and how Oracle Team USA capsized their AC72 during a practice session in San Francisco Bay after passing through the so-called “death zone”. Today we are going to explain more about the nature of the “Death Zone”, and also show you a cockpit view of us sailing through the “Death Zone” and explain how we make it out the other side. Modern sailing boats can sail in most directions relative to the wind, except straight upwind, with the fastest point of sail being a beam reach, where the wind is perpendicular to the direction of travel. The “Death Zone” for very fast boats generally lies just below a beam reach, at around 95-105 degrees off the wind. When sailing to windward on a windward/leeward course, the helmsperson can power up the boat by steering down towards a beam reach, and depower by steering up towards head-to wind. Similarly, when sailing downwind, the helmsperson can power up the boat by steering up towards a beam reach, and depower by heading downwind. But inside the “Death Zone” the helmsperson can’t easily steer up or down to depower the boat, because they’re right between the two. So the boat can accelerate quickly and lose control if the crew don’t take appropriate action. People normally think of the “Death Zone” at the windward mark during a bear away, when the boat is turning from upwind to downwind mode, but it can also be an issue when turning from downwind to upwind as we’ll see in this video of us out racing a few weeks ago on our 27 foot, 8.2 metre F-82R trimaran. Many fast multihulls these days have anti-capsize devices which automatically ease the sails when they sense that things aren’t going as they should. These devices, and always keeping the alert and ready to ease the sails can hopefully keep us all from winding up like Oracle Team USA. To be fair to them, they were sailing in more than twice as much wind as we were, and on a much more powerful boat, so it could also be that there was nothing that could be done in that situation, other than to not be there in the first place. Lots of sailing this week, no wind, too much wind, big swell and choppy seas we have it all! We have been doing lots of hops up the east coast of Italy and pushing hard to reach some shelter at Brindisi before a storm hits! But yet again we are visited and moved by the Guardia, although they were super helpful and friendly so it wasn't too bad, we eventually find a spot we are allowed to stay in and settle down for a couple of days on the harbour wall where we explore a bit and do lots of regular boat chores like laundry and shopping! We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. It's day one of our 450 mile passage when our engine suddenly stops. We’re now over 30 miles offshore of the coast dead in the water, with very little breeze. First Bill did a quick racor swap to see if that solved the issue. Unfortunately that didn't solve the issue so we undertake a full filter change at sea. Hopefully that will solve the issue...! The passage continues and we are greeted by dolphins on the bow. The wind fills in slightly and we raise our asymmetric. Enfin la première navigation avec notre catamaran ! C’est à 5 h le matin que nous levons l’ancre, direction les San Blas, Panama !! Ces petites îles paradisiaques nous appelaient depuis un moment, alors imaginez notre joie d’enfin naviguer pour s’y rendre. Nous réalisons les différences marquantes d’un catamaran versus un monocoque parce que nous pouvons continuer à vivre pendant la navigation, ce qui n’était pas toujours possible avec notre monocoque. La mer récompense notre patience et est clémente avec nous, elle nous porte doucement sur 40 milles nautiques dans des conditions ultra favorables.
