Last Sunday saw the start of the much awaited the ocean race in Alicante. The two fleets of crewed boats had a thundering exit from the Med on their way to the first stop in Cape Verde. This is the race report at the time of editing this show on January 18th. This is your weekly sailing highlights Show, The World on Water, January 20th, 2023. In this edition, we have the so called most competitive two forms of sailing in the world. The Larry Ellison funded Russell Coutts led SailGP in Singapore and the low level but highly competitive, locally sponsored, Sydney 18 footers. SailGP is a new phenomenon. Whilst the 18 footers pedigree goes back to the early 1900s. Here is last weekend Singapore race report and later in the show you will see the greatest eighteenths race on sparkling Sydney Harbour. The RORC transatlantic race concluded with Giovanni Soldini leading the pack into the finish in Grenada in his Multi 70 Maserati. Despite major problems during the passage, he still came in first to take the title. After picking up the silverware in Newport in 1983. Aussie John Bertrand has concentrated on the Etchells. Last week he won the Australian National Championships hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club in South Australia. 11th hour sailing team's navigator, Simon Fisher before The Ocean Race start described how to get out of the Med. We tried to edit the race and we cut it to 20 minutes. Then it had to be reduced to eight to fit the show. The day was brilliant. The racing was hot. The weather was pumping north-easterly. The Polish National Foundation’s Volvo 70 I Love Poland (POL), skippered by Grzegorz Baranowski crossed the finish line outside Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina, Grenada on Tuesday 17th January 2023. Taking Monohull Line Honours in under nine days, the all-Polish team lifted the IMA Transatlantic Trophy. I Love Poland Crew: Grzegorz Baranowski, Mateusz Byrski, Arkadiusz Fedusio, Adam Glogowski, Grzegorz Gozdzik, Robert Hajduk, Dominik Janowczyk, Pacyfik Koseski, Konrad Lipski, Borys Michniewicz, Bartosz Nowicki, Filip Pietrzak, Patryk Richter, Jakub Surowiec. Nine of the I Love Poland crew are under 35 years of age and skipper Grzegorz Baranowski is the leader and oldest member of the team. A highly accomplished match racer, Baranowski became involved in the Polish National Foundation programme in the early stages. I Love Poland is successfully producing top class Polish offshore sailors. “I am very proud of the team. Last year was our first Transatlantic Race and our aim was to complete the race safely. This year, safety was still the top priority but with more experienced sailors on board, and some new youngsters, we could push harder. Visite des Jardins de la Balata et du domaine Clément - Martinique. Cette semaine, nous avons loué une voiture, nous en profitons pour visiter l'intérieur des terres. Nous avons commencé par les Jardins de la Balata situés au nord de Fort de France. Au fil de ses voyages, le paysagiste à l'origine des jardins a réuni une collection exceptionnelle de plantes. Il a créé ce lieu pour accueillir celle ci. Nous avons ensuite visité le domaine Clément. L'histoire du domaine est intimement liée à celle de son propriétaire. Un des premiers médecin de couleur à pouvoir s'offrir une telle exploitation. Il a poursuivi son parcours personnel en devenant maire de Saint François puis député de Martinique. La maison Clément, située au cœur du domaine, a reçu un nombre incroyable de personnes politiques et people. After a few days of hiding out in Gijón after our crossing of the Bay of Biscay we set sail again along the north coast of Spain, starting with Avilés. It turns out that there are no favourable winds along this coast and the waves and swell is huge! Not very comfortable sailing. Unsere erste Offshore-Etappe führt uns von Cuxhaven nach Wangerooge, wo wir in der Blauen Balje ankern und am nächsten Tag trockenfallen. Wir wollen unsere Propeller und das Unterwasserschiff noch einmal gründlich checken, bevor es auf die langen Etappen geht. Alles gestaltet sich etwas schwieriger und vor allem schlammiger als gedacht. Viel Spaß beim Anschauen! Our first small offshore passage takes us from Cuxhaven to Wangerooge, where we anchor in the Blue Balje and beach the next day. We want to thoroughly check our propellers and the bottom paint before we start the long passages. Everything turns out to be a bit more difficult and, above all, muddy than expected. This was a real treat. 2 of my fellow Lugger owners here at the club asked me to join them on a "Lugger Rallye". So, with a fair wind, we galivant off for a quick sail together in convoy. I haven't had so much fun sailing like this for a long time and it was great to be joined by some other sailors. For some reason my boat just seemed quicker. We caught up with some friends in Gulfport, then sailed to Clearwater Florida and hung out for a couple of days. We had to finally say goodbye to Al. It was time for him to get back to his life in Kemah. It was a difficult goodbye. He helped us so much and he'll always be on of our very best friends.

► We announced back in May last year that Fontaine Pajot and Guy Couach had signed a production partnership for the MY4.S, MY5 and M6. The catamaran builder's objective is obviously to increase its production capacity, and Guy Couach's waterfront site was an excellent opportunity. In September, one of the Couach buildings at their base in Gujan-Mestras in southwest France was completely emptied so it could accommodate the molds and tooling required for the production line. Just two months later and the site was operational, but it had involved long transports of equipment by barge from La Rochelle to the Bay of Arcachon. The first MY built on the new site is a 6, and was launched in Gujan, then moved to Arcachon for final preparations before being delivered to La Rochelle. A second powercat, an MY5, is already out of the sheds. Eventually, 40 to 60 power catamarans from Fountaine Pajot’s MY range will be built at the new facility each year. It isn't just construction that makes a boat seaworthy... a well-built boat can beat you up if the ergonomics and livability are not right. Learn what to look for before you buy that pretty boat.

Things break and you find yourself without an electronic system. Do you have your parallel rulers, dividers and compass with you? Do you have back up paper charts? These $100 items could save your life.

Beware of the "Uncle Harry" syndrome. He's in every boat yard and sheds unsolicited misinformation that will shake your confidence in whatever job you are working on. Turn on that very loud drill and just nod your head.

Damp-proofing your fiberglass boat with free flowing air is the key to a drier boat. Learn what you can do to your boat now to prevent dampness or what things to look for when you are buying a used boat that has signs of mildew and just plain stinks. It isn't the end of the world.
